Side Effects of Different Contraceptive Methods

DGO, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Faridabad
Side Effects of Different Contraceptive Methods

Use of contraceptives is really important to avoid unwanted pregnancy. Countries like China and India, facing the problem of population explosion lay more stress on the use of contraceptives. However, you must always use or take oral and barrier contraceptives following the advice of a medical practitioner unless it is absolutely necessary to go ahead without consultation. The reason behind medical assistance is your own health. Contraceptive methods do have a vast range of side effects that can result in health hazards. There are various kinds of contraceptives; each having its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Being acquainted with the side effects of some contraceptive methods can help you choose wisely in times of need.

  • Possible side-effects of using condoms: Some men are allergic to latex. Using condoms can lead to heightened sensitivity. It can also lead to rashes in your genitals. Condoms are not foolproof. They do not provide total protection against sexually transmitted infections, HPV or against Syphilis and Herpes. These diseases can be contracted by coming in contact with genital skin that is not covered by a condom.
  • Possible side-effects of a Contraceptive Film: A contraceptive film might act as an interruption in your sexual activities if it is not placed properly, that is to say it must come in contact with the cervix to be effective. Using the film nonoxynol- very frequently can make you susceptible to life threatening diseases like HIV and other STIs.
  • Possible side-effects of a Cervical Cap: A cervical cap has to be inserted by a clinician and requires immense care to be fitted in later. Some of its side - effects can be of serious concern. If it is left inside for more than forty eight hours, it can result in toxic shock syndrome. Toxic shock syndrome is an infection that mars your overall health. It is also known to increase the chances of inflammation of the surface of your cervix.
  • Possible side-effects of Progestin only pills: Progestin only pills or mini pills can subject you to long- lasting depression. It can make you feel bloated and can actually increase your weight to a great extent if used on a regular basis. Minipills lead to irregularities in your menstrual cycle and might also make bleeding during menstruation scanty.
  • Possible side-effects of combined oral contraceptives: If this is your first month on combined oral contraceptives, you might feel nauseous and they can give you a terrible headache. Women taking these pills have a higher chance of developing cervical dysplasia. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency: Causes and Symptoms

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency: Causes and Symptoms

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency or EPI is also known as pancreatic deficiency, a disorder where the pancreas is unable to produce sufficient amount of enzymes that are required to digest food. The pancreatic enzymes help to break down and absorb nutrients from the food in the small intestine. So, this disease causes nutritional deficiencies.

Causes of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency :

This condition is generally caused as a complication of other diseases because EPI develops only as a result of severe damage to the pancreas. The following reasons can cause EPI:

  1. Inflammation of the pancreas: After surgery in the pancreas, stomach or the intestines, there may be inflammation in the pancreas as a post-surgical complication. A high content of triglyceride fat in the blood can also cause pancreatic inflammation and hinder the secretion of the enzymes.
  2. Chronic Pancreatitis: In this disease, the pancreatic ducts are swollen and blocked and so the digestive enzymes cannot be passed into the small intestine. This condition is often caused by a heavy consumption of alcohol.
  3. Cystic Fibrosis: The digestive fluids and enzymes become thick and sticky and block the passageways of the pancreas and other organs like the lungs and the kidneys. This can obstruct secretion and passage of enzymes afterwards.
  4. Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome or SBDS: SBDS is an autosomal recessive genetic condition where enzyme producing pancreatic cells is not formed properly. This rare disorder causes a number of associated disorders like bone marrow diseases, skeletal defects and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.

Symptoms of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency:

Symptoms of EPI often appear in the middle stages of the disease when the process of absorption of nutrients has already been affected. The common warning signs are:

  1. Digestive problems like gas, diarrhea and indigestion because the food remains mostly undigested.
  2. Severe and frequent stomach pain in the lower abdominal region
  3. Greasy stools due to the excretion of undigested fat
  4. Rapid loss of weight and body mass due to malabsorption of nutrients
  5. Constantly feeling bloated and full even if you have not eaten anything
  6. A general sense of fatigue and exhaustion
  7. Excessive bleeding from small wounds because protein deficiencies hamper blood clotting
  8. Pain in the muscles and bones
  9. Increased susceptibility to infections of the body system
  10. Anemia
  11. Joint pains
  12. Abnormal swelling of the limbs or edema

From the hormonal standpoint, multiple miscarriage can occur due to suboptimal thyroids, progesterone and metabolic disturbances. Considering your fluctuating TSH, I would like to rule out Autoimmune Thyroiditis, another possible cause of miscarriage. I would consider switching you from your present tbyroid meds to a combination of T3 and T4 and investigate for other hormone and metabolic deficiencies.

I have cough. Cough increases only in cold. In night when I am on bed its normal and in day time it increases. I have this problem since 2 years. I take treatment from but they told me yiu have infection. I had test my blood and urine all normal.

One of the simplest home remedies for a cough is to cut onions. Breathing in the strong vapors can help stop coughing. You can a make a cough syrup from baked onion juice, comfrey tea and honey. Drink it daily to get relief from a dry cough. Another option is to combine one-half teaspoon of onion juice with one teaspoon of pure honey. Swallow this solution at least twice a day to alleviate a cough and soothe your throat. This will be medicine to you.

Do You Know What Causes Viral Diseases to Spread?

What causes viral diseases to spread?

Caused by the microorganisms called viruses, infections pertaining to these microorganisms are known as viral diseases. These diseases are different and diverse in nature as they are caused by a number of viruses. Among them, the common cold is the most known viral disease and occurs due to the infection of your upper respiratory tract, namely the nose and throat.

Other widespread viral infections are:

- chickenpox

- HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)

- HPV (human papillomavirus)

- shingles or herpes zoster (a viral infection that leads to the development of rash)

- viral pneumonia (a condition that occurs due to viruses that are responsible for flu and colds)

- viral hepatitis (inflammation of the liver that is caused by a virus)

- viral meningitis (viral infection wherein inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain occurs)

- rubella, mumps and measles

- herpes

How do they spread?

These diseases are infectious and can easily spread from one person to another. When the microorganism enters your body, it begins to reproduce.

The many different ways that they can spread include:

- breathing in the germs present in airborne droplets when an infected person sneezes or coughs

- coming in contact with the body fluids of an infected person during sexual activity

- indirect contact with these microorganisms when you touched inanimate objects handled by an infected person

- viral infections can also spread through insect bites. Certain germs depend on insects as carriers such as ticks and mosquitoes for moving from host to host

- having virus-contaminated water or food is another way in which viral infection can spread from person to person. Such a mode of transfer enables the virus to spread among a large number of people

My wife has saggy breasts. She is worried as she is only 24 (no child) and wants to know if this can be cured in anyway. Her height is 5ft and weight is 77 kg.

Sexologist, Narnaul
Dear,God has made undoubtedly ladies lovely. Ladies with a legitimately shaped and proportionate body are truly engaging. Women with low breast size use armored bras or silicon-stuffed bras, and some even put cotton, paper or silicon extensions into their bras? bonnets to look sexier and have bigger breasts shape. An undersized-breasts woman keeps feeling anxious and uncomfortable anytime she gets undressed by her partner. Adding to that, she loses self esteem and confidence and this brings even more stress into the couple.
