Hi. I have 28 days old baby boy. I am given only brest feeding to him. But from last 2 days my baby is continuously crying due to insufficient brest feeding. I thought to give lactogen formula milk. Is it fine foe baby.

MBBS, MD
Pediatrician, Gurgaon
No, avoid bottle and formula feeds. I personally believe mothers of such small child should feed for ten times a day. Child sucks for few minutes and then stops.

Sugary foods should be consumed in limited quantities as the bacteria in dental plaque changes them into acids.

The number of antigens covered are more in the expensive one. Hence it is more effective than the cheaper version.

Hello Ms. Lybrate-user. Sounds like you are having a viral fever. Please take some steam inhalation and gargle with salt water. You can only take paracetamol. Do not take any other meds as they may be secreted in the breast milk. Please check for any other symptoms like sore breasts, burning in urine, etc. Consult a physician before taking antibiotics. Hope this helps.

My Son is of 4 years age, during the summer and the onset of the monsoon season he starts to have these mid size red bumps on his legs and hands, which are very itchy and once after non stop scratching the skin getting bruised and the itchiness subsides. Can you please help out on this issue.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Tumkur
It looks like a contact dermatitis which gets exaggerated after exposure to a particular allergen. You must find out and avoid it. That is the best solution.

If it's thalassemia minor treatment is rarely needed. If it's thalassemia major needs regular blood transfusions.

I am female 27 years old. Have a baby 20 days old. My nipples are very small. When I feed my baby milk does not comes out in normal flow, and it becomes red and sour after every time I feed my baby. Please advise.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Tumkur
I think you have inverted nipples. You should pull them out gently 20 to 30 times in the morning and evening. You can also try syringing which is taught by a pediatrician. For sore nipples apply your milk only which comes at the end of feeding.

Mera baby 1 month ka he. Use kabhi kabhi ulti hoti he. Me ye puchna chahti hu ke use ulti hone ke kitne time ke bad me use feeding karva sakti hu?

Shayad jise aap ulti samajh rahee hain wah doodh nkalanaa hota hai jo dodh ke baad pet bharane par kabhee kabhee bachchaa kar deta hai. yah samanya hai. doodh pilane ke baad dakaar dilaa de. Ulti/ doodh nikalane ke baad bhukh lagane ke samay par feed karva sakatee ho.

Our baby is of 1 month 20 old, we have taken all the vaccines prescribed for 45days except PCV because it is costlier. Is pcv vaccine for the infants is compulsory?

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Ghaziabad
Every vaccine is compulsory if it is providing protection to your child. This vaccine prevents child from 3 dreadful diseases like pneumonia; meningitis; otitis media and sepsis. If affortability is not the criteria you go for this vaccination either of the 2 vaccinations as my colleague has mentioned.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi, for kids, always maintain a balanced, healthy and nutritious diet by giving seasonal fruits, salads, good amount of water, milk and milk products, legumes, cerelas, nuts (almonds, cashewnuts, pistachios, peanuts) and encourage him in for participating in physical activities which is a kind of exercise for kids. All these would help in increasing his immunity, maintaining good health. Give him homoeopathic medicine - alfalfa tonic twice a day for 3 months.

Ent specialist or pediatrician, both r equally competent to treat. U may consult any one. If any intervention is required, ent specialist can do it. For passing stool problem, give her fibrous food good quantity of water. Gud (गुड़) in stead of refined sugar may be helpful. Train her for toileting habit.

Don't be worrried about your baby's eating habits. If he is wetting the diaper 6-8 times and making bowel movements 2-5 times a day, it means he is getting enough to eat.

Hello Doctor, My son is about to 3 years but he is not talkative he just says mummy and Papa and some a few words. He understands everything and very clearly explains his points. I am worried why he is not speaking he is going to playway from March 2016.

Diploma in Paediatrics, MD - Paediatrics

I understand your apprehension for delayed speach. In some cases it will take around 4 yrs. Have a patience and try to speak with him and give him reassurance. As he will in school he will get ample opportunities to express himself.

Now he is 2 years old by 25 Sep 2016. NOW WHEN HE FELL DOWN AND GOT HURT TO HIS MOUTH AND HEAD HE CRY A LOT AND GOES FOR (FREEZE) FOR SOME OF 2-3 sec. Is that sign of SEIZURE OR UNCONSCIOUS. He did it 3 times from last 20 days. Pls help me m very tense.

Probably he is suffering from breath holding condition. If it is breath holding, it may go on its own after some time and earlier if you do not pay attention to it. But it is better to consult pediatrician to ascertain real ailment as he suffered from seizure in infancy.

Say Goodbye to Yellow Teeth

Yellow teeth ruining your smile? see what's the solution it's not always whitening!

January is around the corner and along comes a new year with its numerous resolutions and promises on improving ourselves. Be it the latest diet or the promise to workout we all want to look and feel our best. If your dental resolution is to stop living with a yellow smile then here's a combination of home remedies and dental treatment tips to make you smile bright and white this new year.

Depending on the existing colour of your teeth and how bright you want your teeth to be, we have here some options ranging from the mildest to the most impactful colour change.

#1. Light yellow teeth: clean better!

Plaque and other food deposits can make your teeth look unclean and discolored. Most often the original white of your teeth can be restored by a simple clean up procedure that washes away all the discolored food particles.

#2. Yellow to brown teeth: eat better!

An indian diet with turmeric coupled with our addiction to anything from tea, green tea, coffee, red wine to even smoking can lead to excessive staining of our teeth. While it may seem impossible to avoid what we are habituated to it's equally necessary to compensate by frequent cleaning and whitening procedures based on your frequency and level of exposure to these staining substances.

#3. Natural white: naturally

Home remedies which have no side effects like a pinch of baking soda mixed with crushed strawberries or 3-4 drops of lemon are often used to whiten teeth by scrubbing away the stained particles. Malic and citric acid present in strawberries and lime respectively gives an instant whitening effect without harming the natural layers of the teeth.

#4. Frequent yellowing: brighten at home

If you're looking for more than just a natural clean white colour but want it done with as little chemical exposure as possible then home bleach is the best option for you. Removable, transparent, custom made plastic moulds of your teeth can be made in just one session. You can then put in a few drops of a low concentration gel bleach into these as they snugly fit onto your teeth. Keep them in the mouth for 45 minutes daily for up to 7 days. This procedure is done as directed by a registered dentist. This gives you a bright white colour with minimal or no side effects and the additional benefit is that it can be repeated just before an occasion or every time you feel there is yellowing of teeth.

#5. Brilliant white: in under an hour!

If you want nothing less than super bright then a very standard and recognized procedure is that of the office bleach done in the dental chair in under 45 minutes. Here we use a more concentrated bleach to get you noticeable and long lasting results. Done in cycles every 10-15 minutes to show you the colour improvement and prevent side effects and discomfort. Certain precautions must be observed for 7 days after the bleach and it is recommended once annually to maintain the colour.

A word of caution for the over the counter products that claim to work brilliantly to whiten teeth but overuse or unsupervised use of the same may lead to irreversible tooth damage.

Even with this array of information and multitude of options available for your convenience- a consultation with your dentist for your perfect white smile, will work best before you decide to take matters into your own hands.

You could have yellow teeth due to one of the following reasons:

Genetically yellowed or dull when formed.
Age-related reduction or thinning of enamel and exposure of dentin.
    Excessively stained diet or habits.
Appear yellow due to fairer gums, lips, complexion or lighter eye colour.
Dental diseases which stain or eat away your enamel.
    Improper oral hygiene habits.

Do let us know what you think. We would love to hear from you!
