TSH can vary between early morning and evening values. Even in the normal range that varies among the laboratories higher normal value is 25 times the lower normal value. So please do not be bothered about these variations. Having said that it seems that you may need thyroid medication after thorough clinical evaluation by an Endocrinologist. You can meet DM Endocrinology doctor for the initial evaluation. The idea is to adjust the dose of medication that is best for you.

The need for levo-thyroxine (thyroxine) during pregnancy is increased so please go for early tests fT4 and TSH as soon as pregnancy is detected. Kindly consult the gynaec for present non-conception. Also get T4 and TSH on present state to ensure that the present dose is sufficient.

What are the effects of taking synthetic thyroxine? If it remains within the zone ,does it have bad effects?

What are the effects of taking synthetic thyroxine? If it remains within the zone ,does it have bad effects?
Synthetic thyroxine is given to supplement the endogenous thyroxine and does not have any side effects. Side effects from the other components in the medicine have been reported but are practically inconsequential in clinical practice.

My mother has thyroid problem. Due to this her neck was swelling and have itching to gulp anything. Her thyroid report reading as follows:- Thyroid Thyronine T3= 2.48 ng/ml (0.79-1.58 ng/ml) thyroxine T4=16.0 ug/ml (4.00-11.00 ug/ml) Thyroid Stimulating hormone Tsh=0.010 uIU/ml (0.28-5.00 uIU/ml) And doctor prescribed her TAB. Thyrocab So what will we do now this treatment is ok with the recent thyroid conditions or not please help me to get a proper treatment.

Kindly get an evaluation done by a DM Endocrinology person at the earliest. Low TSH can be due to either the gland that is function more which appears to be more likely in your mothers case. However, low TSH can also be due to leakage of thyroid hormones from the gland which is caused due to thyroiditis that is self limiting condition. Since both these conditions have different treatment it is always better to find the cause for low TSH before starting thyroid medicine. This is done by performing a Nuclear scan under supervision of an Endocrinologist. If nuclear scan shows that both the lobes of thyroid are functioning more then thyrocab treatment as has been given can be started and repeat blood tests be done after 6 weeks. Hope this helps.

For first 13 weeks of pregnancy fetus's thyroid is dependent on mother's thyroid function. It is good that you have started medication today and have also taken Endocrinologist's appointment. TSH will have to be monitored at short intervals to ensure that it is below 2.5 micro IU/ml. Continue the medication and follow Endocrinologist's instructions.

Kindly get your TSH levels after taking the medication regularly in the prescribed dose for a minimum period of 3 months. If the TSH is still raised you may need to increase the dose but all this has to be under supervision of expert in thyroid disease since these are hormones and minor alteration in their dose can have impact on overall metabolism of the body. As far as weight issue is there, people with hypothyroidism loose weight at the initiation of therapy since there is water loss from beneath the skin (body swelling becomes less). This may happen for around 6 weeks. Thereafter the weight stabilizes. Any further weight loss if desired is possible only with dietary modification and exercise. Hope this helps.

I am 43 years my thyroid TSH is 150 last year October but again I tested this year August TSH is 117 and I started treatment of tablet 75 mg for 45 days again tested a week back TSH 15 Now what can I do.

MBBS, DNB

Kindly repeat TSH only after 3 months of changing the dose and that too if you have been taking the medication regularly. If TSH has still not normalized then increase the dose of medication by 12.5 microgram and again repeat test after 3 months.

MBBS, DNB

You need to increase the dose of thyronorm since upper normal level of TSH during pregnancy is 2.5. Kindly do so under the supervision of the Endocrinologists. Beyond 12 weeks of pregnancy fetus's thyroid functions independent of mother's thyroid. So fetus is not likely to be harmed due to present dose that the patient is taking.

Hii I was with thyroid with tsh 9.81 and taking thyrox-50 but after 3 month now with tsh level is 1.94 ulU/ml so my qst is 1) please tell me now is this the suitable tsh level for pregnancy? 2) do I need to continue thyrox-50 or reduce to thyrox-25?

MBBS, DNB
Nuclear Medicine Physician, Mumbai
Kindly continue the same dose of levothyroxine. DONOT REDUCE THE DOSE. The requirement of medication would increase during pregnancy. Hence repeat the test when pregnancy is detected. Keep taking the medicine during the pregnancy especially during first 13 weeks when fetuses thyroid is yet to begin functioning and its need for levothyroxine are met through the mother. Regards.

A girl age 26 years have TSH value 79. 935 which is greater than normal TSH value 4.780, and T4 value is 0.59 which is less than normal T4 0.89, What that's means and what she do to make her TSH normal? Is she have to increase eating iodine chloride salt in food? Please suggest what to do.

MBBS, DNB
Nuclear Medicine Physician, Mumbai
These values of TSH and T4 imply that her thyroid is functioning less than normal. Therefore she has to be given thyroid hormone medication from outside to bring TSH within normal limits and to bring relief to her symptoms if any. Please note that increasing iodine or chloride will not help in her case. She will have to take thyroid medication for sure. Hope this helps.
