I'm 18 years old. I'm suffering from tooth cavity. What should I do?

BDS
Dentist,
Most common treatment available for dental cavity is filling. It may be silver, cement or resin depending on type of cavity. If cavity is deep and patient is suffering from pain and sensitivity then root canal treatment may be required.

Hi I'm 23 old guy and my gums bleed wen I brush n I feel tat I hv gaps between them coz it used to perfect n strong but it's no longer there. Could u plzzz suggest wat would be the best option.

Oral Implantologist (New York University), Advanced Aesthetic Oral & Dental Surgeon. BDS (India)
Dentist, Mumbai
Bleeding gums is a sign of gum infection & inflammation which happens because of plaque & calculus deposition on tooth & border of gums. You need to get a clean up (oral prophylaxis) done to solve the bleeding problem. As for the gaps between your teeth, if it is too huge & making you conscious about your smile & looks, you need to get braces treatment done. If the gaps are not too wide your problem may be solved with removable wire appliance & you may not need to put braces.

White Patches on Teeth - Causes and Management

White Patches on Teeth - Causes and Management

White patches on teeth are formed due to many reasons. There are many factors contributing to this. The appearance of the white patches is just like tiny white patches or spots randomly here and there on the teeth. They look odd and may give an impression of poor health and hygiene.

The causes of white patches on the teeth

White patches are formed on the teeth for the following common reasons:

  • If the teeth are ill formed during development and more calcium is released than required during the development stages, then the excess calcium gets deposited on the teeth as the white patches. You may see them as spots which many be light in color or flashy white.
  • Fluorosis is another common factor, which causes the white patches. This occurs in childhood. During the developing years, if the child's teeth get an excess supply of fluorides, then the white patches develop on the teeth.
  • Mineral depletion is another cause for the white patches. This happens mostly for loss of calcium. If calcium is scarce, then the small white spots are developed on teeth, and the problem is referred to as hypocalcification.
  • If you had been wearing braces for years, and didn't take care of teeth around the braces, then also white spots may develop when you take off the braces.

The various ways of treating the white spots
While the damage is done due to hypocalcification in developmental stages or due to excess fluorides in the developing years can't be reversed, but the appearance can definitely be taken care of. The management is done as follows:

  • Tooth bleaching is an option. The bleach brings uniformity in the teeth color and therefore, conceals the discoloration.
  • Air abrasion is another process where tiny crystal particles are blown towards the patches of calcium deposits, and this depletes the calcium. The removal of excess calcium brings a balance in teeth color.
  • If there are dentures or gaps formed in the teeth after removal of calcium deposits, then a filling will be done to add to the portion to bring natural color balance and smoothness.
  • Tooth capping and porcelain veneer can be added or crowned on tooth so that complete concealing is done of the white spots; this is done when in no other way the visible spots can be managed.

Prevention is better than cure and therefore, practicing dental hygiene and oral care is the best way to prevent the problem. Also a periodic dental checkup has to be done in every six months.

Kindly get scaling done and use mouth wash and gum paint twice daily for 15 days. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique to maintain your oral hygiene. Also notice that you are not constipated most of the times as this is also one of the reasons for bad breath.

This could be your third molar or wisdom tooth which is erupting. Go to dentist and get an x-ray done. If its erupting perfectly then medications will help you otherwise extraction is the solution.

Hello lybrate-user, see there is just a myth that teeth becomes pearly white, teeth are never very white, the natural colour of teeth is little yellowish but yes if they are very yellow it cud be due to deposits on the teeth also, so kindly visit a nearby dentist and get cleaning done.

Hi bleeding is the indication of gum disease known as gingivitis. It happens due to plaque and tarter deposition between gums and teeth. Go for cleaning and bleaching. Rinse your mouth with chlorhexidine mouthwash. Brush regularly two times daily.

Teeth Whitening - Are You the Right Candidate for it?

Teeth Whitening - Are You the Right Candidate for it?

If we think about what attracts us to a person in general, the first thing that we can think of is a great, warm smile. A good set of well-aligned white teeth is an important aspect of this great smile. However, white teeth remain an elusive thing for most of us. Some of the common reasons for discolored teeth are as below.

  1. Ageing
  2. Hypo mineralized tooth structure
  3. Fluourosis
  4. Food habits
  5. Tobacco smoking/chewing (learn more for Smoking  Effect on Teeth)
  6. Side effects of medication (tetracyclines, for instance)

The degree of discoloration varies widely and also is hereditary. Whatever the reasons, there is the option of tooth whitening, which is effective with optimal oral health and good oral hygiene habits. Tooth whitening is not for everybody though, the following are the definite contraindications.

  1. Teeth with fillings: The bleaching agents work best on natural tooth structure. Whether it is a crown or a veneer or a bridge, the bleaching agent will not work on these tooth-colored fillings and composite resins. On the contrary, using bleaching agent on a tooth filling can produce uneven whitening. The teeth without fillings will appear lighter than those with fillings. If the person has discoloration due to fluorosis or any other reason, then it is ideal to complete any pending restorative work before initiating tooth whitening procedure. This should be allowed to settle in for about 2 weeks. After that, whitening should be undertaken which will ensure the best results and match with the composite filling/veneer/crowns. In people with multiple restorations, whitening can result in uneven coloration of the teeth and so veneers or crowns would be better suited than whitening.
  2. Sensitive teeth: Sensitivity is an indication that the dentin is exposed or is covered by a very thin layer of enamel. Whitening agents will not work very well in these cases.
  3. Poor oral health (gingivitis, worn enamel, cavities, and root decay): The whitening agent can irritate the gums or penetrate the existing decay or worn enamel leading to sensitivity. The tooth whitening agent works on the enamel, and as the tooth surfaces do not have enamel, they do not produce a whitening effect.
  4. Age: Hydrogen peroxide which is the most common bleaching agent is not safe for use in children below 16 years of age. The pulp chambers are quite high and the tooth is still forming, so bleaching agents are not to be used.

While choosing to go for tooth whitening, one thing to bear in mind is that it is not a permanent solution to discolored teeth and might require repetition of the treatment. Having a detailed discussion will help set realistic expectations and achieve optimal results.

I have teeth sensitivity from a week, what should I do?

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist,
I have teeth sensitivity from a week, what should I do?
A major cause of tooth sensitivity is root exposure. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations (full mouth x-ray) to decide upon treatment. You may need cleaning along with desensitizing procedures and / or artificial enamel filling. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person. Until then apply a desensitizing paste (sensodyne tooth paste) on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min until you brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight will be better. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush.
