Hello doctor My son is 3 year old He has cold and cough from last 25 days He has been on medicines ,it is reducing gradually. The doctor has tried antibiotics and has now given deriphyllin syrup. When asked he said the child has asthma. We are shocked by this and can not understand as we don't see any asthmatic symptoms in our child. Your opinion.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Mumbai
Hello. I understand your concern. Persistent cough is one of the feature of asthma. Repeated cough may be due to diverse reasons. We cannot label child as asthma before 5 years of age. But will have to keep this thing in mind if he continues to have repeated cough.

Are there any long-term effects associated with taking ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) medications? If so, what are they and what medications are implicated?

Mood swings, irritability, tics, alteration in appetite, delayed growth are all side effects of that treatment. Please consult a proper homeopathic doctor for this. I would suggest you to go for at least one consultation. Either with me or some other doctor whom you trust. That will be better for you. Still if you have any queries, please feel free to ask me. Take care :)

Exclusive Breast feeding up to 6 months of age is amrit for baby. Give her breast feed. What you r calling vomiting is regurgitation. Burping is answer. Tests are mostly create confusion if not needed.

Hi lybrate-user. It is not a serious issue. It is common to have late speaking especially in nuclear families. Try more to talk to him. They learn fast when there are many people around them to talk.

My baby tended to look to the left and her head has become flat on left. Now she only wants to sleep on his right side and cries while I sleep her on her back. She is also uncomfortable in lap. Will it cause problems for her when she grows up. If yes what to do to correct the problem.

Let the baby sleep which ever way she is comfortable. Need not force to sleep in a particular position. It won't effect in any way later on. The shape of the head will also get corrected by itself as the baby grows.

Do I have dyslexia I always have writing and reading problem I am 20 what should I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
At your age you can identify the particular words that pose a problem to you and then write those words down and articulate the letters and the words they form just as a young kid would do; and you will register an audio-visual memory of those particular words to gradually develop an audio-visual impression and memory of the same. It will be even more useful to write the meanings of those words and relate to them as well. You could sing the words and meanings to make a lasting impression. But you should not rush all the methods at once to learn quicker: it will only confuse you and make it even more difficult, and will lead to frustration. In a more advanced situation you can print index cards of those words and learn to memorize them in the same fashion as mentioned above. As time goes by you may get audio books and listen to them often but always in an atmosphere conducive to good listening. If you wish you could also get the help of reading teachers who will professionally take you from simple material to higher material as you advance in the learning program. The audio mode of learning is slower than the visual mode but speed is not an immediate objective, comprehension and word recognition is. It will be a long process but if you are determined, it will be rewarding. You could have benefited from an earlier intervention, like in childhood, if they had noticed and acted then. Please remember that your intelligence is not in question. So it is up to your commitment, sincerity and above all perseverance.

If your child is eating well and active without any fever or any other complaints then do not worry. Please do go for regular followup with your doctor and let the doctor personally check your son. Certain good habits to inculcate are as follows: give homemade food which is freshly prepared. Let him have seasonal vegetables and fruits everyday. Avoid outside food (or restrict it to a few occasions) including processed/packaged food and soda based drinks. Read more about healthy lifestyle for the whole family and bring in discipline in daily routine.
