Pollution - How it Has Increased the Risk of Cancer?

MBBS, MS- Surgery , M.Ch - Surgical Oncology , FIAGES
Oncologist, Delhi
Pollution - How it Has Increased the Risk of Cancer?

Cancer today is not as rare as it once was. Today, cancer affects the young and old alike. One of the reasons for this is the pollution in particular air and water pollution that we are exposed to on daily basis.
The air we breathe in today is a mixture of smoke, particulate matter and noxious gases that causes great harm to our bodies. Amongst these, particulate matter that is smaller than 2.5 millionths of a metre is the worst.

These particle matters are emitted into the air from car exhausts, industrial exhausts, coal fires, wood stoves etc. While the body’s natural defences help keep larger particle matter out of the system by sneezing or coughing it out, smaller particle matter enters the body easily. These then get trapped in the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Particle matter has in particular been linked to increasing number of lung cancer cases. Apart from lung cancer, coal tar particle matter has been linked to bladder cancer, soot to oesophageal cancer and benzene and other pesticides to leukaemia.

Radon is another source of air pollution that is emitted from the ground. In some cases, radon can also be emitted through the water. As this gas decays, it releases tiny particles that when inhaled bombard the lung cells with radiation that can cause radiation. Smoking can worsen this effect and increase a person’s risk of suffering from lung cancer. Both first-hand and second-hand smoking have also been linked to breast cancer. Apart from trying to reduce emissions to lower air pollution, it is also important to clean filets of air conditions, etc. regularly to lower indoor air pollution. Preventing the smoking of tobacco in public spaces can also help improve air quality.

All pollutants emitted by us eventually find their way into the water we drink. Even if you are not drinking contaminated water, merely, showering or swimming in contaminated water can make your body more vulnerable to the carcinogens in it. Common water pollutants include arsenic, hazardous waste, animal waste, radon, chemicals and asbestos. Drinking water with concentrated amounts of arsenic has been linked to cancer of the lungs, liver, kidney and bladder while the chlorine used to treat drinking water increases the risk of bladder and rectal cancer.

To reduce the risks of cancer caused by polluted water, it is essential to reduce disinfectant by products by keeping water treatment facilities updated and promote green chemistry and alternative assessments to reduce pollution as a whole. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an oncologist.

I have three fully impacted wisdom teeth. But they are not infected. From last 6 months I have jaw, throat, ear, tongue & tooth pains. Meanwhile I suffered from throat infection which was due to Enterobacter clocae. I have also reactive lymphnodes in neck. Can impacted wisdom teeth cause all such symptoms?

Certified Implantologist, BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
Hello lybrate-user, wisdom teeth do cause pain in and around teeth and this pain is often referred to jaw, throat and ear. If these wisdom teeth are always causing discomfort and aren't helpfull in biting or chewing food then I would suggest you to go for an intentional extraction of these teeth. I am sure you'll be much more comfortable after it.

I have a question. Self sex can developed ovarian cancer and abnormal menstruation.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
I have a question. Self sex can developed ovarian cancer and abnormal menstruation.
Self sex or masturbation cannot cause any ovarian cancer or abnormal menses sexual urge is a natural instinct. In such a scenario when one gets aroused its natural to go for masturbation. During masturbation one just releases the sexual urge in harmless manner. Menstrual cycle is not related to sexual urge so masturbation doesnot cause any change in the body and hence canot cause cancer or affect menses.

My age is 23 years. Height is 6 ft. Weight 76 kg. What are the blood test to detect pituitary cancer.

Diploma in Radio Therapy, MBBS
Oncologist, Chennai
Pituitary cancer is a systemic disease. That means the manifestation of the disease is more pronounced in the body than the actual cancer symptoms. There is no direct blood test to diagnose Pituitary cancer. A image guided biopsy is the one which can give a diagnosis. Pituitary gland being the main controller of hormones in the body, there is abnormal distribution of hormones. Hormonal studies for Growth hormone, Thyroid stimulating hormones and 24 hrs Urine Cortisol level can be assessed to know the status of hormone production from the Pituitary gland. You can consult me if you want to know more details.

What are the basic symptoms of blood cancer and treatment and control of the blood cancer? If any person is suffering from blood cancer at that time what type of food is suitable for him?

MS ( General Surgery)
Oncologist, Mandsaur
Symptoms of Blood cancer The list of signs and symptoms mentioned in various sources for Blood cancer includes the 22 symptoms listed below: •Fatigue •Malaise •Breathlessness •Weakness •Excessive or easy bruising •Bleeding gums or frequent nose bleeds •Recurrent infections or fever •Sweating at night •Weight loss •Anorexia •Lymph node (gland) enlargement •Lumps or abdominal distension due to enlarged abdominal organs •Abdominal pain •Bone pain •Back pain •Bone fractures from minimal trauma •Confusion •Delirium •Headaches •Visual disturbance •Fluid retention •Decreased urination Blood Cancer Prevention Even after a lot of research scientists are not able to find ways to prevent most types of blood cancer. There are no absolute risk factors identified for this cancer but the key is to reduce the known ones. Also, doing some of these simple things will boost your immunity and can reduce the risk to some extent. •Avoid exposure to radiations If possible avoid exposure to high doses of radiation as during the certain treatment procedures patients are often exposed to high intensity radiation which increases their odds of succumbing to blood cancer. •Avoid exposure to chemicals Avoid getting exposed to certain harmful chemicals such as pesticides, as this may add up to increased risk of blood cancer. If your occupation forces you to stay in touch with these chemicals you must take proper safety measures. Exposure to benzene can also increase the chances of this cancer. •Avoid smoking or tobacco in every form Cigarette or tobacco consumption is a huge risk factor for not only cancers but several other diseases and should be completely avoided. By following few healthy lifestyle habits given below one can reduce the chances of getting affected with any type of cancer. •Regular exercise Regular exercise is essential to keep the body healthy. If you exercise daily for 30 minutes there are less chances of getting affected to the blood cancer, but still there is no evidence which supports it. •Eat healthy Healthy food consumption helps you to fight against diseases. Increasing consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables that contain fibers and a lot of nutrients reduces the risk of blood cancer to some exten •Don't ignore the symptoms Be watchful of your body and the signals it gives to you, especially when you are being exposed to one or few risk factor of blood cancer. Always consult your doctor when any kind of signs related to the cancer is seen. By having regular health checkups the blood cancer detection can be done at early stages. To live healthy & happy, one must keep a check on the body’s functioning by going for regular health checkups. This helps in assessing risk factors and diagnosing diseases at an early stage, which will result in effective treatment and better management of the condition. Blood cancer treatment & therapy options Treatment for blood cancer depends on the type of cancer, your age, how fast the cancer is progressing, where the cancer has spread and other factors. Some common blood cancer treatments include: •Stem cell transplantation: A stem cell transplant infuses healthy blood-forming stem cells into the body. Stem cells can be collected from the bone marrow, circulating (peripheral) blood and umbilical cord blood. •Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is the use of anticancer drugs designed to interfere with and halt the growth of cancer cells in the body. Chemotherapy for blood cancer sometimes consists of giving several drugs together in a set regimen. It may also be given before a stem cell transplant. •Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy may be used to destroy cancer cells or to relieve pain or discomfort. It may also be given before a stem cell transplant.

How cancer occurs and how can we know that. What are the tips to identify and how we can cure that. Is there any cure for cancer?

Fellow Breast Surgery (MUHS), DNB (General Surgery), MBBS
Oncologist, Aurangabad
Cancer is a manufacturing defect when new cells are being formed. But this defect has a unique capacity to defy the body's immunity and multiply uncontrollably. When our body's systems are constantly renewing themselves after wear and tear by creating new cells, sometimes somethings go wrong and a defective cell is formed. Body's immunity identifies a bad cell and removes it. But when this step is skipped they keep on growing first locally in some organ and then by spreading through either lymph channels or blood stream. Based on whether the cells are growing at one place or have spread to other places the symptoms change. Locally it is either due to any lump / swelling of crores of cancer cells or due to intereference of these cells in the organ's function. For example cancer in liver cannot be easily felt from above as swelling, but it can cause symptoms like indigestion or jaundice due to interference in liver's function of helping digestion. A breast cancer on the other hand usually presents as a lump in breast or axilla. The best way a person can do, is to identify and respect all the symptoms they have, which persist or are unusual. Some good habits like breast self examination are useful in identifying a symptomless early stage cancer. Cure is a word which is used with a very high caution. Cancer is defined by two most important characteristics - metastasis i. E. Spreading to other places different than site/organ of origin, and recurrence. Few cancer cells usually remain dormant after completion of initial treatment and then re grow after some time. There are many reason and factors helping it or acting against it. So cure is a word usually not used in cancer. And that's why patients are kept on strict surveillance after treatment for 5-10 years. Experts in medical fraternity believe that a patient surviving for more than 5 years may be called cured. But there are many patients who recur with same disease even after 5 years, 10 years even more than that. The goal of treatment of cancer is to improve survival and give best quality of life possible to each patient. In medicine always is always wrong and never is never right.

I have pain near buttock n anal. But it feels like there is a tumor over there. When I touch it pain. I can feel the difference between both buttocks. What it could be. What type of doctor I should be concerned.in my precious query I did not mention anything about any kind of tumor. please help.

MBBS
General Surgeon, Hubli-Dharwad
Anal pain also known as proctalgia common causes:- 1.anal fissure-An anal fissure is a small tear in the skin of the anus that can be caused by passing a large or hard poo. Symptoms of an anal fissure can include: a severe, sharp pain when doing a poo a burning or gnawing pain that lasts several hours after doing a poo rectal bleeding – you may notice a small amount of blood on the toilet paper after you wipe Anal fissures can be very painful, but many heal on their own in a few weeks. Increasing the amount of fibre in your diet, drinking plenty of fluids and taking laxatives and over-the-counter painkillers can help. If the pain persists, you may need special ointment that relaxes the ring of muscle around your anus. Occasionally, surgery may be needed to help the fissure heal. 2.Haemorrhoids (piles) Haemorrhoids (piles) are swellings containing enlarged blood vessels that are found inside or around the bottom. They're often thought to be caused by straining on the toilet as a result of prolonged constipation. In many cases, haemorrhoids don't cause symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include: bleeding after doing a poo an itchy bottom feeling like there's a lump in or around your anus soreness and redness around your anus anal pain, if the blood supply to the haemorrhoid becomes blocked or interrupted – for example, by a blood clot The symptoms often pass after a few days. Increasing the amount of fibre in your diet, drinking plenty of fluids and taking laxatives and over-the-counter painkillers can help. If the blood supply to the haemorrhoid has been blocked by a clot, a simple procedure can be carried out to remove the clot under local anaesthetic (where the area is numbed). 3.Anal fistulas and abscesses An anal fistula is a small tunnel that develops between the end of the bowel and the skin near the anus. It's usually caused by an infection near the anus resulting in a collection of pus (an abscess). Symptoms of an anal fistula or abscess can include: a constant, throbbing pain that may be worse when you sit down skin irritation around the anus passing pus or blood when you poo swelling and redness around your anus a high temperature (fever) Your GP may prescribe antibiotics if an abscess is picked up early on. If it persists, it may need to be drained in hospital, possibly under general anaesthetic (while you're asleep). If a fistula develops, surgery will usually be needed because they rarely heal by themselves Less common causes of anal pain When to get medical advice Many common causes of anal pain will improve with simple self-care treatments, so you don't always need to see your GP. But it's a good idea to see your GP if: your pain is severe your pain doesn't improve after a few days you also experience rectal bleeding Don't feel embarrassed to see your GP – anal pain is a common problem that they're used to seeing. Your GP can try to work out what the problem is and give you treatment advice. They'll probably ask to see your bottom and may carry out a rectal examination (where they gently insert a gloved finger into your bottom) to check for any abnormalities. If the cause is not immediately obvious, they may refer you to a specialist for advice and further tests.

I smoke about 4-5 cigarettes per day. How much probability of having lung cancer.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
It's difficult to calculate the probability, there are some risk calculators available but it's actually difficult to exactly predict as there may be other confounding factors like pollution, environmental factors, occupational hazards, genetic factors. Smoking is not only related to lung cancer but it may lead to head and neck cancer, gastrointestinal, bladder etc.
