My Kids Don't Like Milk.- common dialogue by the mothers
Drinking milk isn?t the only way to enjoy its benefits. For example, try making soup and oatmeal or other hot cereals with milk instead of water. Pour milk over cold cereal for breakfast or a snack. Incorporate milk into a fruit smoothie or milkshake. Chocolate milk and cocoa made with milk are also ways to increase the milk in your child?s diet.
Sources of calcium also might include an ounce or two of cheese a cup of calcium-enriched orange juice, or a small carton of yogurt. Your kids can also get calcium from dark green, leafy vegetables like kale or foods such as broccoli, almonds, tortillas, or tofu made with calcium.

Reasons Behind Iron Deficiency In Children!

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)

Reasons Behind Iron Deficiency In Children!

Iron deficiency is a common condition in children. It occurs when there is a scarcity of iron in the child's system due to malnutrition. Iron is an extremely important mineral that is required for growth and development in young ones. It is an essential nutrient for formation of Hemoglobin, which transports Oxygen and Carbon dioxide through the bloodstream and it is also essential for the functioning of the muscles. If the child's diet lacks iron then the condition might worsen and turn into anemia.

Children need different levels of iron intake at different ages for proper development of all mental and physical faculties. As the child gets older and reaches the age of puberty, the requirement of iron and other minerals also increases. Deficiency of it causes anemia specific to iron.

Deficiencies can lead to various nutritional disorders that may cause severe complications.

The primary cause of iron deficiency in children is an improper diet which leads to a lack of nourishment. There are a number of other causes of the problem, some of which are as follows:

  1. Low birth weight
  2. Excessive intake of cow's milk at less than 2 years of age
  3. Feeding exclusively on breastmilk beyond 6 months of age
  4. Lead poisoning
  5. Gastrointestinal disease or infection
  6. Improper diet of the mother during pregnancy
  7. Chronic diarrhea
  8. Infestation of parasites in the digestive system.

If the problem arises due to dietary deficiency, it can be easily solved by making simple modifications to the child's diet plan. If the condition stems from other factors or diseases, the child must be taken to a doctor immediately for a medical diagnosis and remedial treatment. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Pediatrician.

General Physician,
If you feel excessive sleep or tiredness/ head spinning or vertigo like feeling you have to make sure you have no anaemia or hypothyroidism by doing a blood CBC & TSH and inform me directly 10 Study Tips to Improve Your Learning Study Tip 1: Underlining Underlining is one of the simplest and best known study tips. It’s easy to highlight the most significant parts of what you’re reading. One key sentence per paragraph and a few important phrases here and there. You can only retain a certain amount so it’s best to retain the most important information. Study Tip 2: Make your own note and taking notes is one of the most widespread study skills out there. Essentially the aim of note-taking is to summarise lectures or articles in your own words so you can easily remember the ideas. Study Tip 3: Mind mapping A good Mind map can save you many hours of study and further consolidate your knowledge for your exams. Mind Maps are an extremely versatile tools. They can be used for brainstorming, outlining essays or study topics and for general exam preparation, ExamTime offers the ability to create Mind Maps quickly and easily which makes them the ideal tool when it comes to exams. Study Tip 4: Flash cards:- Using these are a particularly effective method of learning when trying to assimilate different facts, dates, formulas or vocabulary. Subjects such as History, Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography or any language are made much easier if you incorporate Flashcards in to your study. Study Tip 5: Case Studies Sometimes it can be difficult to grasp the implications of some theories. This is where studying case studies can be a big help. Case studies can help you visualise a theory and place it in a more familiar and realistic context. This is especially useful in business or law subjects. Study Tip 6: Quizzes are an excellent way to review study notes in the weeks and days before an exam. Quizzes can show where your strengths and weaknesses are, so it allows you to focus your efforts more precisely. Moreover, if you share your Study Quiz with your classmates and test each other as much as possible you can discover even more details and areas you may have overlooked. So before any exam, make sure you create and share a bunch of different Quizzes with your Friends. Study Tip 7: Brainstorming This is another study technique that is ideal for studying with friends and/or classmates. Brainstorming is a great way to expand every possible idea out of any topic. Just get a bunch of friends together and shoot the breeze, there are no wrong answers when brainstorming – just talk and capture the ideas, you can review afterward. Study Tip 8: Mnemonic Rules Mnemonics are especially useful when memorising lists and sets. Mnemonics rules basically work by associating certain concepts with other concepts that are more familiar to us. There are many different ways to make mnemonics and these can be individual to the person. Study Tip 9: ORGANISE your study One of the most effective study skills is also one of the most often overlooked; this is organising your study. Creating a TIME TABLE gives you goals and a time in which to achieve them. Having a study timetable as you study is greatly motivational Study Tip 10: Drawing Many people find it easier to recall images rather than text that is why they are better able to memorise concepts if they associate them with pictures or drawings.

Hi doctors my baby is 2 months doctor prescribed her vitamin d drops I have heard d drops make baby dark is that true...
Infants who are exclusively breastfed but who do not receive supplemental vitamin D or adequate sunlight exposure are at increased risk of developing vitamin D deficiency and/or rickets. Infants with darker pigmentation are at greater risk of vitamin D deficiency, a fact explained by the greater risk of deficiency at birth and the decreased vitamin D content in milk from women who themselves are deficient. Although vitamin D concentrations can be increased in milk of lactating women by using large vitamin D supplements, such high-dose supplementation studies in lactating women have not been validated and demonstrated to be safe in larger, more representative populations of women across various parts of the world. Recommendations to universally supplement breastfeeding mothers with high-dose vitamin D cannot be made at this time. Therefore, supplements given to the infant are necessary.

What is short stature. What is growth failure?
What is a growth disorder?

A growth disorder is any type of problem in infants, children, or teenagers that prevents normal growth. Normal growth depends upon several factors, such as nutrition, genetics, and hormones (chemical messengers of the body). Hormones are necessary for normal growth and development; they regulate the body's growth, metabolism (the physical and chemical processes of the body), and sexual development and function.

Endocrine (hormonal) causes of growth disorders include thyroid hormone deficiency (hypothyroidism), growth hormone deficiency, hypopituitarism, or other hormone disorders. However, some growth problems are not necessarily growth disorders; normal variants of growth patterns include genetic short height (familial short stature) and slow growth/delayed puberty (constitutional growth delay).

Although growth hormone was originally used to treat growth hormone deficiency (this group of patients respond the best to growth hormone therapy), there have been other conditions for which growth hormone therapy has been approved for use. These include Turner syndrome, chronic renal insufficiency, Prader-Willi syndrome, and children who were small for gestational age and have not caught up in their growth by the age of two years. In 2003 the FDA approved the use of growth hormone for children who have

Can I give junior horlics to my baby, who is one year old? What kinds of food he should have in this age?
These are of no benefit other than changing the taste. Give whatever you eat in a form which he can eat easily. Vegetables, pulses, rice, egg etc. Soups good. Juices do not benefit much. Reduce milk.

Gradually start an exercise program, eat right and continue breast-feeding to help shed those pounds. Breastfeed Your Baby. Breast-feeding your baby can help you shed pounds. ... Start Exercising. Walking after a C section can speed recovery. ... Eat Healthy. Eat a healthy breakfast. ... Limit Unhealthy Foods. Breast-feeding moms lose more weight three months post-partum than moms who don’t breast-feed. If you continue to breast-feed after your baby is 4 to 6 months, you will continue to lose weight. Speak to your doctor first, but after six to eight weeks you can gradually increase your activity level and start an exercise routine. Start slowly and engage in aerobic and toning exercises. Eat five to six small meals a day and never skip a meal. Drink eight to nine glasses of fluid a day – preferably water. Every new mom should be able to indulge in dessert now and then, but do so sparingly. Cakes, cookies, ice cream and candy contain a lot of saturated fat, sugar and calories, which will make the numbers on the scale creep up rather than down. Snacking is important, but avoid salty snacks, such as potato chips, and choose fruits and vegetables instead. Steer clear of soda, juice and other sugary beverages. Their sugar and calorie content can add up, preventing you from losing weight.

My daughter is about two years old. Her grand parents are worried about her weight & giving junk food & soft drinks inorder to increase her weight. She weighs 9.5kg. Is it too low.

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
Junk food and soft drinks will increase body fat, and lead to unhealthy weight gain will be detrimental to her in long run. Give her home diet inspire her to play lot. Her weight is not too low and is on lower side of range. Weight depends on genetic constitution too. Children are like their parents.

These days most multivitamin syrups contain the recommended doses of vitamins minerals and trace elements. You don't need to give additional zinc. Most of the times the mothers are prescribed multivitamins calcium and iron tablets. Check with your obstetrician.

Your daughter who at 13 years age is overweight needs a proper diet, exercise and counseling. You can consult a dietician to start her on a proper diet along with walking in the morning and evening. She may need some supplements and protein powder so that she does not become giddy. As per her weight she needs around 3.5 liters of fluids which includes water, green coconut water, nimbu pani without sugar, green tea and soup. If she has this low carb, no sugar diet you will get good results. She also needs to learn yoga so that her menstrual cycle starts.

Why vaccination of baby is confusing? Which Standard should we follow as Government Schedule and Private Schedule are different.

Why vaccination of baby is confusing? Which Standard should we follow as Government Schedule and Private Schedule are...
Hello lybrate user, best schedule to follow is the schedule mentioned by the indian academy of pediatrics which includes all the vaccines that are important for your baby. The govt schedule is the basic immunization model and consists of all the mandatory vaccines but certain optional vaccines due to affordability issues have not been included. So iap includes all the vaccines mandatory as well as optional. So if affordability is not an issue you could go for the iap schedule which all private practitioners follow.
