Hi. I am 24 years male. In the public my hands wil shake. So what shld I do. Plzz suggest.
A lot of people have tremors, mostly without any major reason. Anxiety increases tremors. So to reduce them you need to relax. First thing you need to work upon is try not to worry about the tremor itself! let it happen. It's no big deal. Next, practice simple relaxation techniques like slow and deep breathing, imagery, etc. Learn muscle relaxation. Once practised, you can apply these techniques in public to further reduce your tremors.

I am a smoking addict person so please tell me how can I get rid of it as I am suffering from cough and cold.

I am a smoking addict person so please tell me how can I get rid of it as I am suffering from cough and cold.
Congratulations that you want to quit smoking. Tobacco consumption, either through smoke or other edible forms, is always harmful. The desire to quit is a good starting point. The best way to quit is to know more about the ill-effects of tobacco. The knowledge is astounding and scary. That information itself should help you to want to quit. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. There are more than 4000 harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke!!! You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. Then you need to identify why you smoke: there is an oral need, the nicotine effect, the psychological effect of covering up some other issue, for style, to impress, etc. You may discover that the reasons may be unimportant at this stage because you have become too addicted and the habit has become compulsive. You should start exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need, for a little while. You may take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. You may join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. Don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. As Mark Twain once jocularly said, “giving up smoking is easy; I have done it many times”. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

I suffer from depression for a long time, feel stressed most of the time with frequent bouts of severe panic. I have become very timid and withdrawn that I have been facing a diminishing financial profile, worsening relations and naturally a target of predatory minds many times. It is so debilitating that I can't finish my masters degree and totally dysfunctional that I couldn't do simple things let alone pursue a career and have a family. I was among the toppers in my school till plus two, highly motivated and popular with great expectations in my extended relations and friends for my talent including that in fine arts. I had to go through Meningitis subsequently along with demise of my Grandma who had been the pillar of strength after the sudden death of my mom. The events took a nose dive since then with education taking backseat and my failing to cope with peer pressure in education. I have severe aversion to food and disturbed sleep pattern which make the condition even worse. I have been on medication for the past 24 years, I think I became psychologically and physically dependant on those medicines with their adverse effects getting more potent by the day. I'm single with almost no close relatives and with very few friends need to know if there are any treatments with prognosis however little good it is? I am completely disenchanted with life and having ideas of suicide getting more frequent gaining strength by every passing momentThank you.

Your problem is that you have not sought counseling in tandem with the medication. You need to combine these two therapies to get the best results. When you were doing yoru plus two you would have been in your late teens: a time when hormonal imbalances and resolving all childhood issues that failed to get adequate attention. Because it has likely begun at that time, it is certain that an unresolved issue from childhood is a matter to contend with in therapy. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Social Anxiety Disorder: How to Let Go of your Fears!

MBBS MD
Psychiatrist, Chandigarh
Social Anxiety Disorder: How to Let Go of your Fears!

Are you suffering from social anxiety phobia and are looking for ways to get over it? Social anxiety refers to the anxiety in anticipating any kind of social situation or after a certain situation. The fear of evaluation accounts for being the primary factor of social anxiety phobia. Here are the various ways by which you can deal with social anxiety phobia:

  1. Self-help Manual: Self-help manuals are a supplement for this therapy. They act as an effective tool, which helps you to work on your own.

  2. Visit a Therapist: In case your social anxiety phobia is hampering things you need to do along with your social activities, and your self-help measures have failed, you need a therapist. Choose a therapist who specializes in anxiety disorders.

  3. Practice Deep Breathing Regularly: Engaging yourself in deep breathing, before a situation which provokes or triggers your social anxiety, is effective. You need to undertake deep breathing for several minutes every day. This will make it a habit for you, so that you do not focus too much on deep breathing during a situation, thereby missing out on the conversation.

  4. Create an Exposure Hierarchy: An exposure hierarchy refers to a list. In this list, you have to write down about all the various types of situations when your social anxiety phobia gets triggered. The list has to be made in a ladder format, and by performing the easiest behaviors first, you should move up the list. For creating exposure hierarchy, you should note down 10 anxiety triggering social situations you experience, and rate them on a scale of 100. You can also join Toastmasters, which is a website where links to several worksheets based on coping with social anxiety are provided.

  5. Create your Goals: When you feel anxious, it is likely for you to eliminate anything positive during that situation. You might be doing great, but yet face distress in everyday activities because of feelings of anxiety. For this purpose, it is recommended for you to create objective behavioral goals.

  6. Maintain a Rational Outlook: Try to get rid of any bleak thoughts, which hamper your performance and trigger your social anxiety phobia. Also stay away from any kind of unrealistic thoughts, which are positive in an irrational way. Before any situation which enhances your anxiety, you should convince yourself about how it is a familiar situation to you, which you have dealt with smoothly in the past.

If your social anxiety phobia is getting in the way of achieving your goals and is disabling you from living the kind of life you seek, it is important for you to consult a Psychiatrist and go for regular therapy sessions.

Dear Depak, Please write the diagnosis which the doctor made after examining you so that i may be able to catch up. Climbing stairs will raise the heat beating rate in any person. Feeling exhausted whenever you go out also may be a natural reaction of your body needing rest. With continued use of ointment your pain may subside, your back may relax. Please wait.

How can improve my memory. I forget something sometimes that's very dangerous situation. Please suggest me.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Improving memory is a multifactorial process and requires good concentration levels, good attention span and ability to recollect and interpret things accordingly. In case you tend to forget things often, that may be due to poor attention span, easy distractibility and multiple things at work in your mind. To improvise on memory take it slow, organise things in order of importance. Have a good sleep at night.
