How Should I Bath My Baby

Panchkula & Delhi
Mother and Child Care, Panchkula
How Should I Bath My Baby

Bathing  the newborn baby is a pleasurable experience both for the mother and the baby. It can also be defined as a process through which the mother and child bond. A mother understands the requirements of the child and the baby adapts itself to the cleanliness regime of the mother.

When should I start bathing my new born baby?

According to guidelines of WHO, initial bath for a term newborn weighing more than 2.5kg should be given 6 hours after birth. In the term low birth weight babies weighing less than 2.5kgs, only sponge bath is to be given, till the weight crosses 2.5kg.

Dip baths can be given once the umbilical cord falls off i.e. by 7 -10 days. Till then sponge baths are to be given.

How should I bathe my baby?

The room should be warm and free from draught of air as a wet baby can easily catch the chill. Check the temperature of the bath water before placing the baby in the bath tub. The depth of the water should be 5 cms upto the hip of the baby. Eyes can be cleaned by using one sterile water-soaked cotton swab for each eye. The Head should be washed last and dried first to prevent exposure due to large surface area. Pay special attention to skin folds of the neck, behind the ears, underarms, and diaper area. Also wash between the fingers and the toes.

What cleanser/ soap should I use for my baby?

Do not use soap for the first 1 month of life. After that, use any mild unmedicated soap or liquid cleanser with acidic/ neutral pH, that maintains the pH of the baby's skin. Avoid scented soaps and bubble baths.

How frequently should I bathe my baby?

In summer months, daily baths can be given. In winters, dip bath may be given twice/thrice a week and rest of the days, it is preferable to sponge the baby.

Hair wash can be given twice  a week.

A word of caution:

Never leave your baby unattended  to in the bath tub.Bath tub should be disinfected after use. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult the doctor and ask a free question.

Water and milk are best drink for children. Add Bournvita, Complan or Horlicks to milk as they are willing to. These flavors make children interested and they do not leave milk otherwise mostly do leave milk at this age.

My seven years old daughter's eyes are always looking tired and little bit yellowish. But she is very active. Some times she feels headache also. I tried all types of treatment viz allopathic, home, Siddha. None of them have worked. What is the solution?

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Kolkata
Tired looking eyes and bit of yellow but otherwise active child can be due to many causes including jaundice, thyroid problem, malnutrition, exhaustion and even in genetic component which may be absolutely normal. You can try for a good multivitamin formulation along with good nutritious diet and increasing water intake. Even then you can do some blood test like lft, tsh, cbc, urine r/e.

Your son was 1.75 kg at birth, so you can expect him to be thrice his birth wt at 1years of age. Which he is. Low birth weight babies will catch up as they grow, like other kids. Give him time and he will be fine.

Perlice contains Permethrin which is toxic compound. If it was just a lick, do not worry, she will be fine. It is good to keep all medicines, phenyl, toxic things etc under lock and key if you have small babies.

Migraine Clinical Picture

What Symptoms Occur During a Migraine Attack?

Migraineurs have recurrent, severe, and disabling attacks of headache, often unilateral and pulsating, along with symptoms of sensory disturbance, such as light, sound, and odor sensitivity. Nausea and neck stiffness are other common symptoms, and symptoms can be aggravated by movement.

• Some patients experience dizziness during attacks.

• About 20–30% of patients experience aura and neurological symptoms (e.g., visual disturbances), which usually precede the headache phase of an attack.

• Premonitory symptoms such as yawning, irritability, tiredness, cravings, and difficulty concentrating sometimes precede headache onset.

What Is Migraine Aura, and What Symptoms Can Occur?

• An aura is any neurological symptom that occurs shortly before the headache attack. Visual symptoms (e.g., flickering lights or zigzag phenomena), somatosensory symptoms (e.g., paresthesias), speech problems, and rarely, motor symptoms can occur during aura.

• Symptoms usually last >5 and <60 minutes.

• Before migraine can be diagnosed, other possible neurological deficits must first be excluded.

• Cortical spreading depression (see below) is thought to be the pathophysiological cause.

What Can Trigger a Migraine?

• Menstruation

• Shortness of sleep, irregular sleep, or too much sleep

• Stress (or in some patients, relaxation from stress)

• Alcohol (e.g., red wine)

• Caffeine (e.g., coffee, chocolate)

• Foods containing glutamate or aspartame

• Dehydration

• Vasodilating drugs (e.g., nitrates) Epidemiology

How Many People Are Affected by Migraine?

• Women: about 13–18% of the population

• Men: about 5–10% of the population

• Numbers may be lower in Asian populations Chronic Migraine About 4% of the adult population experiences chronic headache, i.e., headache on 15 or more days a month. Breastfeeding - Its Benefits for both Mother and Baby

Senior Residency, MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Gurgaon
Breastfeeding - Its Benefits for both Mother and Baby

Being a mother is the greatest gift to womankind. With the most amazing feeling of being a mother, comes big challenges and responsibilities. The first and foremost being, keeping the baby safe and healthy. Providing babies their best start begins with breastfeeding. Doctors around the world recommend exclusive breastfeeding to begin within the first hour of a baby’s life and continue until six months.

A mother’s milk has no substitute. It is packed with amazing nutritional benefits, the absence of which can lead children at risk of malnutrition and various diseases. Breast milk is often being termed as complete food with added antibodies, enzymes, hormones and fatty acids extremely vital for a delicate immune system of an infant. Babies build their immunity in the first few years of their life and breast milk is critical to developing immunity.

UNICEF working on child’s rights and well-being world over promotes breastfeeding schemes across many countries.

According to UNICEF reports, a non-breast fed child is 14 times likely to die within first six months than an exclusively breastfed child. An estimated 8,20,000 children under the age of five could be saved each year with increased breastfeeding. However, Only 38% of infants globally are breastfed. Looking at India’s state, Malnutrition continues to be one of the greatest challenges. One cost effective, safe and smart intervention to curb malnutrition and decrease infant mortality is breastfeeding.

Let’s now look at the benefits of breast milk for infants and mothers:

  • Breast milk is found to reduce the risk of respiratory tract infections, diarrhea, asthma, food allergies, leukemia, diabetes and celiac disease.
  • Psychologists have long established the positive effects of mother’s touch in the emotional development of babies. In addition to this, breastfeed has positive effects on child’s cognitive development.
  • Breastfeeding has amazing benefits for mothers. It is found to aid weight loss post pregnancy. It promotes better uterus shrinkage and delays menstruation. Lactating mothers naturally avoid pregnancy till they breastfeed. It reduces the risk of breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis later in life.
  • Considering the benefits of this super natural milk, many countries have now adopted an international code of marketing of breast-milk substitutes. The code promotes breastfeeding and restricts marketing of infant formula milk. India along with many other countries signed it.

India has also begun with a baby friendly hospital initiative where hospitals educate new mothers regarding breast feeding and strictly discourage infant formulas wherever possible. The myth of feeding newborn babies with honey, water, sugar does more harm than good. Thus, it is vital to exclusively breastfeed the baby at least for six months before introducing other foods.

Ensure your child’s right to a healthy life through breastfeeding! If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a pediatrician.
