There always remains a higher risk to develop kidney damage. You must take precautions to not expose the kidney to excess of salt, tobacco & alcohol consumption, harmful over the counter drugs like pain killers & antibiotics. Keep your bp, weight under control. Exercise regularly

Hello doctors, warm welcome. Actually I have a problem of frequent urination, almost more than 6 times a day. It makes me feel too inconvenient and I drink water more, but if I drink a glass of water, I used to urinate within 45 mins and it takes usually average of 30 mins after meal and aftr drinking water. I do not know whether its normal or abnormal. Please help me. Thanks in advance :)

General Physician, Bangalore
Frequent urination can be due to drinking lots of water. It can also be due to cold weather. Or both the factors can act together. Sometimes, in people who are overweight, they tend to urinate frequently. There can always be infection, diabetes kind of problems. But you are too young to have those. If worried get urine analysis test done.

Dear lybrate-user. If this problem is troubling you too frequently than the permanent treatment is a small surgery ie lateral sphincterotomy which will decrease the anal tone. It will stop the recurrence as the main cause of recurrence is increased anal tone and constipation. You can contact me if you have more queries.

I am 18 years old and I don't know why am I getting itching on my anus and also getting allergy.

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS - Urology, MBBS

Dear , you may have threadworm infestation where itcing at anus is associated withallergic reaction around anus. So get stool examination done. If possitive then tratment is simple. This infestation self perpetuates through anus to mouth route so be careful to wash hands thoroughly after toilet and also after every scratch at anus. Dr. Kiran mehta.

Recently I got to know in an ultrasound test that I am having a gallstone and a kidney stone. But there is mild discomfort in the right side of my back. Kidney stone is 4 mm and gall stone is 9 mm. Is this size a reason to worry and how soon should it be operated? Meanwhile what precautions are to be taken?

Mbbs, MD - General Medicine, DM - Nephrology
Nephrologist, Ahmedabad
4 mm kidney stone probably come out without any operation. U need to take 3 to 4 lit fluid intake and low salt diet. For fall stone it's needs gall bladder removal if it's causing pain.

How to analyse ultra sound (USG Abdomen) test? What is meant by prostate of 21.1 ML with insignificant residual urine of 20.4 ML. Two freely moving calculi are seen in GB.- Cholelithiasis?

MS- General Surgery
General Surgeon, Nagpur
It will be very difficult for you to analyse a use abdomen report. Prostate 21.1 ml means the volume of the prostate size. It is a bit enlarged but nothing to worry about as your residual volume is post urination is only 20.4 ml. As far as the calculi in gall bladder, the size is not mentioned. But it can cause problem. Should get it operated of it is causing pain.

I'm 28 yrs old man. My bilirubin is normal, lft test result is normal. I drink about 4 lt water daily. Sometimes at morning, daytime or night my urine color is yellow since last 6 mnths. Digestive or gas problem is frequently happened. I dont drink any alcohol or dont smoke. Why is urine yellow, any problem?

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS - Urology, MBBS
Urologist, Ahmedabad
Dear , 1. Occasionally urine is yellow because at that time your body does not have any extra fluid to throw out so at that time your kidney is passing all waste products in as little waiter as possible resulting in concentrated urine which would be yellow. It is not a problem and do not worry about that just drink as bit more. 2. Your gastric problem may be due to acid dyspepsia. Try ranitidine 150 mg twice a day 1 hour before meals or 10-20 days and avoid spicy, sour and fermented food.

Laser Treatment For Treating Renal Stones!

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, MCh - Urology

Laser Treatment For Treating Renal Stones!

Kidney or renal stones refer to the hard mineral deposit that accumulates along the path from the renal pelvis to the bladder. In normal conditions, toxins are filtered by kidneys from the blood and then passed into the urine. But if this waste does not dissolve fully, crystals are formed and these might get stuck in the ureter. Renal stones are common though and can be treated effectively. But you should first know how to detect it.

Signs and symptoms
If kidney stones are small, they might pass on with urine, and not cause any pain. But large stones can obstruct the flow of urine and lead to severe pain. Also remember that the location of the stone and the way it is travelling through your urinary tract can affect the symptoms you face. Sometimes, you might feel a sharp pain in your back or lower abdomen. In other cases, the pain may be constant or come and go, or the intensity might fluctuate.

Here are some other symptoms to watch out for

  1. Pain during urination, cloudy urine, urine that smells different and the frequent urge to urinate
  2. Blood due to kidney stones can make urine pink, red, or brown
  3. Nausea, vomiting, fever or chills
  4. Pain that increases in severity and stops you from standing, sitting or lying easily
  5. The pain might start in the early morning or late night, since people urinate less then

Though small kidney stones are often dissolved with medication, larger stones might create blockages and have to be removed in a hospital. The good news is that, now you don’t have to undergo any invasive surgery to get rid of renal stones. The new-age Holmium YAG laser technique can carry out this process with minimal cuts.
This laser sends intense and short infrared light pulses to break the stones into tiny pieces, which can then be passed out with urine. Patients also face lesser complications and get well quickly too.

More on the procedure

  1. The laser beam passes through a 0.2mm wide wire, which can easily rotate to reach stones whether big or small. Any location in the kidneys, tubes or bladders also becomes easily accessible. Hence the wire can directly contact the stone, without harming any other tissue.
  2. In laser lithotripsy, a very thin tube with a small camera is inserted into the patient’s urethra to guide the doctor towards the stone. Laser pulses, each lasting not even 0.0003 seconds are then targeted towards the stone.
  3. Depending on the number and size of stones, this treatment takes 10 minutes to 1 hour and is conducted under general anesthesia. The patients recover fast and are discharged soon after.
  4. The disintegrated pieces of the stones are also sent for analysis to see what is causing the problem and how the patient can prevent it in future.

Kidney stones can be prevented by drinking lots of water and avoiding alcohol. If the stones are being caused by uric acid, ammonia, or calcium, then certain diet changes might be suggested. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Urologist.
