Hi, sore throat is usually accompanied by pain. Here are a few steps that you may follow in general to either cure or avoid getting sore throat. Try avoiding constipation at all costs. (a) healthy & balanced diet with focus on fresh fruits/ leafy greens. Avoid yellow banana. (b) consume flesh foods in moderation. (c) take plenty of water daily and stay hydrated. (d) regularize life style, reduce stress/ strain. (e) protect yourself from intense heat/ cold air. (f) do not take extremely hot/ cold/ spicy/ sour drinks as well as foods. (g) warm saline gargling 2 - 3 times daily. (h) gargle made of tulsi, cinnamon, turmeric or fenugreek seeds and honey are also beneficial. (i) avoid overcrowded places.

How Ear Problems Can Cause Dizziness

Fellowship In Head & Neck Oncosurger, MD - ENT , MBBS
ENT Specialist, Gurgaon
How Ear Problems Can Cause Dizziness

Dizziness or vertigo is a feeling of being off centre, which makes a patient feel like there is lack of balance. This is especially apparent when one is at a height or while wearing footwear with high heels. It may be caused due to a variety of causes, and ear problems are one of the primary causes of this kind of dizziness.

Let us take a look at the various ear problems and how they can cause dizziness or vertigo:

  1. Infection: The bacteria or virus that causes cold and loose motions can also cause an ear infection. This can give rise to temporary vertigo which may last up to six weeks or more. Dizziness or vertigo happens in such cases because the viral effect spreads to the inner ear which causes a ringing and off balance sensation. The general physician or ENT specialist will usually prescribe a round of medicines only if the condition becomes too severe to handle.
  2. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: This kind of dizziness is also known as BPPV and may be caused due to the motion of a calcium particle known as otolith, in the ear. This can cause a fluttering movement that gives the sensation of falling down or losing balance. This usually takes place in the part of the ear that catches the sensation of gravity. The movement of the otolith can make the patient feel as if his or her head is turning or swaying, while in reality the patient may be stationery. This problem can be fixed with the help of a two minute therapy known as Epley Manoeuvre, which can be conducted easily in the ENT specialist's clinic.
  3. Meniere's Disease: There is actually a specific condition that is characterised primarily by dizzy spells and vertigo. The other symptoms of this ear bone condition include ringing of the ears, loss of hearing, and the feeling of fullness or pressure build up in the ears. This can be fixed with therapy and drugs as well as hearing loss aids.
  4. Dandy's Syndrome: This is an ear condition where the patient constantly feels like he or she is bouncing up and down. This condition hits patients who are on antibiotic medication for any kind of infection, and it subsides once the medication is done with. It occurs in such cases because certain kinds of antibiotics may be toxic for the ear. One may also see natural improvement in the condition over the passage of time.
  5. Tumours: Other reasons like tumours and strokes can also cause vertigo on a temporary or permanent basis.

Dizziness due to ear problems can be due to a number of mild to severe reasons. It is best to get these causes checked.

1) I am 17 years old and a female. I have undergone laser tonsillectomy a week ago on 17. My doctor prescribed me ROMILAST L10 for 30 days. Is it necessary for me to use? 2) he has also advised me not to take ice creams for a life time and if I will not I'll catch the problem again as tonsils grow again. Is it true? If not until how many days should I resist eating ice creams.

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Kolkata
You should follow the instructions given by your treating physician. If your tosillar tissues are removed competely during operation then there are no chances of tonsils growing again and there is no contraindication of taking ice cream. After tonsillectomy we advise all our patients to take ice cream as their first oral diet.

I have had tinnitus age 45 in tamil nadu (sound in the ears) for 2 years now. Sound is different some time Ringing.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
Humming sound, whistling and giddiness are the problems which are getting in people are very commom thesse days, these get complicated when they are not taken care of at proper time whistling or buzzing in the ear is getting commoner these days in people of all ages. Most common causes is wax or any object in the ear, after getting your ears clean these gets over. But if ears are already clean than this is worrisome. Common causes which are responsible are high cholesterol diet, alcohol, smoking, loud noises, cervical spondylosis, trauma (self or inflicted) over the ears. If this is the situation than report to your ent doctor immediately tinnitus is basically due to hampered blood supply to ears due to which ears start dying. As this process starts a person starts hearing noises. When a person starts hearing noises then it is already late diagnosis as these noises gets heard by someone when they are of 40 db intensity, below that threshold these noises are not heard. So it is already to late and the damage has become permanent. Problem with these noises are that we can control at what level person goes to his specialist otherwise these noises keep on increasing and can give you headache frustration and depression. Now a days tinnitus maskers are available which help you to lead your life peacefully.

Known as glue ear, this affects children more than adults Infection of the ear canal outside the eardrum (otitis externa) A boil or infected hair follicle in the ear canal Eczema in the ear canal ( seborrhoeic dermatitis) Injury in the ear canal from objects poked inside, such as cotton buds or sharp objects Blockages in the ear from plugs of earwax or objects pushed in which have become stuck Throat infections (including tonsillitis) and colds Jaw pain, known as temperomandibular joint pain Dental abscess in the mouth or other tooth pain, such as wisdom teeth problems Trigeminal neuralgia or facial nerve pain

If you have problem in nose your ear problem can not be solved without treating this bcz ear and nose are interlinked. What problem do you have in nose? get a ct scan done and send the report only after that proper advise can be given.

Smoking definitely worsens throat problems. You should do warm salt water gargles thrice a day for your sore throat.
