Is dysentery common in infants, sometimes it is greenish in colour why also is there anything that mothers should not eat, commonly people tend to say not to eat apple, banana as it causes formation of sputum. Kindly suggest.

Is dysentery common in infants, sometimes it is greenish in colour why also is there anything that mothers should not...
Usually baby's stools are not affected by whatever mother eats, colour depends on how much time food stayed in 4 mts long intestine, if it's stay is normal 6hrs it's yellow, if it's faster it's green, of it's still faster it's white, that means white or colourless stools are worst.

6 kg at 11 months of age is very low weight. You should consult a pediatrician and do necessary investigations for not gaining weight. Give high calorie diet like ghee, butter, cheese, banana, pulses etc.

My baby (girl) is just one and half month old. Now she is given dexolac premium (other than mother' s milk). Should I continue the same brand for 6 months? or I can change it to nestle nan 1 or lactogen 1?

Pediatrician, Pune
Why not continuing with exclusive breast milk, what was the need to change the milk, mother' s milk is the best for the baby, the baby requires nothing but the best.

My daughter is 7 years old. She often gets fever. It starts suddenly, and increases up to 103-104F. She is vaccinated properly .Now we are using homeopathic medicines. It gives better results to her when compared to allopathy. But we are unable to control the temperature. It gradually increases up to 103 F and reduces up to 100F at early morning and again raises upto 103 by evenings. This condition remains for at least 3 days .later the temperature goes down to below normal and she becomes very weak .We consulted many doctors. All blood test reports are normal. But there is no improvement . She is studying 2nd STD and she is very active and intelligent too. What do I do for her? How do I know the actual reason behind her health problem? Please suggest me. The reports are as follows. Complete blood picture (method: Capillary Photometric) Hb : 12.9 MCV : 77 MCHC : 35.7 ESR : 13 Remaining values are normal. Vit. B12 : 795 PG/ml UsCRP. : 6.9 mg/l Widal : negative QBC : negative Urine : 2-3 pus cells in HPF.

Frequent high grade fever without definit localisation symptoms like cough, coryza, altered stool are mostly due to viral infections. Another important cause specially in female child can be due to uti. The typical symptoms of uti like burning sensation and increased frequency can be absent in children. Please perform urine culture and sensitivity test done next time she develops fever and before starting antibiotic therapy.

Well hardly any milk output at 2-3 years baby. It is too late to start food. Cereals and chapaties, bread. Now is time to give find taste of child so that it will be easier to switch over. Cereals diet is important. Milk has poor calories and if we try to correct it, result in too much protein which will bring other complication. Thanks.

Apart from a balanced healthy diet, no supplement is usually required. If your doctor has advised any supplements, then it could be because you are deficit for them. There are no generic supplements beneficial for everyone.

White discharge is common. And if your gynaecologist has not suggested any medicines there is no disease like fungal infection, you surely can have a child.

Asthma - Common Triggers Behind it?

If you have been diagnosed with asthma, it is important for you to know about the most common triggers of asthma. Asthma is a medical condition, which is characterised by paroxysmal wheezing respiration dyspnoea. It causes breathing difficulties, tightened chest and coughing. By identifying and reducing your exposure to several asthma triggers, you will be able to manage or control your asthma symptoms and the frequency of your asthma attacks. Here are the most common triggers of asthma you should know about:

Allergies that trigger asthma
Allergies, are common problems and over 80% of people are suffering from asthma and are allergic towards substances like weed pollens, animal dander, dust mites, mould and cockroach particles. Children having large amounts of cockroach droppings in their homes are more likely to develop childhood asthma. Dust exposure may lead to dust mite allergy in asthmatic patients.

Food which triggers asthma
Certain food allergies may lead to isolated asthma, where other symptoms are absent. Patients with food allergies can exhibit asthma as a part of anaphylaxis, which are food induced. The common food items which are associated with allergies include eggs, peanuts, cow milk, soy, fish, wheat, shrimps, salads and fresh fruits. Several food preservatives also trigger asthma. They may include sulfite additives such as potassium bisulfite, potassium metabisulfite, sodium sulfite, sodium bisulfate and many others. These are commonly used in food processing and trigger asthma in sensitive people.

Asthma induced by exercise
Strenuous exercise may lead to the narrowing of the airways in maximum people having asthma. Exercise acts as a primary trigger for asthma symptoms in many people. Most of cough suppressent and antibiotics in cough and cold is not desirable due to untoward side effects remember largest number if cases of cough and cold with without fever are viral and thus subside in less than a week at most you can try home made remedy like karha honey garlic. However if cough and fever is persistent beyond 7 days please consult your doctor. 3 phials of tixylix and antibiotics is not at all justified.

Diabetes - 3 Myths Decoded!

MBBS, MD - General Medicine, DM - Endocrinology, DNB Endocrinology, MNAMS, Speciality Certificate (Endo. & Diab.) (MRCP, UK), Fellow of American College of Endocrinology (FACE)

Diabetes - 3 Myths Decoded!

Diabetes is something which has become so common over the past few decades and this is said to be a cause of worry as most people don't understand how to prevent and manage it. This has led to some myths, gaining more than their fair share of popularity. So, wouldn’t it be a good idea to get to know a little more so as to separate the myths from the facts?

  1. Weight & watch: One of the most common myths when it comes to diabetes is the belief that a person is going to have his or her life adversely affected if he or she is overweight. While it is true that being overweight happens to be one of the risk factors related to diabetes, it is important to keep in mind the fact that there are other risk factors which are responsible, as well. Some of these factors are age and family history, as well as the ethnicity of the person. Taking this into account, it should not come as too much of a surprise to know that there are quite a few people who are not overweight, but are still fighting diabetes.
  2. Packaged tricks: Considering the rise in the number of people who are suffering from diabetes, this has led to food being marketed specifically for their consumption. However, in reality, whatever represents a healthy diet is sufficient for a person who is diabetic. So a diet which does not have a high amount of saturated fats and trans fats and does not go overboard with starch and sugar, but features a fair amount of lean protein works well too. All the fancy diabetic food, which a person buys, is only likely to drive a great hole in the wallet and not have any additional health benefits. Therefore, the extra spending is nowhere close to being worthwhile and should be avoided.
  3. Fruits punch: Many people are of the opinion that it is the processed and sugary food items, which cause diabetes and this is true to a significant extent. However, some people are of the view that since fruit is natural, diabetics can eat as much of it as they like. This is where the thinking gets dangerous. Some fruits are rich in carbohydrates and so it should be consumed in a reasonable quantity, as part of the daily meal plan. After all, too much of any good thing is bad! If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an endocrinologist.

my 3 month baby sufferred by right para hipocampal ischemic .daily 7 to 8 times seizures will came, what is the treatement please tell me

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), DNB (Pediatrics)

Sad to hear tht dear parent. But equally strange is tht with such a diagnosis, i am sure your child is under care of sone neurologist or specialist, so rasimg this question in an open forum like this and that too with a general pediatrician, simply reflects the lack of ur faith in the treating team. Then how can you rely on an answer by sm1whim u dont kno and who has nt even seen ur child. My suggestion would be tostic to the treatimg team and do not change teams also too fequently as such medical issues require a lot of patience from both doctors and parents side. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Dr Vipul.

My daughter's age is 3 and half years. She has constipation problem after every 2 or 3 days. What can i do?
constipation is easily manageable through a prescribed diet. I will prescribe a high fiber diet customized to your case. Do avoid over-the-counter laxatives. Increasing exercise is also important if you lead a sedentary lifestyle. For stubborn constipation in I may recommend a non-digestible sugar called lactulose or specially formulated electrolyte solutions. I being a both a registered dietitian (rd) and doctor have been successfully helping patients with their problems through a holistic approach using customized therapeutic diet and medications. I will also suggest home remedies. Do reply back for private consultation for rx.

If he is bottle fed, you stop feeding from bottle and instead, feed from a cup or glass. No bottle for any fluids. He will be ok.
