Open Heart Surgery - What Should You Expect?

MBBS, MD , DM Cardiology

Open Heart Surgery - What Should You Expect?

One of the crucial types of surgery is the heart surgery, which is commonly known as the bypass. It is a type of surgery in which the chest is cut, and surgery is done on valves, muscles, and heart arteries. As per the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, it is one of the most common types of surgeries, which is performed on adults. During this surgery, the prime focus is to remove the blockage from the heart so that fresh blood can easily flow into the heart. No doubt that this process is critical, but it is easily true that after the surgery you have to take extra care of yourself.

Talking of which, here are certain things that you can expect after the surgery.

  1. Moved To ICU: The moment, the surgery is done, you will be moved to the Intensive Care Unit where the person’s health conditions will be monitored, vital signs will be checked, and medical professional will frequently visit to make sure that the patient is just doing fine. Once the surgery is over, you may not wake up quickly, but you will continue to breathe through the breathing tube. About food, of course, you will not be allowed to take solid food, but there is an intravenous (IV) needle will be put in a blood vessel in your chest and arm from which you will be given fluids.
  2. Recovery At Home: Once you are given the discharge, your focus should be to get recovered quickly. Recovery at home entirely depends on the heart problem for which the surgery was done. Of course, the doctor will give you necessary instructions with regards to healing incision, dealing with after effect is and understanding the signs of complications. Follow up the medicines and attend the appointments as advised to keep track of your health condition. You may face some after effects such as appetite loss, constipation and sleeping problem. If there is any complication, make sure you speak with a doctor about the same immediately.
  3. Ongoing Care Is Important Too: Once the surgery is over, as said, you will have to go for frequent checkup with your doctor. During these visits, your doctor will tell you to get blood, stress test and electrocardiogram done, which will assess the working condition of the heart. You might also be given few blood-thinning medicine and bring certain changes in lifestyle and medicine.

There are certain phases of recovery which will take time eventually. The first phase is the lengthy one that can last for around 6-8 weeks. Once you get a discharge from the hospital, you will be given instructions that you must follow with good care. This will pace up the healing process and make the process better.

repeat your blood tests lipid profile.and consult again. High cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain.garlic,. One at a time.1) Malaria is a fever and parasite causing it is transmitted through bite of mosquito, there is No human to human transmission. Diabetes is abnormally high levels of sugar in the blood , extra sugar comes out of body through urine and damages the kidneys and other organs including heart and blood vessels. DM is of 3 types , juvenile or type 1- young are affected, Type 2 , elders are affected 3) gestational-pregnant women are affected. Diabetes is due to less insulin produced by an organ called pancreas in the abdomen. Type 1 & 3 are controlled by injections of Insulin only ,All 3 require diet therapy along with medicines . Your 3rd query is about heart attack blockage in artery due to cholesterol something ?? Yes high levels of cholesterol are responsible for causing blockages in blood vessels but this is One of the important causes. Rest of the causes - get back here with your doubts .

Your chronic problems are under control and doctor has suggested some eye drops for cataract which is developing and you do not want to get operated as you have no difficulty in seeing. Why do you worry about some cataract which is just developing but not giving you any visual problems? do get your eyes examined frequently for assessment of dm & bp.

The problem is known as tachyarrythmia. It can be dangerous. First you need to identify the type of tachyarrythmia. Get a holter monitoring or elr (extended holter) done. Usually it is identified by them. If not then you may require a mini eps study to know the cause. The treatment depends upon the diagnosis. Consult with your physician /cardiologist.

Hello lybrate-user ji the problem of your cough originating from the chest is mainly related to your habit of smoking the condition in medical language is called as smokers lungs and it is sometimes troublesome and to producing such symptoms and discomfort it is very easy to say that you would like to leave the habit of smoking and alcohol but it needs lot of courage and commitment with self control. Do You Know a Flu Shot Can Prevent a Heart Attack?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Do You Know a Flu Shot Can Prevent a Heart Attack?

A flu shot can prevent a heart attack! Here’s how.

Every year, heart diseases become a major reason of death all over the world.  But did you know that a simple vaccine like a flu shot can be instrumental in saving you from a heart attack?

Read on to find how this simple vaccine can save your life...

Influenza or flu has been linked with heart diseases for long and patients suffering from these diseases are always advised to be cautious in the flu season to reduce the risk of heart attacks. The ‘Journal of the American Medical Association’ recently published a study, which revealed that people who have already observed symptoms of heart diseases in them, can diminish their chances of getting a heart attack and stroke by opting to get a flu shot. Among the 6735 participants of the study, 50% were given flu shots. The results observed declared that there was 36% less chance of heart diseases and stroke resulting in death in people who had received this vaccine. Moreover, recent sufferers of a heart attack were proved to be at 55% reduced threat of experiencing another major heart problem after taking the shot.

How can the flu vaccine reduce the risk of a heart attack?

The flu vaccine  works towards strengthening your immune system, and thereby decreasing the risks of a potential stroke.

One theory suggests that if a person is suffering from flu, he/she experiences an increased heart rate, elevated body temperature and augmented oxygen content of the blood, besides an alteration in the consistency in blood, which can give rise to a blood clot. Now, heart attack is mostly caused when an artery of a person is 85-90 per cent blocked by plaque, but a person having flu may be at a risk of getting it merely with 40 per cent artery blockage. The function of the flu shot is to prevent flu, which in turn prevents plaque build up in your body, thereby reducing chances of a heart attack.

Another hypothesis is that the flu shot intervenes with the functioning of the immune system of your body, and helps in developing antibodies, which provide better protection against different types of infections, thus preventing heart attacks and strokes.
