Hello. On the face of it, all these behavioral changes are significant & concerning. They are pointing towards some addiction (alcohol, opium, heroin, smack, marijuana or similar which is evident from stealing money & behavioral changes) or onset of some form of mental illness (which is evident from senseless talks, aggressive behaviors) you should seek psychiatry consultation as soon as possible to help your father recover or you can revert back to me with a detailed description of his behaviors so I can help you further. Good luck.

Hi Lybrate user, Basically, Memory, is like muscular strength, requires you to “use it or lose it.” The more you work out your brain, the better you’ll be able to process and remember stuff. The best brain exercises break your routine and challenge you to use and develop new brain pathways. Following are the tips that will help you deal with memory issues- 1. Get on a regular sleep schedule 2. Avoid all screens for at least an hour before bed 3. Meditation 2 times a day will help you alot 4. Take breaks throughout the day 5. Set healthy a balance between work and leisure time 6. Focus on one task at a time, rather than trying to multi-task 7. Spend time with fun, playful people 8. Cut down on caffeine 9. Limit calories and saturated fat 10. Eat more fruit and vegetables 11. Get your omega-3s like- fish (salmon, tuna) 12. Eat dark chocolate and almonds Will help you boost memory Good Luck!

1. Take balanced diet with proper combination of carbohydrate, protein and fat. Avoid diet high in saturated fats like red meat, whole milk, butter, cheese, cream, ice cream etc which hampers memory and concentration. Take complex carbohydrates like whole wheat bread, brown rice, oat meal, high fiber cereals, lentils, whole beans etc. Avoid processed foods like pasta, potato etc 2. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables and fruits and drink green tea since they contain anti oxidants which enhance memory 3. Go for regular physical exercise like brisk walking, jogging, cycling etc for 30-45 minutes daily 4. Take some mental exercise like doing cross word puzzle, problem solving exercise, playing chess etc 5. Develop some new hobby and skill like learning music, dancing, playing new game etc 6. Take adequate rest. 7-8 hours of sound sleep in the night is required to remain healthy 7. Avoid alcoholic beverages, caffeinated drink, smoking and consumption of tobacco etc. 8. You get anxiety while performing in public. Practice yoga and meditation. Although you could technically consider yoga your daily exercise, practicing the deep stretches and slow body movements will help you to clear your mind. Meditating - clearing your mind - while practicing gentle yoga will give double the relaxation effect to ease your stress. Use guided imagery to imagine a place that makes you feel at peace. Imagine somewhere that you feel happy; focus on the details to fully remove your mind from the present. Do yoga alone or in a group setting to help you learn new poses. As you advance in your yoga, you will be able to form complex stretches that force you to focus and take your mind off your stress. Practice deep relaxation by doing progressive muscle relaxation. This is when you work through your body by tensing your muscles, holding the tension for ten seconds, and then releasing it. This will soften and relieve all the muscles in your body. Also, practice creative visualization when you have some task coming up. Creative visualization is a technique using your imagination to create and visualize scenarios in the mind’s eye. By using visualization techniques, you create a mental picture of something and then focus on this image or scenario for periods of time. The main belief with creative visualization is that by changing ones thoughts and perceptions, you can change the outer world. Many successful, wealthy and influential people in the world believe that by visualizing specific behaviors or scenarios, you can change energy patterns to bring your goals and desires to you more quickly. All the best.

Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. Memory and mind power depends mainly on three aspects. Understanding, storage and recollection. To understand what you are studying, you must be able to be attentive or concentrate. Concentration is possible when you are interested in that subject. Creative way of learning can help you concentrate and understand easily. When you are able to understand and concentrate, it is stored within your brain. If you read more and more it will be store in long term memory. Third part is retrieval. Whenever you want to retrive what you learned and stored, your brain gets the request, searches the database and retrieves the information for you. The retrieval may prove to be difficult if you are anxious, stressed, worried or tired physically or mentally. Retrieval is more easy when you are relaxed and healthy. Brain needs nutrients to keep itself sharp. Fruits, vegetables and dry fruits provide much needed nutrients for your brain. Include at least one fruit in your daily diet. Physical exercises, entertainment, hobbies, relaxation, memory games like sudoku etc help keep your memory sharp and active. Take care.

I am now of 18 years. I was just of 6 years when I saw a girl. She joined our school when I was 6.Gradually and gradually started liking her. I felt very nervous whenever I used to talk with her. She was in my section till class IIV (age 13. Till then I used to talk very less with her. Now I am 18, I am unable to talk with her from class IIV. She came to know about me liking her by some of her friends but I was unaware of that fact. One day one of my close friend told her about my liking. She said that she had a crush. This incident happened last July on her birthday. I offered her a gift which she refused. I behave strangely in front of her. Only 7 months are left for my school life to be over. If any of her female friends enter my section I behave strangely. I have memorised her residential address, car's number plate, phone number. Whenever she enters our section to gossip with her friends of our section, I leave the room and go to portico and stand there alone. She is very good in academics while I am not. Written a lot! Please tell me the solution. I will turn insane. I am completely obsessed with her! Please tell me what to do and what not.

DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
First of all, you will not turn insane! It is very normal for people to like others the way you like her. Your obsession is called 'infatuation' This is the 2nd stage in a relationship. 1st being a 'crush' Now it is up to you to go to the next stage or not. The 3rd stage is called 'dating' If you ask her out, as in let her know that you like her and you would like to know her better, and she shares your feelings, then we can say that you are dating her. After a few months of dating, people may or may not fall in love with each other. Do not confuse your current feelings with love! Anyway, the best way to go about it is tell her your feelings. No body minds being liked. At worst, she may say no. It would hurt but remember that she has a right to say no. Respect that. Give yourself some time and move on. At best, she may like you too! I don't know what she is thinking. The best way to find out is to ask her. All the best!

How to concentrate on studies? I want to study till late night. But then I am not able to wake up early.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Please do not disturb your sleep for your studies. It will have a negative affect on your concentration. I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid junk food.
