The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks consult a psychiatrist and get evaluated.

Understanding Depression

Ph. D - Psychology
Psychologist
Ask Free Question
Depression is relatively common among adults, with 14.8 million people — 6.7 percent of the adult population — experiencing a major depressive disorder in any given year. Both men and women can have depression, but it is more common among women.

People who are depressed experience sadness or loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed. While just about everyone experiences these feelings every once in a while, people who are depressed have these feelings on an ongoing basis, and the symptoms of depression affect how they function in daily life.

Understanding the Causes of Depression

A number of factors are thought to contribute to the development of depression, including:

- Genetics. Depression tends to run in families, so researchers believe that certain genes may be associated with developing it.
- Brain abnormalities. Scientists have found that people who are depressed have certain brain characteristics that are different from people who are not depressed. Imbalances of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine, which are brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, are thought to be involved with the development of depression.
- Stressful situations. Stressful events, such as the loss of a loved one, a major life change, or a serious illness, have been known to trigger depression. While some people have normal and temporary feelings of sadness and loss after a stressful event, others will experience clinical depression.
- Gender. Because depression affects women more than men — at least two times more often — depression in women could be related to gender-specific factors, like menstrual cycles and pregnancy, or differences in how women and men react to stressful situations.

Understanding the Types of Depression

Major depression is a serious mental illness in which a person experiences multiple depressive symptoms for at least two weeks. Other types of depression include:

- Bipolar disorder, alternating episodes of emotional "highs" (mania) and "lows" (depression).
- Dysthymia, mild depression symptoms that last two years or longer.
- Postpartum depression, a type of depression that occurs in the mother after her baby is born.
- Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a major depression that occurs during seasons with low sunlight.

People with depression often have other physical or mental illnesses such as:

Anxiety disorders
Alcohol and/or substance abuse or dependence
Heart disease
Stroke
Cancer
HIV/AIDS
Diabetes
Parkinson's disease
Having depression makes these other serious illnesses more difficult to treat, and increases the risk of dying from these other conditions.

Seeking Help for Depression

Depression is a serious illness that should be treated by medical professionals. Whether your case of depression is severe or mild, treatment can help.

If you are experiencing persistent problems associated with depression, talk with your family doctor. Primary care physicians write more prescriptions for antidepressants than other health care professionals.

Your doctor can discuss your symptoms with you, rule out other medical conditions, or refer you to a mental health professional. There are several treatments, including medications, psychotherapy, light therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy, that are very effective for depression.

The first step is the most important: getting help to get better.

If you are heading toward a depression, identify the time and the reason that provoked the situation. Any which way take these measures to lighten the effect or to prevent it: Keep physically fit, emotionally fit, mentally fit, spiritually fit, and socially fit. Keep yourself cheerful by being with happy people. Do good exercise, talk to and develop close friends, eat a lot of fiber foods especially whole grains, nut, fruits and vegetables, learn relaxation exercises, and learn to be composed in tough situations. Learn to be decisive, and do not procrastinate. Pray and worship God in faith. Live life on the basis of good principles. Wake up early but sleep well. Be active in your social life. Expose yourself to sunlight at least 30 minutes a day. Learn to tackle stress by being disciplined in life. Do not be disappointed with failures but learn from them. Meet with a counselor too. If symptoms persist, do visit a psychiatrist for medical intervention.

I am suffering from fever in Two days, and pain in my body.
Now what I can do for myself.
Please take rhus tox 200 - thrice daily for next 3-4 days. Also -- soak a washcloth in cool tap water wring out the excess water and then sponge areas like your armpits, feet, hands and groin to reduce the temperature. Also, you can place cold, damp washcloths on your forehead and the back of your neck. The cloth pieces should be changed regularly after a few minutes. This remedy is beneficial when dealing with a high fever as it helps keep temperature under control. You can also take a bath in lukewarm water to relax your body. Taking a shower, however, may not be a good idea. Plus, needless to say, take as much rest as possible as it helps the body fight the illness. Note: do not use very cold water as it may cause the internal body temperature to increase.

She is going through an anger-related depression and you will need to be very patient and caring towards her. She must immediately meet with a counselor and seek professional help. It is not to her good to avoid people anyway and must be involved in social activities as much as possible. She may refuse but you must insist and make her involved. In the meantime let her do the following sincerely because at her age she could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest she does the opposite of what this depression makes her feel like doing (actually, not doing): she will need to fight this condition. She must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose herself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, she needs to incorporate these three important adaptations in her life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If she did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Have her pray and have faith in God to alleviate her sufferings. She should not wait for others to help, eventually. She should use her own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but if she perseveres she will win this battle. Above all she should be really happy; she needs to live in love and for love: you need to love her and have her love you back. If she loves herself adequately, she will never do harm to herself. Let her be positive always and learn to do everything possible to invest into herself. Life is extremely precious and because the depression, which is a mood disorder, makes her feel like giving up she must still persevere. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get her out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate her, all the hard word must come from her, and her cooperation with that person is very critical for her success. She can do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

He needs to go for a comp[elte medical checkup, which the doctor will prescribe. Anyway, it does not matter what the results show. He just needs to quit this very bad habit, immediately. To enable this ask him to follow some of these remedies: You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting a reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged on. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check-up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact, these conditions can exist all through the day, unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heartbeat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact, it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chew gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. At least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. You could also join twitter2quit program and enjoy its success to give up smoking.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Well, it may not be oral cancer yet. I would advise that you get this clinically examined by an experienced dentist. If in doubt still, you can always connect with a head and neck oncologist for 2nd opinion. Additionally, please continue with your good habit of staying away from tobacco products. Streamline your diet and lifestyle, and maintain a good oral hygiene. You can take green tea, twice daily. Hope this helps. You can connect for a suitable naturopathic traction should it require anytime. Do take care and all the very best. Sincerely.

My advice is that you meet with a doctor to determine whether you are depressed or not. You cannot be completely right by studying all the symptoms. Even if you were accurate, you should have sought some p[rofessional help for all these years. I will suggest a few symptoms and even after that you must visit a professional to know for sure and find some therapy to help you. What Are Symptoms of Depression? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, symptoms of depression may include the following: •Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions •Fatigue and decreased energy •Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness •Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism •Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping •Irritability, restlessness •Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex •Overeating or appetite loss •Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment •Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings •Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts.

Masturbation is a very healthy form of sexual outlet, do not feel guilty about it. Nearly 99% of men and more than 60% of women masturbate. It starts from adolescence and goes on in some people even till death. The pleasure (orgasm) from masturbation is said to be unique from sexual intercourse. In men, most of the liquid contains only water and some fructose and hormones. Hence it does not drain your energy. Many equate masturbation/ seminal fluid loss to lack of energy, impotency and so on. Many quacks, religious heads and pseudo healers also propagate the idea that masturbation is a disorder/ and wrongful behavior and instil fear on the mind of innocent men and women (we can see posters in train and bus stand, offering help for this behavior). Consult a psychiatrist, if you have excessive masturbation guilt or compulsive masturbation. Compulsive masturbation is when a person continues with frequent masturbation neglecting his/ her other work like education, job or social obligations. In fact masturbation reduces the sexual tension and helps focus on task at hand better.

What you are discribing are symptoms of obsessive cumplesive disorder. It is caused by a complex interaction of genetics, environment, personality, and stressors. As you have observed the symptoms recently, I would suggest you to co silt a physician at your earliest. In your case it is very much likely thst you would be able to co troll the symptoms and lead a normal. Life again. The two main treatments for ocd are psychotherapy and medications. Often, treatment is most effective with a combination of these. Exposure and response prevention (erp) therapy is one of the most effective treatment. This therapy involves gradually exposing you to your fear and having you learn healthy ways to cope with your anxiety. Exposure therapy takes effort and practice, but you may enjoy a better quality of life once you learn to manage your obsessions and compulsions. Therapy may take place in individual, family or group sessions.

Inability to interact with people the way it is expected is a sign of social anxiety and phobia. Also it tends to make you more reluctant every time to interact with people due to loss of confidence and self esteem. Social anxiety or phobia can be completely treated with use of counselling, behaviour therapies and medications if required.
