•If your cavity in the tooth is caused by decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. •If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection.

Usually ulcer heals by itself only within 1 week. You can take 'Becosule capsule' once in a day for 1 week for faster recovery. Temporarily you can apply mucopain gel over ulcer for relief..

Hello, I have some cavity in my teeth. So I need help. I am really surfing from a bad pain of this cavity. So please help me how I can make my teeth, cavity free. I already tried many paste for this, buy they did not worked. Thanks.

PERIODONTIST, B.D.S.
Dentist, Navi Mumbai
Hi lybrate-user if you have bad pain then first take analgesics. Then take a appointment from dentist for filling of cavities. The tooth causing bad pain will definitely go for root canal treatment. Tooth pastes are preventive measures means it will prevent cavity formation but it won't help you in cavities which are already present in teeth. After your treatment, you can use any fluoride containing tooth paste it will help you in further prevention of cavities.

Sir I hav bad smell in my mouth pls frm last few years so any suggestion s frm your side.
Hi, Mr. Lybrate-user genrally bad smell arises due to one to many reasons, reasons can be like food lodgement between teeth in any region mostly in molar regions its frequent problem or decayed tooth i. E a cavity in the tooth or bledding gums or due to inadequate drinking of water or smoking etc if you do not have the above said problems then sometimes gastric problems or underlying medical issues can be a reason for bad smell. As for avoiding bad smell you need to brush twice and do garling with plain water after every meal. And regular professional dental cleaning.

Your history is typical to Aphthous ulcers unless associated with fever or rashes on the other body parts. So you can avoid taking hot and spicy food stuffs. Keep your oral hygiene at best by visiting a dentist and get a professional cleaning done. At home, you can use Amlexanox gel, apply directly over the ulcers 3-4 times a day until ulcers heal. Take zinc and vitamin b - complex capsules daily. Drink as much water as you can and relax. Do not stress yourself on them or else it will take more time to heal. If you have never faced these type of mouth ulcers before (Aphthous ulcers) ,it will be healed in 7 to 10 days. Chances are it will reappear in future but that is how these ulcers get its name (recurrent aphthous ulcers ). Hope you will soon get the relief. THANK YOU.

You should be seeing your dentist a minimum of two times a year. This is important to check the health of your gum tissue and regular x-rays to catch active decay while it?s small.

For the past 3 days I have had eye pain at the back of both my eyes. It also hurts when I move my eyes. It is in both my eyes but it appears to alternate. I also feel as though my eye muscles are very stiff and sore and limits my eye movement. I also feel as though my vision is zoning out, blurring my vision and making it difficult to focus. I feel as though I am constantly fighting to keep my eyes focused. Furthermore I have a heavy pressure feeling behind and around my eyes and in my head. It also feels around my nose. I have heavy brow ache and also tension type headache. In general my face, eyes and head feels tense and sore. I am also getting intermittent ear ache, my temples are tender, my cheek also feels slightly numb and I feel like I have toothache slightly. I do not have any nose congestion or cold symptoms so just wondering what this can be?

We need more investigations (full mouth x-ray) to decide upon treatment. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

If cavity is not hurting you, then filling of cavity the may help you. If cavity is hurting you, then root canal treatment and crown/ laminate will be the best treatment.

These are to different problem but can be correlated, as due to malocclusion there can be a tmj clicking sound which is there due to either deep bite or any other cause. As a solution I would ask you to soon start your orthodontist visit for ortho treatment. For the tmj start with the 5 steps protocol - 1. Less mouth opening 2. Soft diet 3. Exercise 4. Moist heat at the joint 5. Medicine a) tab glucosamine once in a day b) painkiller if required.

Causes and Symptoms of Dental Abscess

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Causes and Symptoms of Dental Abscess

Dental abscess is characterized by pus formation in the teeth or the gums. This infection may occur either in the gums or the tip of the tooth. It usually occurs due to a bacterial infection which may enter the mouth through food, thus causing accumulation of plaque. If the plaque is not removed by following proper dental hygiene, then it may result in abscess.

The various factors that increase your chances of getting affected by dental abscess are a sugar rich diet and poor oral hygiene. You should brush your teeth to prevent symptoms of dental abscess. A diet that has too much sugar may lead to cavities that increases your risk of dental abscess.

Dental abscess may be classified into three types

  1. Periodontal abscess: This type of abscess occurs in the bone structures in the teeth
  2. Gingival abscess: This type of abscess occurs in the gums
  3. Periapical abscess: Periapical abscess occurs in the soft areas of the tooth

Causes:
Entry of bacteria through holes in the teeth may result in breaking down of the soft tissue under the enamel. The infection may result in the hole to penetrate the pulp in the teeth. The bacteria thus infects the bone present in the teeth causing Periapical abscess. The bacteria that infects as a result of plaque accumulation may lead dental abscess. This may also lead to formation of gaps in the teeth leading to infection in the inner areas of the teeth.

Symptoms
The symptoms of dental abscess are:

  1. The teeth may become sensitive to hot and cold temperatures
  2. Pain during chewing food
  3. A persistent pain in the jaw that radiates to the ear
  4. You may experience a swelling in the face and the neck
  5. Tenderness in the lymph nodes in the neck
  6. You may experience symptoms of fever
  7. Presence of foul smelling fluid in your mouth

Braces: Understanding Your Options

BDS
Dentist,
Braces: Understanding Your Options

A generation ago, we would not see so many adolescents with braces as we do currently. Orthodontics, the branch of dentistry involved in the use of braces to align and move teeth to form that perfect arch, has seen rapid advancements in the past few decades and continues to grow at a rapid pace.
The fundamental principle is that the teeth is held in place by surrounding elastic tissues, and minor constant forces can be applied to align them better. Small metal brackets are applied on the teeth and a wire is passed through them so that there is a constant force on the teeth. The amount and direction of force is managed by the doctor. The younger the age, the more elastic the tissue is, the easier it is to move teeth.

There are two main things to understand in terms of your options, relation of age with orthodontic treatment and the choices of braces.

Firstly, correlation with age. Over the years, more people in their 20s and early 30s are choosing to have braces. Though the teeth and more importantly the surrounding periodontium become less elastic with age, the amount of force exerted is increased and therefore tooth movement is enabled. Also, in older patients, tooth removal may be required more frequently to make space for proper alignment.

Secondly, the choices of the braces:

  1. In the earlier days, bands were placed around the teeth and a wire was then connecting all these bands to enable tooth movement. Gradually, this made way to small brackets being placed on the front surface of the teeth, and a wire running through it and elastic bands connecting the bracket and the wire. This is the most effective way of moving teeth, though not esthetic. To make it look different, the ligatures could be colored.
  2. For people who are constantly in the public eye, the metal braces were a deterrent and so lingual braces became popular. The brackets are applied on the inner surface of the teeth and are not seen easily. The amount of force here varies from the earlier one, and not all conditions can be treated by this method.
  3. The next development was the development of ceramic braces, which are also applied to the front surface of the teeth and can be used in most cases. These are more expensive than the metallic braces.
  4. Removable aligners is another option, which are trays which need to be worn for close to 18 hours a day to induce tooth movement. This is esthetic and no metal shows during talking or smiling.

So, if you want to improve your smile, visit your dentist and find out how!
