Know Everything About Hypochondriasis

Know Everything About Hypochondriasis

People who are constantly troubled by the fear of physical illness or who excessively feel worried about their health are commonly referred to as hypochondriacs. This phenomenon is called somatic symptom disorder, also known as hypochondria or hypochondriasis. Despite the evidence of medical tests proving that they do not suffer from any disease or illness, hypochondriacs are perpetually worried about their health. This is mainly because of their misinterpretation of minor health problems or normal body functions as something serious. Somatic symptom disorder affects both males and females equally, and it usually happens during early adulthood.

Causes and symptoms: Their complaints may range from minor issues like pain or stress to more serious problems concerning breathing or headaches. Hypochondriacs rarely try to deceive themselves, and they genuinely believe that they have health problems, however unrealistic their beliefs might be. The exact causes are indefinite and unknown, but they generally arise from considerable physical or sexual abuse in their early childhood. Moreover, parents or close relatives suffering from the disorder may also induce such fears into the child, who would eventually behave in a similar pattern later in adulthood.

Diagnosis: Diagnosis of the disorder can be very troublesome, mainly because of their inherent conviction that they are suffering from physical illness. However, the disorder can be treated through proper supportive care or psychotherapy. Antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs are also used sometimes.

Dealing with the disorder: Hypochondria can often lead to a chronic condition, which can be long lasting. Although there are no definite ways of preventing it, there is one method to reduce the intensity of the symptoms and help patients cope up with the disorder. It is by providing them a supportive and understanding environment, one in which they can fight the distress and trouble that comes along with the somatic symptom disorder. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychiatrist and ask a free question.

Iam going to gym for last 5 days, I have full of body pains, and also what diet I have to maintain, is morning lemon water is good for health.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye. When you are a beginner in the gym you don't want to start using heavy weights on the first day itself. Start with it gradually. Body ache is normal, with continuous workout it should subside. Your ideal weight is 76 kgs. So, you need to lose weight. Hye. In order to lose weight you must either eat sensibly and exercise to burn off calories. Eat as per the body's needs. Food that is not used to fuel the body is stored as fat. A major component of losing weight is to make smarter food choices. Here's how: Limit non-nutritious foods, such as: Sugar, honey, syrups and candy, pastries, donuts, pies, cakes and cookies, soft drinks, sweetened juices and alcoholic beverages Cut down on high-fat foods by: Choosing poultry, fish or lean red meat. Choosing low-fat cooking methods, such as baking, broiling, steaming, grilling and boiling. Avoiding high-fat snacks like chips and chocolate. Avoiding fried foods. Using less margarine and mayonnaise. Avoiding high-fat gravies, cream sauces and cream-based dishes. Eat a variety of foods, including: Fruit and vegetables, whole grains, breads, cereal, rice and pasta, dairy products, such as low-fat or non-fat milk or yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese and low-fat cheese, protein-rich foods like chicken,  fish, dals and legumes, or beans should be included in your diet. Change your eating habits: Eat three balanced meals a day to help control your hunger. Watch portion sizes and eat small servings of a variety of foods. Choose low-calorie snacks. Eat only when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfied. Eat slowly and try not to perform other tasks while eating. Find other activities to distract you from food, such as walking, taking up a hobby or being involved in the community. Include regular exercise in your daily routine.

Thank you for your earlier responses .now I want to say my problem, I studied well up to sixth in my village . But when I changed my school for further education in town I also studied well, my friend who is jealous of me getting rank started saying that I will ' mug up'and all the friends started teasing me that I will mug up and all friends lose interest of doing friendship. It took heavy effect on me and took me in depressed state. When I completed my tenth I became lonely I am unable to move closely with my college friends also. So what should I do.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

You have taken your friends' criticism of your mugging too seriously. I suppose at that age it is likely to affect your more. Now you are grown up some and you can dismiss that affect easily if you met with a counselor. As you grow and as you do well academically, you must grow in confidence. Otherwise, it is more like a qualification and not an education. Education brings about as change in who you are. Use your learning and determine that other's opinion of you is to be taken seriously only if it is true. Otherwise it goes into the wastebasket.

I am a 27 yrs old girl, I am facing lots of problem in my relationship. I also introduced my bf to my parents but they are not ready to accept him. I have been in this relationship more than 1.5 year. I and my bf have already decided that we will not go against our parents. I am feeling very insecure because my bf took 7-8 times back foot from this relationship. Each and every time he used to talk about my parents that they are not agree and I will not got against them. Every time when I expected his support I found myself alone in front of our parents. I don't know what should I do, I am feeling very depressed because of his behavior. At times I feel its very simple to break this relationship and move on. Every time I only convinced him that everything will be fine. Earlier every time I took initiative whenver he broke up with me but this time I really felt broken and I havn't talked with him since last 6 days. I dnt knw what I should do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I think that your parents? reason to disapprove of this relationship must be considered, if it is valid. If it is not justified, then you can wait. But I understand that both of you have agreed not to do anything as long as they disapprove. That is a good decision. Then how come he is constantly referring to that? is he insecure? in that case you must let him go because it is not fair to hold on to him, if the future is not secure. I am only surprised that since he had agreed, he must also be patient. During the interim you must work on your parents to change their mind. If they are adamant then it seems like a losing battle. You must stop convincing him every time he is reminded about the parents? being against this relationship. He either stays committed or quits, and you need not blame him either. Leave him from an okay position and seek another but this time someone whom your parents will approve. If this is the time and opportunity to stop the relationship completely since you have already stopped talking to him, then go ahead and leave it now. The delay to decide will only lead to unwelcome compromises.

I think I am suffering with social phobia. When I go to office, I am thinking that everybody is watching me and judging me. It hurts me mentally and it disturbs a lot from doing my job at that moment. Ofcourse when I leave from office and go to home, I am fearing about public if they r judging me and commenting behind me.:-( I need help to cure this fear. Can you please suggest me sir/madam?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Hello, welcome to lybrate from your account, that whenever you go out you feel like that people are watching you, judging you. Till this it seems like that you might have the fear of facing the public, as if they would judge you. This can account for social phobia. However for the next part of your complain, that once you come back at home, you still feel afraid of them, keep thinking that they might be commenting behind your back on you. This doesn't happen in social phobia. These kind of symptoms and the symptoms of social phobia can be seen in the beginning or florid psychosis as well. Both of the conditions have different treatments as well. Hence to reach a definite conclusion regarding your diagnosis, a detailed assessment by an expert psychiatrist is required who will further decide the treatment as well for your condition. Both of these conditions if left untreated can led to severe morbidity and mortality. If you feel like having a detailed conversation regarding your problem in private you can consult me

I recently read that researchers believe certain foods might cure Alzheimer’s disease. Is this true? If so, which foods do this and how much would you have to consume to get the benefits?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Consuming foods such as ginger, green tea, fatty fish, soy products, blueberries, and other dark berries may protect these important cells from damage. Evidence suggests that the DHA found in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia by reducing beta-amyloid plaques. Food sources include cold-water fish such as salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, and sardines. You can also supplement with fish oil.

Hi, i've a healthy relationship with a guy, but m really worried abt him, he is always saying things like I feel ionely, not loved and that no one cares, no one understands, he has suicidal thoughts sometimes which makes me very frightened and I really want to help him, what should I do?

Masters in counseling psychology, Counseling psychologist, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapist
Psychologist, Mumbai
He may be going through some emotional turmoil or some professional difficulties. Have open communication with him about it without giving any advice and just listening to him. If there is nothing like this, he may be just going through low phase where he wants more attention and support. Don't let him feel like a victim, which he already does. He is just feeling pity for himself which needs to be stopped.

Hello sir, I'm suffering from headache from last few week, and I have sinus also, what should I do? please tell me? I can not concentrate on my studies.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)
Psychiatrist, Davanagere
Hi there ~ sinusitis and headaches are common. If you feel heaviness in the head, pain worse with stooping forwards or bending forwards, runny nose with a post-nasal drip and also problems with itchy throat nose and ear block, you probably have severe sinusitis, either allergic, viral or bacterial. If it does not resolve by this evening or tomorrow morning despite good food, adequate sleep and plenty of fluids, please consult a general physician. Hope this helps.
