Diarrhea - How to Treat it in Children?

Diarrhea - How to Treat it in Children?

Diarrhea occurs when the body is expelling germs out of it. An episode of diarrhea can last anywhere from a couple of days to a week. Dehydration, cramps, vomiting, nausea and fever often accompany diarrhea. Usually, children tend to get diarrhoea more than adults.

Diarrhea treatment according to causes behind it

  1. Treating diarrhea due to infection: Some common causes of diarrhea include infection from rotavirus, salmonella (a type of bacteria) and rarely giardia (a type of parasite). In children, virus is a common cause of diarrhea. Besides watery or loose stools, viral gastroenteritis infection symptoms include fever, headache, stomach ache and vomiting. Gastroenteritis diarrhoea can last for 5-14 days. During this time, fluid loss must be prevented. In younger children, oral rehydration solution (ORS) or breast milk is enough. Just feeding them water won’t replenish the potassium, sodium and other nutrients they lose. Older children, to prevent fluid loss, can be given ORS and popsicles to counter dehydration and vomiting.
  2. Treating diarrhea due to medications: Antibiotics or laxatives can cause diarrhea in children. If the diarrhea is mild, make sure your child is hydrated. If the antibiotics are causing diarrhoea, you need to continue medication, but do consult a doctor immediately.
  3. Treating diarrhea due to food poisoning: When it comes to food poisoning induced diarrhea, the same method as countering infection-induced diarrhea should be followed. Keep your child hydrated and call your doctor.

Diarrhea and children - recognising dehydration

The most serious complication of diarrhea is dehydration, especially if the diarrhea is severe. Severe dehydration is critical as it can cause brain damage, seizure, even death. Your child may need immediate medical attention, if you notice the following symptoms:

  1. Light-headedness and dizziness
  2. Sticky, dark mouth
  3. Dark yellow urine
  4. No or few tears when crying
  5. Dry, cool skin
  6. Loss of energy

When should you visit a doctor

Diarrhea resolves within a few days, but it can have serious complications. Call your doctor if you notice signs such as:
1. Looks very sick
2. Diarrhea has persisted for more than 3 days
3. Your child is less than 6 months old
4. Your child is vomiting bloody yellow or green fluid
5. Seems dehydrated
6. The fever reads above 105 degree Fahrenheit
7. Bloody stools
8. Rashes
9. Stomach pain persists for more than 2 hours
10. Infrequent urination

Dentist, Gurgaon
Hi, your son seems to b. E having a tongue tie. That makes moving tongue upward and outward difficult. This can be corrected with a minor tongue tie surgery. Get him to your dentist and get a complete checkup done. Tongue tie surgery can help him to freely move his tongue.

Adenoid, Tonsil, Quinsy, Tonsillitis and Homoeopathic Approach

Adenoid, Tonsil, Quinsy, Tonsillitis and Homoeopathic Approach
For kids growing up, enlarged tonsils can be a big problem. An enlarged tonsil and recurring infections pose various health risks for kids. A tonsil infection can lead to various other infections and diseases in the upper respiratory tract and even affect their physical growth.

A part of the lymphatic system, tonsils work hand in hand with the body’s immune system. Some reasons for enlarged tonsils are as follows:

Strep throat
Common cold (viral)

Enlarged tonsils can cause various health problems if left untreated. Often, tonsil infections can result in vomiting symptoms—something not quite treatable using traditional and allopathic medicinal practices which often look to surgery to remove the tonsil and provide relief.

Homeopathy is gaining popularity in treating kids with enlarged or infected tonsils. The homeopathic approach acknowledges the tonsil as an integral part of the body’s immune system and thus discourages surgical treatments of tonsil related problems. Homeopathic medicines are safe and can be used for prolonged periods without any side effects.

The homeopathic approach to enlarged tonsils works in the following way:

They bring down the size of the tonsil back to normal thus converting the tonsil from its unhealthy enlarged state to its normal, healthy one.
They enhance the immunity and resistance to allergic reactions/attacks from exposure to allergens.
They reduce the occurrence and frequency of common cold and influenza.

Cases have been recorded when traditional and allopathic approaches to tonsil infection failed and the patient was saved due to homeopathic treatment.

My 1.8 years old son not eating anything. Only depends on milk. How to feed solids to him.

General Physician,
It's easy, start feeding him solids mixed with milk. Then decrease milk content keeping it semisolid. And he'll grow himself into eating solids. Wish you luck! Do revert if you need any further support.

My son is 2 yrs old & frequently suffers from cough, cold & fever. What care should I take? how do I improve his immunity? he generally eats dal-rice, roti, fruits, snax, chocolates & lots of water. What changes are required in his diet?

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
This is usual in first 5 years of life. Treat whenever he gets cough. If it is too frequent, like every fortnight then perhaps he will need bronchodialator.

When we bathing to babies if they are swallowing the water will the baby suffer from cold is it true and also tell us which medicines used for wet cough and cold for 3 months baby.

MD Pediatrics
Pediatrician, Vadodara
No it's okay for some water to go through mouth. Dry the baby as soon as bathing is over which will prevent catching cold. Simple nasal saline drops will do for nasal blockage due to simple cold. If it increases consult your pediatrician.

Giving regular food a twist

Mommas dilemma. How to keep the food healthy and interesting for their children. Kids throw a fit when they are served something they dislike.

You could always have an alternative for'unhealthy' food, and create a healthier and nutrition-rich meal.

Try turning the boring roti and sabzi into a vegetable wrap with loads of salad leaves, tomatoes and onions for the crunchiness.

Cheese and butter are a child's weaknesses. So, how do we make it healthy? for children, any dish with a top-up of cheese is too good to resist. But, you could use paneer instead or if they just can't do without it, try the cheese made from cow's milk.

It's all about giving the regular food a twist, making it look interesting and giving your old recipes a new look. Just a few changes here and there, and you have a healthy version of fast food. So gear up all moms create something healthy n interesting.

Moms are the best cooks after all!

My son is 6 year old, a continuously bed wetting (one or two) by day one. What is the reason, how it goes away.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), DNB (Pediatrics), MNAMS (Membership of the National Academy), MRCPCH, Certificate in GI Endoscopy
Pediatrician, Delhi
Most of the times bed wetting is inorganic. The approach in this case will be to look for organic causes which are those that needs treatment with medication or surgery. These are usually not needed. If the condition is inorganic, behaviour therapy could be instituted.

My child born on 2 april 2015 vomits milk I breast feed her nor does she burps easily please help as i am worried.

Pediatrician, Mumbai
Check correct position while feeding. Head of babybaby should be kept higher than rest of body. If still the vomiting is there after each feed child needs to be started onon antiemetic and antifeflux medicine and also rule out gastroesophageal reflux.
