Hi sir Plsss tell me how to clear my lungs as I quit smoking. And what are the symptoms of bad condition lungs.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
First of all congratulations on quitting smoking. That itself is a great reward because a lot of damage can be reversed. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged on. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check-up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. The primary concern with smoking and the lungs is the possibility of cancer. Smoking and Respiratory Disease Smoking can cause lung disease by damaging your airways and the small air sacs (alveoli) found in your lungs. 1, 2 •Lung diseases caused by smoking include COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. 1, 2 •Cigarette smoking causes most cases of lung cancer. 1, 2 •If you have asthma, tobacco smoke can trigger an attack or make an attack worse. 1, 2 •Smokers are 12 to 13 times more likely to die from COPD than nonsmokers. 1 Lung Cancer Signs and Symptoms (Sourced from Medicinenet. Com) Lung cancer is the most common cancer in men and the fifth most common in women, even causing more cancer-related deaths in women than breast cancer. The incidence of lung cancer is strongly correlated with cigarette smoking, with about 90% of lung cancers arising as a result of tobacco use. Symptoms of lung cancer are varied dependent upon the exact location of the tumor and the extent of its spread. A person with lung cancer may have the following kinds of symptoms: •No symptoms - Up to 25% of people who get lung cancer do not have any symptoms when the cancer is found. In these cases the cancer is first discovered on a routine chest X-ray or computerized tomography (CT) scan performed for another reason. •Symptoms related to the cancer - The growth of the cancer and invasion of the lung and surroundings may lead to symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, and coughing up blood (hemoptysis). If the cancer has invaded nerves, it may cause shoulder pain that travels down the outside of the arm (called Pancoast syndrome) or paralysis of the nerves traveling to the vocal cords that leads to hoarseness. Invasion of the esophagus may lead to difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). If a large airway is obstructed, collapse of a portion of the lung may occur and cause infections (abscesses, pneumonia) in the obstructed area. •Symptoms related to metastasis (spread to other organs) - Lung cancer that has spread to the bones may produce excruciating pain at the sites of bone involvement. Cancer that has spread to the brain may cause a number of neurologic symptoms that may include blurred vision, headaches, seizures, confusion or altered thought processes, or symptoms of stroke. •Paraneoplastic symptoms - Lung cancers frequently are accompanied by so-called paraneoplastic syndromes that result from production of hormone-like substances by the tumor cells that are released into the blood. A common paraneoplastic syndrome associated with one type of lung cancer is the production of a hormone called adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) by the cancer cells, leading to over secretion of another hormone, cortisol, by the adrenal glands (Cushing's syndrome). •Nonspecific symptoms - Nonspecific symptoms seen with many cancers, including lung cancers, include weight loss, weakness, and fatigue. It is important always to consult a doctor if a person develops the symptoms associated with lung cancer, in particular: •A new persistent cough or worsening of an existing chronic cough •Blood in the sputum •Persistent bronchitis or repeated respiratory infections •Chest pain •Unexplained weight loss and/or fatigue •Breathing difficulties such as shortness of breath or wheezing.

Dear lybrate user, one of the major nutritional substance required for human body is carbohydrate. We take carbohydrate in the form of rice, wheat, sugar etc. The complex molecules of carbohydrate are broken down into simple glucose molecules during digestion & released in the blood stream to be absorbed by the muscle cells. Muscle cells utilise the glucose molecules to release energy by breaking down those glucose molecules. Insulin hormone plays a vital role in the absorption of the glucose molecules by the muscle cells. In abnormal conditions, either due to less production of insulin or due to resistance to insulin, the process of absorption of glucose by the muscles comes to a stand still. The glucose molecules remains in the bloodstream which results in the increase in the blood sugar level. The failure of utilisation of the glucose molecules by the muscle cells results in production of less energy than normal condition. This is externally manifested as the fatigue & tiredness of the patient. This excess amount of blood sugar compels the kidney to function more than normal level in order to excrete the blood sugar molecules through urine. As a result the patient suffers from frequent urination. This abnormal condition is clinically known as diabetes mellitus. Once a patient is diagnosed with diabetes he has to take regular medicine to keep his blood sugar level within normal limits. Take homoeopathic mother tincture gymnema sylvestra q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. Also you need to walk at least 1 hour daily without any interval. Also you need to take a low carbohydrate rich diet. Avoid rice, sweet dishes, fruits, cold drinks, fast foods, alcoholic beverages, potato etc.

Dear Lybrateuser, -Your friend could be having sinus bradycardia, a condition in which the resting heart rate is 60 or less than that -this disorder is due to problem with the electrical system of the heart, if the heart beats very slowly then it can not pump enough blood to meet the body's needs & sometimes it may become life threatening -his hypertension & depression also have to be treated as they are contributors in the condition.

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Heart Attack

MBBS, MD - Medicine, DM - Cardiology

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Heart Attack

A person usually gets a heart attack when there is a blockage in the arteries of the heart. This is an emergency situation that can result in a fatality or death if it is not treated immediately. Not all heart attacks will have a crushing pain in the chest right in the beginning, there are a number of symptoms that can show the slow progression of this attack over a few hours. So how do you know if you are having a heart attack, and what kind of treatment will be required? This article seeks to answer all your questions.

Discomfort in the Chest: The patient will usually feel like there is some pressure and squeezing in the chest or pain or even fullness right in the centre. This pain can come and go every few minutes and it should not be ignored.

Pain and Discomfort in other Parts of the Body: There may be some amount of pain and discomfort in other parts of the body including the arms, the jawline, back, neck, stomach and even the teeth. This pain can also travel down to the abdomen above umbilicus. In case there is persistent pain along with the chest discomfort, then a doctor must be contacted immediately.

Other Symptoms: When you feel breathless without any reason or medical cause, and also when you experience symptoms like anxiety, indigestion, vomiting, nausea, light headedness, dizzy spells and fatigue, you may be suffering from a heart attack.

Immediate Treatment: Once you begin to experience these symptoms along with chest discomfort and chest pain, it is imperative to call the emergency unit of the nearest hospital or get in touch with a cardiologist. Until then, you will need to lie down and chew aspirin if you are not allergic to the same. This is usually more efficient that swallowing.

Diagnosis of heart attack: Heart attack is diagnosed if patient has 2 criteria out of following 3-

  1. Pain or discomfort thought to be due to heart disease

  2. ECG suggestive of heart attack

  3. Elevated levels of cardiac enzymes (CK-MB and Troponin) in blood test (these levels start rising after 6 to 12 hours of heart attack)

Once you reach doctor an ECG should be done immediately along with blood pressure and pulse. If ECG shows heart attack then immediate action needs to be taken. Remember a normal first ECG does not rule out a heart attack. So a series of ECGs may be ordered by the doctor and at proper time blood test of cardiac enzymes may be done. Ruling out a heart attack may need an observation and testing up to 6 – 12 hours as cardiac enzyme test shows results only after that period.

EAT EVERYTHING FOR WEIGHT LOSS, JUST CONSIDER PORTION SIZE CONTROL

Portion Size Control – The Basics

“It’s not just a question of how healthy your food choices are that count when it comes to weight". “Often the quality of the food is okay, remember there is no ‘one’ bad food’ – however there are ‘bad’ quantities”.

“Portion Distortion is very common. Learning to recognise how much you body needs, and recognising when you’re full is important to successful long term weight loss”.
You should take a little time to familiarise yourself with different portion sizes. “Even just cutting out 15-20% of what you normally serve yourself will help enormously in weight management, and you’re unlikely to feel hungry if you snack on healthy choices and eat regularly.”

Portion Control Pointers

Portion control is essential for you to successfully manage your weight – for both maintaining and losing weight.

Ravenous hunger can (and usually does!) result in eating larger portions. Eating regular meals prevents ‘ravenous hunger’ and will help you control your portion sizes.

The average portion sizes have increased by 25-50% over the past 30 years e.g. crisp packs have increased from 25g to 35g – eat one of these bigger bags everyday and the extra calories equal a 2.5kg (5lb) weight gain over a year. With pre packed pasta and spaghetti the suggested servings are sometimes over a third more than the recommended portion size (not only does this hinder weight control – you’ll end up finishing the packet quicker and have to buy more of the product… strange that).

Don’t be seduced by quantity and avoid ‘going large’ or ‘super sizing’’. Although larger portions of chips, onion rings, cappuccinos etc may appear to offer good value for money, they offer poor value for health – you simply end up eating or drinking more calories, fat and sugar and this will lead to weight gain.

Don’t be tempted by meal deals, offered by many supermarkets and sandwich shops, unless they offer fruit or fruit desserts instead of crisps or cake.

Common Myth and Misconceptions

“It’s low in fat and so I can eat more”. This is a common mistake however it’s not true - just because the packet says ‘low fat’ does not mean the food is low in calories. Portion control is important for all foods, even those claiming to be low in fat or calories.

“Liquids don’t count”. Yes they do – and this is where it is easy to misjudge your intake of food portions. Some liquids can contain a significant number of calories – a large latte coffee, for instance, contains 212 calories; the skinny option contains 167cals – both would give you the same nutrition but the skinny version (especially if you had a smaller size) would help you manage your weight.

Tips and Tricks

-If you usually eat all of the food on your plate and never leave any, serve smaller portions and wait for a few minutes before going back for seconds.

-Fill half of your plate with vegetables or salad first, and then add the protein (e.g. meat, fish) and starch (e.g. potatoes, pasta) portions.

-Measure out salad dressings, mayonnaise and sauces in spoons – you will use less than if you simply pour them over.

-Drink a large glass of water with every meal – this is great for your digestion and will also help you to feel full.

-Always sit down to eat if you can - studies have shown that those who don’t watch TV whilst eating, eat less - so turn the TV off. Focusing on enjoying your meal will help you to stop eating when you are full – distractions will make it less likely that you will notice when you are full.
