Relax dear Lybrate user. I can understand the intensity of pain caused by losing a loved one. In your case I think it is the ego clash between you and your boyfriend is playing a vital role. I mean you are not willing to breakup the relationship with him unconsciously but due some superficial and tiny matters you have agreed to lose his relationship consciously. This state of mind may lead you to depression. My suggestion is "BE IN THE MIDDLE" I mean maintain a healthy relationship with him, not so deep and not so far. Never give up a relationship all of a sudden. Keep in touch with him until you get a new one. Who knows the same person may be having the same state of mind as you are in.

I lost somebody close last year and since then feel very depressed and prefer keeping to myself all the time. Please ...
Losing someone very close is a very traumatic experience. It takes time to first understand and accept that your beloved person is no more going to be with you hereafter. And this becomes a source of lot of pain and sadness. A void is created because of this loss. You must be very attached to this person. Along with this you might have been physically, emotionally, and socially dependent on this person for certain things. Now that this person is no more in your life, it has created uncertainty and insecurity for you. Hence you are feeling depressed and are trying to avoid others and are mainly keeping to yourself. It appears that you have lost interest in life. Please understand the pain and allow yourself to" feel" this pain. Then try to express your feelings by sharing it with someone you trust or just cry if you feel like crying. By doing this you are giving a outlet to your feelings. Emotional wound is to be treated like a physical wound. When a physically wounded person undergoes dressing and draining the pus out of the physical wound, he/she has to bear lot of pain till the wound starts healing. But the person cannot say I will not get dressing done for my wound, because if he/she does so the wound will become worse and create further complications. Same is the case with emotional wounds. You will be able to heal this wound by talking to someone or crying. And it will take you some time before you start thinking rationally. Otherwise you might start feeling dysfunctional and/or inadequate. Please don't force yourself to distract or don't try to push away the memories, instead, understand the loss by experiencing the pain. This process is painful, but finally it will help you to function normally in future and move on and reinvest in your life again. Please take care of yourself.

At your age the hormones are goading this drive and most of your mind and time will be occupied with this indulgence. You have to refrain from these habits and addiction by conscious effort.Masturbation is not really bad; it is the addiction to it that is bad. Not even the number of years is a problem but the frequency and compulsiveness to do it is to be considered for its ill-effects. At your age you may feel it difficult and it can become addictive if you have alone time, if you obsess about it, and if you are not into relationships. The problem with addiction to this is that you may go on to prefer masturbation to heterosexual contact, even when you are married. That obviously would be an insult to your wife and will lead to a lot of conflict. Heterosexual contact is very wholesome and the physiology is made exactly for penile and vaginal contact. You will instead enjoy a poor replica of this and not know or care for the difference. The second thing that can happen with addiction is that it will become compulsive and will have no boundaries or limits, since it can be done all by yourself, whenever, wherever, and however too. The big problem a lot of children get into is the guilt around this. A useful way to discharge the energy is to get into contact games, or exercises, or even hobbies to channelize it. Also you should not spend too much time alone, and you need to keep your mind occupied with other interesting things and a lot of socializing. Even if you are not interested in marriage, for whatever reasons, it will help you to get into a friendship with a girl and enjoy the relationship where there will be a lot of excitement when you fall in love. Right now your hormones may be very active and your physiological apparatus is primed and ready for sexual stimulation. But because of your age and even otherwise it is important to develop good control and not feed into your impulses. Keeping yourself occupied and living a healthy social life are the keys to manage your sexual drives.

Dear lybrate-user, The shaking can also be due to basic nervousness. But the major concern i.e. The frequency of his masturbation can lead to grave problems like Erectile Dysfunction or Premature Ejaculation in future. If you test results are fine, please consult the doctor for any general weakness.

Chronic stress is a side product of our life style these days. Try following things to learn relaxation response which leads to better coping mechanism on a daily basis. To begin with doing guided progressive muscular relaxation before sleeping will help you relax. You could google and download an audio file. I would also suggest you to take a multiple small break to take 3 nice and deep breath while keeping your eyes closed. You could do this while sitting or standing or while even walking or climbing stairs (keep your eyes open in that case). When you take a nice and deep break there is actual physiological change in your body. This will help you to activate parasympathetic nervous system which promotes relaxation and helps you calm down and think more clearly. This will also actually improve your performance in your work. Along with this exercise is one of the best way to relieve stress and stay fit. Engage in any kind of physical activity at least 4 times a week. This also helps in stress reduction. Along with this some relaxation exercises as well as engaging in joyful activities such as music, singing, dancing, reading, being in nature, gardening, talking with friends or anything which you enjoy will help reducing stress and rejuvenation of your mind and body. Have good routine for sleep and eating. Lot of research has now proven that sugar is very harmful for our health. Reduce sugar and refined white flour in your diet as much as you could. Along with this also increase consumption of raw vegetables in the form of salad in both the meals of your day. Hope this helps.

How do I identify a person with depression problems, since I am working with students, disinterest in academic activities is one, apart from this the complex they have when they come from a rural back ground to city with so called in vogue things around etc.

How do I identify a person with depression problems, since I am working with students, disinterest in academic activi...
A typically depressed person will have following symptoms: 1. Loss of interest in daily routine activities. 2. Too much sleep or not able to sleep, not eating. 3 not bothered about personal hygiene 4. Not talking to anyone, not expressing feelings. 5. Avoid interaction with others. 6. Keep crying on and off 7. No facial expression, emotional numbness 8. Talking about worthlessness, expressing wish to commit suicide. 9 feeling totally hopeless, not able to enjoy life. If you identify anyone with above mentioned symptoms, please try to talk to that student, listen to him with empathy. Ask his friends to be with him/her, if the student is talking about suicide. Please make them aware that since they are coming from different place and background, they will be different. But they need not be ashamed of it. If they wish they can learn some etiquettes, dialect etc which is more acceptable in urban areas. They need to give themselves some time to come at par with their urban counterparts. Please help them to focus on their strengths by asking them to write if down on a paper and ask them to read it every day. Also help them to learn spoken english, if possible train them for public speaking etc. It will boost their self confidence. I am very happy to see your commitment towards your students. Wish you good luck.

Pranayam and meditation helps a lot. As a first step do intestinal cleansing and start eating satvic food (less stimulant food). This will control. If you orally take gotu kola/ mandookparni and pearl calcined combos, this will show wonders to control your anger. Pl consult online for any query.

Frequent Moodswings - Know The Reasons Behind It!

Frequent Moodswings - Know The Reasons Behind It!

Cyclothymia is a type of a mood disorder which is relatively light or mild in nature. If you are suffering from this condition, then you will experience extreme mood swings for very short periods of time. During these mood swings, you may experience a low period (depressed mood) or a high period when you are extremely happy.

Identification
There is no set or structured pattern for the highs and lows that you will experience during this condition. This feature of the disease makes it more difficult to detect and diagnose. The duration of your mood swings usually last just for a few days but can also be extended up to a few weeks. So, the only sign of identifying this medical condition is that if you are not having a normal mood for an extended period of time then you should consult a specialist doctor to enquire more about the condition.

Symptoms
Though there are no special symptoms of this disorder, the usual signs of mild depression and hypomania can be a possible symptom of Cyclothymia.

Some of them are:

  1. Hypomanic symptoms
  2. Racing thoughts
  3. Minimal sleep
  4. Excessive talking
  5. Extreme optimism
  6. Raised self-esteem
  7. Being happy without any reason

Depressive symptoms

  1. Hopelessness
  2. Unnecessary fear
  3. Restlessness
  4. Fatigue
  5. Concentration difficulties
  6. Abnormal weight changes

Remedy
The mood swings that you experience during this situation do not get better with time or vanish automatically. So it is always desirable that you seek some medical assistance from a specialist doctor on seeing the symptoms of either hypomania or depression.

Complications
This does not always hold true but you might also start to experience suicidal thoughts if you also have a bipolar I or II disorder along with cyclothymia. So, if any such thoughts appear in your mind, then you should seek immediate medical assistance.

I tend to forget things fast, earlier I was having sharp memory, what you would suggest?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrateuser. Memory and mind power depends on three important factors. They are understanding, retention and recollection. Your brain stores information according what you perceive and it also depends on past experience. Understanding is the key. The more better understand, the more better will be the storage and retention. Once the brain retain it properly and stores in someplace where it can be retrieved easily, the more easy for it to recollect. So the basic step in remembrance is understanding. Make sure you understand whatever you study. There are" effective learning techniques" to help you. Physical exercise, outdoor games, indoor games, entertainment, hobbies etc also play an important part in improving brain power. Include green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts etc in your daily diet. Make sure to play brain games like sudoku atleast once in a week. All the above, together, contributes to keep your brain sharp and healthy. Take care.

I had an accident last year. I can't get out of the trauma. I get afraid if I board a bus. Please help.
Dear lybrate user. I can understand. The condition you are troubled with is called anxiety neurosis. Anxiety neurosis treatment consists of cognitive behavioral therapy, life style changes, relaxation therapy and meditation. Once you learn how to manage your anxiety yourself with the help of the above treatment methods, you will be cured and you can stop the medicines if any. The process could take some time according to the depth of the problem and the circumstances at which the patient lives. Anyhow, there is nothing to worry. Most of the psychological problems can be cured with scientific therapy methods. Take care.

Mental Illness - Treatment Options for it!

M.D Psychiatry , DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Mental Illness - Treatment Options for it!

Mental illnesses refer to an extended range of health disorders related to the mental condition of an individual, which affect the health, mood and behavior of that person. Depression and anxiety, eating disorders, addictive behaviors, schizophrenia, etc. are the different types of mental illnesses. Mental illnesses can create a lot of trouble in the normal functioning of the day-to-day activities of a person's life.

Here are some of the common treatment options available for relieving mental illnesses.

  1. Medications:  Antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, mood-stabilizing medications, antipsychotic medications are some general types of psychiatric medications prescribed by the doctor, which can be consumed depending on the condition one is going through. Although these medications do not cure the person completely, it helps in improving the condition.
  2. Psychotherapy: This type of therapy involves talking to a mental health provider about your condition and other related issues. In other words, it is also called talk therapy. It helps a person to cope up with his/her stress. The duration of such a treatment varies. It may either take a few months or even longer, if required. This therapy can be carried out in a group, with family members or even face to face with the therapist.
  3. Brain stimulation treatments: When the medications and psychotherapies fail to work in treating mental illness, this treatment is applied. It involves procedures such as electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation and vagus nerve stimulation.
  4. Hospital and residential treatment programs: In extreme cases of mental illness when a person becomes a threat to himself/herself, it is recommended that he/she be hospitalized to a psychiatric hospital.
  5. Substance abuse treatments: Substance abuse and mental illness go hand in hand. It worsens the condition of mental illness in an individual, if he/she cannot restrict the consumption of alcohol or drugs. In such circumstances, an individual needs to talk to the doctor regarding the treatment options for stopping substance abuse. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.
