BDS
Dentist
Ask Free Question
Cost depends upon condition of teeth.(approx. 7000 rs.) bleaching gel is used in this procedure. A specialized light or laser activates the gel and allows bleaching to happen faster. Whitening usually takes 30 to 90 minutes. You will need one to three appointments. The number will depend upon the method used, how severe your stains are and how white you want your teeth to be. Different types of stains respond differently to the treatment.

Dear Lybrate user, you might be facing this difficulty due to your jaw joint problem. (TMJ) Consult your dentist immediately to determine the exact cause. There might be some dislocation for which you'll be advised a soft diet for a few days alongwith mouth opening exercises. If it's painful, the dentist might advise some medicines too.

Do you want pearl like white teeth?

Generally people are worried about yellowish shade of their permanent teeth. Even parents complain that permanent teeth are yellower in shade than previous milk teeth of their child.

Actually milk teeth are called milk teeth because they have the refrective index (in lay language whiteness) equal to milk. So those teeth are milky white. But permanent teeth are yellower in shade always. And every person may have different shade of teeth.

Due to some causes like chromogenic bacteria, tea, coffee, tobbaco, food colours, fluorosis, enamel hypoplasia, dentinogenesis imperfecta, etc there may be discolouration of teeth. In that case you need to visit a dental surgeon. Otherwise slight yellow shade of natural teeth is no matter of worry. So do not get confused with television commercials claiming to provide you pearl like white teeth. Tooth colour shade is just like you skin tone. No toothpaste can change your teeth shade. If you want to get a lighter shade then go for bleaching after consulting your dentist.

Severe pain in last molar of upper jaw. What should I do?
Kindly get an x-ray done of the tooth having pain. May be you will have to get root canal treatment done followed by a crown or cap. But if is third molar then it is advisable to get it extracted. Till then you can take a pain killer like tab ketorol dt 2 tablets dissolved in water. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique.

There are several causes of tooth discoloration, including: foods/drinks. Coffee, tea, colas, wines, and certain fruits and vegetables (for example, apples and potatoes) can stain your teeth. Tobacco use. Smoking or chewing tobacco can stain teeth. Poor dental hygiene. Inadequate brushing and flossing. Here is home remedy for brighter teeth--- mix several teaspoons of baking soda with enough fresh lemon juice (or water) to make a paste. Wipe your teeth and any extra saliva off of them with a paper towel. Put a good amount of paste onto your toothbrush and apply. Leave the paste on for 1 minute, then rinse, so as to avoid the acid affecting enamel. If you are using just water you can leave it on for up to 3 minutes. For faster result you can go for teeth bleaching from dentist.

This condition is called gingivitis i. E infection of gums. This occurs because of improper brushing and flossing leading to deposits on the teeth and underneath the gums leading to bleeding of gums. You might have to undergo scaling to restore health of your gums. Consult the dentist for this. Brushing twice a day with the right technique and correct toothbrush i. E medium bristle and medium head sized tooth brush with pea sized toothpaste for effective cleaning followed by flossing. This will prevent the problem from happening in future.

Dental Implants or Dentures - What is Best Suitable for You?

Tooth loss occurs due to various reasons decay and infection, fracture, accidents, gum disease, to name a few. Tooth loss has a negative impact on various aspects facial appearance, chewing efficiency, and overall nutrition. The attempts to restore the lost tooth have led to various advancements from removable dentures to cast partial dentures to fixed dentures to implants.

Listed below are features (covering advantages and disadvantages) of both dentures (fixed and removable) and implants. While dentures can be complete or partial, implants are more often partial, of course can be used to replace multiple teeth. A detailed discussion with your dentist along with oral and radiographic examination will help in making a decision.

Removable Dentures:

Advantages:

Replaces tooth but more for cosmetic reasons than function.

Poor chewing efficiency.

Useful when multiple teeth are to be replaced, especially when no adjacent teeth are available for support.

If good bone support is not available, retention is an issue.

Not very healthy for the underlying jaw bone and adjacent gums.

Requires daily and routine maintenance.

Fixed Denture(s):

Also called as bridges, as the artificial replaced tooth is a bridge between two natural teeth.

Requires removal of sound tooth structure as abutment (support). This is the major disadvantage with fixed dentures, which promoted further work from the dentists, ending up with discovery of implants.

Promotes tooth decay in the adjacent teeth.

Good support, so retention is not an issue.

Not as harmful to the underlying jaw bone as removable denture.

Requires maintenance but not like the removable denture.

Expensive compared to removable dentures.

Replacing a bridge also means the adjacent healthy teeth are affected.

Implants:

Very good replacement alternative, replaces not just the crown structure but also the root structure.

An excellent option when the jaw bones and gums are extremely in good condition.

Almost natural restoration of both chewing efficiency and facial appearance, the person can eat almost anything.

Not as harmful on the gums like dentures.

Does not cause bone loss like dentures.

Can be used to replace single or multiple teeth, where multiple implants are placed and a bridge is placed over them.

The titanium screws that are used fuse with the jaw bone over a period of time.

The titanium is also biocompatible, thereby reducing chances of allergy.

Implants are expensive, and many insurance companies may not cover them.

If properly fabricated and maintained well, then it can last for decades.

The decision to go for a denture or for an implant should be decided based on a detailed evaluation of overall health and if required radiographic examination. Both dentures and implants have advantages and disadvantages, and the dentist will help make the right choice.
