There are two types of mouth washes.
Therapeutic and cosmetic
Therapeutic mouth wash contains active ingredients to control or reduce bad breath, plaque, gingivitis and tooth decay. It should be diluted before use as prescribed by the dentist. And for limited period of time and avoid prolong use.
Cosmetic mouth wash temporarily control bad breath and leave behind a pleasent taste and have temporary effects.
Grinding or bruxism involves moving the jaw with teeth held tightly together.
This results in visible wear and flatenning of teeth.
Clenching is holding the teeth together and tightining the jaw muscles.
It may be done conciously or during sleep.
It may lead to jaw pain, stiffnes, enamel wearing, recession, clicking sound in the jaw joint etc.
Making patient aware of his situation
Bite guard or night guard is made to wear at night
Mouth ulcers are very unpleasent experience. They may occur due to stress, vitamin defficiency, trauma,Gastrointestinal disorder, Insufficient sleep.
Normal ulcer heals by themselves in 7-10 days.
Apply glycerin or any gel precribed by your doctor.
Reduce your stress level.
Take a proper diet
Seek doctors advice if ulcer does not heal for much longer or occurs more frequently
Tooth cleaning is performed by professional hygienist or dentist.A normal plaque can be removed with the help of tooth brush but tartar or calculus cannot be removed by normal brushing.
Professional tools are required to clean them, which might be getting accumulates on your tooth even below the gum level.Smoking and tobacoo stain can also be removed by getting scaling and polishing done.
Area of the tooth if left uncleaned and tarter is not removed may lead to more severe gum disease.
Teeth may be lost due to various reasons - decay, periodontal disease, age, trauma, etc. Whatever be the reason, losing a tooth causes many side effects, as noted below:
1. Reduced chewing efficiency, thereby affecting nutrition
2. Aesthetics, more effect if front teeth are lost
3. Structural support to the face - puckering can happen
4. Overall nutrition affected
For someone who has lost a tooth or teeth, dentures are a boon. There are various options for people, and choice can be made based on economic, cosmetic, and overall health conditions.
PARTIAL/ COMPLETE DENTURE: If only one or few teeth are being replaced, it is a partial denture. This can be fixed or removable. In case of old age or trauma where all teeth are lost, a complete denture would be in order. This can also be both fixed or removable denture.
FIXED/ REMOVABLE DENTURE: Depending on whether the denture is fixed in the mouth or can be removed when not in use.
METAL/ CERAMIC/ COMBINATION: In some cases, for aesthetic or economic reasons, the patient can decide to go for a metallic fixed partial denture. The fabricated crowns will have a metallic surface but it accepts good strength, so given especially in posterior teeth, which take a heavy mastication load.
In cases of front teeth loss, the prosthesis should almost always be a ceramic one, especially for cosmetic reasons. If the person cannot afford, a removable denture can be done.
The optimal denture should be chosen based on a number of factors including the functional and aesthetic expectations.
CARING FOR DENTURES: It depends on the types of dentures you choose.
Fixed dentures: This requires religious brushing, flossing or interdental brushing, and rinsing. The edges of the denture can put pressure on the gums and cause irritation, this needs to be watched for.
1. Clean the dentures after every meal
2. Be careful when handling them to avoid fall and breakage
3. Handle the clasps with care, altered clasps may not fit properly
4. Clean the bone and gums around the denture after each meal
5. Soak the dentures overnight in water or a denture-soaking solution
6. Avoid soaking it in hot water, can lead to warping of the denture plate
7. Avoid hard brushing of the dentures
With any denture in the mouth, visit the dentist regularly every 6 months to keep a constant vigil on your overall dental health. Ill-fitting dentures, especially, need to be corrected immediately as they can lead to irritation, ulcers, and even infections.
With these small precautions, the denture can function to its optimal level and serve as a good replacement of the lost tooth.
Tooth paste can be regular paste or medicated paste
Any type of regular cleaning tooth paste can be used, only the technique of brushing should be right
Medicated tooth paste
It contains fluoride depending on different concentration from 500-1000ppm and even some contains desensitizing agents to treat sensitivity.
Medicated tooth paste should not be used in children under 3years of age as they might swallow the paste and paste with 1000ppm concentration should be used under dentist guidance.
Medicated tooth paste should only be used under dentist guidance.
Spacing is a very common complication in upper front teeth.
Its treatment varies with it's cause and factors affecting spacing.
Treatment to correct adult spacing in teeth:
1. Orthodontic braces:
This is the most commonly preffered treatment where complete tooth movement is done
2. Composite bonding:
It is a cosmetic filling tooth colour material used to close small gap between the teeth.
3. Indirect veneers:
Many types of materials are used like porcelain and composite where minimal tooth cutting is required for the material to accomodate and close the space.
4. Crown and bridges:
It is a more invasive treatment where the space is more and other options cannot be indicated.
It begins when bacteria inflicts damage on the hard surface of the tooth and destruction will spread in the deeper layer if left unchecked. It happens when sugars aren't cleaned off your teeth, bacteria feeds on them and produces acid. Acids wear away the first layer of tooth (enamel) and spreads in more deeper layer eventually causing decay and cavity.
Composite cosmetic fillings is a synthetic combination of acrylic resin and glass which has a white colour thereby enabling it to match the colour of teeth. It has good results esthetically as compared to silver fillings.
