Bad Breath - How Ayurveda Can Help You Treat it?

Bad breath, also known as halitosis medically, is a much bigger problem than just being a cause for social embarrassment. It could be a symptom of an underlying disorder in your body which when corrected, will result in bad breath being resolved as well. However, in most cases, halitosis or bad breath occurs due to gum and teeth problems or due to life style habits such as a bad diet. Ayurveda has cure for both the problems and offers specialized treatment as well as home remedies.

Some general tips to fight bad breath
Bad breath may occur due to a combination of bad diet or digestive problems as well as oral hygiene issues. Some of the common things to follow, which will reduce your bad breath, especially concerning oral hygiene, are mentioned below 
1. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after every meal as it helps clean food particles which may contribute to bad breath
2. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Dryness of the mouth can often cause bad breath
3. Brush your teeth, preferably at least twice daily and clean your tongue every time you brush your teeth
4. Avoid alcohol, smoking and excessive consumption of caffeine products
5. Use natural breath fresheners such as mint leaves and parsley
6. Don’t use breath mints, mouth fresheners or mouthwashes which have alcohol in them as they may further dry up your mouth, causing bad breath
7. Try and include more of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet as these will keep you hydrated and supply you with the necessary nutrients to keep your digestive system functional and thus reduce bad breath.

Ayurveda for bad breath
Some of the home remedies as well as specialized Ayurvedic medications that can effectively combat bad breath are mentioned below. However, if you have a persistent problem, it is best to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can help you with tailor made combinations specifically suited to your problem.

  1. Fenugreek or ‘methi’ and tea leaves: Methi is known to have many medicinal properties in Ayurveda. Boil methi leaves into a cup of tea and drink it once a day to see quick and lasting results.
  2. Cardamom seeds: This is a quick and effective remedy for bad breath, especially for social occasions. Chew on a few cardamom seeds after a smelly meal and it can definitely take care of your bad breath temporarily.
  3. Honey ginger and lemon combo: If your body has more ‘Kapha’ based symptoms, then this is a very good remedy. Mix equal amounts of honey with ginger juice and lemon juice and use that concoction to slowly gargle your mouth and then rinse.
  4. Some specialized medications: Certain special medications may be prescribed by your Ayurveda practitioner such as:
    • Kushtha, Nagarmotha, Cardamom, and licorice mixtures
    • Dashan Sanskar Churna which is a specially formulated charcoal powder meant for brushing
    • Special mixtures made from ingredients such as Manjishtha, Clove, Khadir, Cardamom, Betel nut, Black Pepper, Mayaphal, Kulinjan, Cumin seeds, Vidang, Bakul, and Camphor among others; either in the form of edible medication or in the form of mouthwashes.

Malocclusion refers to the general arrangement of teeth and the manner in which the lower and upper sets of teeth fit. In optimal conditions, the upper set of teeth should fit slightly over the lower set of teeth. Malocclusion is a condition wherein the teeth are improperly aligned. Often, malocclusion tends to be a hereditary condition. The symptoms that indicate the occurrence of malocclusion include:

  1. Abnormal teeth alignment.

  2. Irregular facial appearance.

  3. Discomfort or difficulty during chewing or biting.

  4. Mouth breathing (breathing using the mouth instead of the nose).

Malocclusion and Oral Health-

  1. Malocclusion, also known as bad bite, is capable of affecting your overall oral health. This is because crowded and crooked teeth tend to hinder the proper cleaning of the mouth. This leads to tooth decay, gum diseases and even tooth loss.

  2. Malocclusion has a negative impact on the maintenance of oral health. Studies showed individuals without malocclusion were able to maintain a better oral hygiene in comparison to those with the condition.

  3. The improper alignment of teeth makes it rather difficult for the brush to reach in certain parts of the teeth thereby failing to remove bacteria and germs from particular areas for an extended period of time. This results in bad breath.

  4. It also makes flossing difficult and it creates hindrance in the way of maintaining proper oral hygiene.

  5. The improper adjustment of teeth leads to gum decay owing to the faulty cleaning. It promotes the growth of harmful bacteria that leads to weakening of tooth and gums.

  6. Owing to the misalignment of teeth, chewing becomes difficult. This often goes to hamper and mar the way one speaks as well. Malocclusion also results in wearing off of the tooth enamel. kindly get scaling done and use mouth wash twice daily for 15 days. also notice that you are not constipated most of the times as this is also one of the reasons for bad breath. brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique to maintain your oral hygiene.

My rgtside molar teeth are aching very badly and I found that there is a wisdom teeth (angular) is drilling my next teeth to set his place. I was using a my dentist prescribed tablets as of now. And my dentist is suggesting me to remove the wisdom teeth, next to wisdom teeth and upper teeth. Is that really needed I feel that It will pain will automatically reduce once the teeth angle is fixed. Need all your suggestions doctor.

wisdom tooth If the wisdom tooth has erupted fully and in a proper position then we can save it by dental cement filling. If the cavity is deep and near or into the pulp then we can save it by root canal treatment. Ideally we should save natural tooth structure if its fits in above criterias. If the wisdom teeth has erupted in a such way that it's disturbing other tooth structures and we don't have any option left for saving it then only you should go for removal. The wisdom tooth usually causes pain because of its uneven position distrubing adjacent teeth and some times swelling of the tissues around the tooth causing pericoronitis ( i.e inflamation of the surrounding soft tissues ) causing pain. Wisdom tooth which is usually considered as an extra tooth having no role in mastication (i.e chewing of food) On other hand removal of wisdom tooth have much advantages rather than any disadvantage.. Retaining wisdom tooth some times results in food lodgement within and between adjacent tooth ,results in caries ( decay ) of the adjacent tooth. So for improper erupted wisdom tooth, removal is the only and best available option to the date. Which in turn also helps in preserving other tooth structures. Jay Swaminarayan.

Kindly get an x-ray done of the tooth having pain. May be you will have to get root canal treatment done followed by a crown or cap. Till then you can take a pain killer like tab ketorol dt 2 tablets dissolved in water. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique to maintain your oral hygiene.

Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need t. Rebagen 10, morning one tab & one at night for 5 days, along with c. Becosules 5 cap, for five days in the morning after meals. 1. Proper Brushing One of the easiest steps to do to help your teeth keep clean. When brushing your teeth, position the bristles at an angle of 45 degrees near the gum line. Both the gum line and the tooth surface should be in contact with the bristles. Brush the outer surfaces of the teeth using a back-and-forth, up-and-down motion, making sure to be done gently in order to avoid bleeding. To clean the inside surfaces of the teeth and gums, place the bristles at a 45-degree angle again and repeat the back-and-forth, up-and-down motion. Lastly, brush the surfaces of your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria, which might cause bad breath. Try to brush at least twice a day to prevent acid buildup from the breakdown of food by bacteria. However, if your work or activities prevent you from doing this, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water after eating to minimize the amount of food that would serve as substrate for the bacteria. 2. Flossing! We know, it’s a chore and alot of times forgetful after brushing if rushing out the door or heading to bed. However, flossing can help you remove food particles and other detrimental substances that brushing regularly cannot. Flossing allows you to reach deep between your teeth where the toothbrush bristles cannot reach or even mouthwash cannot wash away. We recommend flossing at least once a day. 3. Avoid Tobacco This will be a big favor to your teeth. One, it will save you from oral cancer and periodontal complications. Two, it will save you from the countless ill effects caused by the agents used to mask the smell of tobacco. For example, if you smoke a cigarette, you may use candies, tea or coffee to mask the smoky breath and odor. This doubles the amount of damage caused. 4. Limit Sodas, Coffee and Alcohol Although these beverages contain a high level of phosphorous, which is a necessary mineral for a healthy mouth, too much phosphorous can deplete the body’s level of calcium. This causes dental hygiene problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. Beverages containing additives such as corn syrup and food dye can make pearly white teeth appear dull and discolored. Therefore, it is best to choose beverages like milk, which helps strengthen teeth and build stronger enamel, giving you a healthy, beautiful smile and water which hydrates your body longer than sugary drinks. 5. Consume Calcium and other Vitamins that are good for the body You need plenty of calcium for your teeth. It is essential for the teeth as well as your bones. It is better to drink milk, fortified orange juice and to eat yogurt, broccoli, cheese, and other dairy products. You can also take a calcium supplement, taking different doses according to your age and necessity as per prescription. Calcium and Vitamin D are necessary for maintaining the health of gums and teeth. Vitamin B complex is also essential for the protection of gums and teeth from cracking and bleeding. Copper, zinc, iodine, iron and potassium are also required for maintaining healthy dental hygiene. 6. Visit Your Dentist You should visit your dentist at least twice a year to have a full hygiene treatment performed. Also at these appointments, a comprehensive exam is taken with x-rays to help detect and prevent future dental treatments from occurring. 7. Use Mouthwash along side brushing and flossing Mouthwash is not particularly necessary and not all mouthwashes are useful. Mouthwashes containing Listerine our chlorine dioxide are very helpful because they help to kill and maintain the bacteria in your mouth. It can help maintain good breath as well as help maintain strong teeth. Mouthwash cannot do all the work but if your are already brushing, flossing, visiting the dentist and eating well, mouthwash is the cherry on top that will make your dental health great. 8. Having a toothache or noticing other dental symptoms If you are having tooth and jaw pain make an appointment as soon as possible. Your dentist needs to diagnose the underlying cause and correct it before it turns into a greater problem. 9. Look at the Big Picture Everyone understands that you should take care of your teeth to avoid toothaches, maintain your looks and keep dental bills at bay. Many people, however, don’t understand how crucial oral health is to our total health picture. Tooth problems can lead to diabetes, heart disease, systemic infections, an inability to eat or speak properly and other maladies – some life-threatening. Crooked or crowded teeth can contribute to gum disease that can eventually lead to tooth loss. Straight teeth are no longer just for looks. 10. Clean your tongue Clean the surface of your tongue daily. By using a professional tongue cleaner you remove countless bacteria that otherwise live, particularly on the rougher top surface of your tongue. These can contribute to bad breath (halitosis) and negatively affect your dental health.

I m 50 years old man. My mouth is not open properly. Chewing tobacco products since many years. What can I do suffering this problem?

Due to smoking and tobaco chewing the soft tissues of oral cavity as well as muscles get stiff over the period of time, results in restricted mouth opening. These habits also leads to the disease of gums as well. The first and primary treatment starts with quitting the habit. Execise to be done at home: - take the bundle of wooden ice cream sticks and place it between upper and lower teeth in front region for 10-15 mins. - repeat the exercise 2-3 times a day. - gradually increase the number of sticks every day. - continue with this exercise till desired mouth opening is achieved. - patience is required as this exercise will take several weeks to achieve the desired mouth opening. - this exercise will be helpfull only when patient quits the habit of tobaco chewing or else this exercise will not help at all.

Your daughter is in mixed dentition stage and it is obvious that there will be irregularity her teeth this condition resolves by its own at 11 -12 years of age. But do not ignore the other possibilities as well and consult a dentist physically for proper diagnosis and treatment to avoid any further problems.
