General Physician,
Honey excellent for Cough

A spoonful of honey can quieten children?s? night time cough and help them and their parents sleep better.

When compared to the cough syrup ingredient dextromethorphan or no treatment, honey came out on top. According to a study from Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the results are so strong that it can be said that honey is better than no treatment and dextromethorphan was not in children with upper respiratory infections (URIs). There is currently no proven effective treatment for cough due to an URI like the common cold. While dextromethorphan is widely used, there is no evidence that it works, and it carries risks.

Honey is used around the world as a home remedy for cough, and might provide a safe, effective alternative to cough medicine.

To investigate its role, the researchers compared buckwheat honey, a honey?flavoured dextromethorphan preparation, and no treatment in 105 children who had sought treatment for night time coughs due to colds. Among the three groups, children given honey had the greatest reduction in cough frequency and severity, and the most improved sleep, as did their parents. Its sweet, syrupy quality may be soothing to the throat, while its high antioxidant content could also be a factor. Honey also has antimicrobial effects.

Honey is not recommended for infants younger below one year of age because of the risk of botulism spores.

Hi my baby was diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux with suspected uti. And was put on antibiotics till date. She was 2 months old at diag. Now she is normal. Should we need to continue the med. Dose 1.5ml septron.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Ranchi
The infants are prone to develop recurrent uti and also infection of kidney. This is the reason they need to be put on prophylactic (low dose antibiotic) for long duration. The ultrosonography should also be done to see any damage to the kidney in babies below 2 years of age if there is history of uti. I would like to know whether usg has been done or not. Regards.

There are many changes in habits occur at this adolescent age due to hormonal changes which some time disturbs one's earlier living. Proper Counselling is necessary by pediatrician or psychiatrist. Right now don't make him conscious and intelligently try not to leave him alone as far as possible.

My 15 months old baby girl refuses all time to eat her meal. I am depressed for her intake. I just need an advice how to make her eat and see her healthy.

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
Usually children eat appreciate to their requirements but not up to the expectations of parents. If weight is appropriate for age, nothing needs to be done. In that case, stop worrying and start enjoying meals with children. They will learn how to eat by imitating you. You eat, whatever you feel your daughter should eat, with her.

This habit will automatically be resolved. One thing to watch for is to observe exactly in what circumstances or situation he keeps it out. If nothing like that, no worries.

Is painless vaccines safe for a child? please tell.

MD
Pediatrician,
1. There is nothing like painless vaccine. 2. Every vaccine is associated with some pain 3. Whatever there is available in market for human use is made available only after it has gone through three phases of trials (animal + human voulenteers) the forth phase of trial is post sale survays. 4. Please get your child vaccinated immeditely. 5. A little pain will go in few minutes or a day but if the child got the disease it would be more painful for the child and for the family.

Since wt of baby is 5 kg which is absolutely normal for this age, you need not worry and she does not require any medicine. So called vomiting is not vomiting it is regurgitation which is due to mild over feeding and/ or swallowing of air during feed.
