Cataract - How to Reduce Your Risk?

Cataract - How to Reduce Your Risk?

We all have only a pair of eyes, so it is imperative that one understands the importance of vision. When the normally clear lens of one’s eye becomes clouded, the condition is known as cataract. A person suffering from cataract finds his vision to be hazy, discoloured and blurred somewhat like looking outside a frosted window. It causes difficulty in reading, driving a vehicle or seeing the familiar expression on a loved one’s face.
It is a silent killer of vision and initially magnification and lighting in addition to vision aids are helpful, but eventually a surgery becomes imminent.

The exact reason for cataract are debatable, but one can take measures to protect oneself, boost one’s eyes’ defence mechanisms, and protect them from harmful elements. Ultra violet (UV) light has been correlated with incidents of cataract and has a damaging effect on one’s eyes. This requires one to wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays when one is outdoors. Smoking also increases the risk of cataract thus giving one another reason to stay away from active as well as passive smoking.

One must include antioxidants as zeaxanthin, vitamin C, lutein and vitamin A in daily diet to counteract with the daily damage. The addition of a variety of fruits and vegetables to one’s diet ensures that one is getting many vitamins and nutrients. The health of the eyes can be maintained with fruits and vegetables as they have many antioxidants. One must go for eye examination to ophthalmologists in a time bound and regular manner so to detect the onset of cataract at the earliest.

One must maintain a healthy weight by reducing the calorie intake. Excessive consumption of alcohol also increases the risk of cataract. If one is suffering with other health conditions like hypertension and diabetes, it becomes all the more important that one must follow the treatment plan diligently. The exposure to ionizing radiation like X-rays and cancer treatment via chemotherapy increase the risk of cataract.

Cataract develops when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up one’s eye's lens while some cataract are due to inherited genetic disorders causing other health problems. In some cases eye conditions, medical conditions such as diabetes, long term usage of steroids, trauma or past eye surgery also leads to cataracts.

As one ages, the eye lenses become less flexible, less transparent and thicker. Ageing causes break down and clumping together of tissues within the eye lens leading to clouding small areas within the lens. As the cataract continues to develop, the clouding becomes denser and involves a greater part of the lens. Thus, although one cannot prevent cataract, but if one takes the above mentioned steps, then he can reduce the risks of getting it.

Hello lybrate-user. Sorry about your eye problem. Redness of the eye is one of the most prevalent problems observed. Redness of the eyes has multiple causes associated with it. To enumerate a few common causes: (1) allergy of the eye. It is usually caused by improper eye hygiene. It occurs with symptoms of pricking, itching, irritation, watering, foreign body sensation and discomfort. There is a tendency to rub the eyes with fingers, handkerchief, cloth, etc. This is not a good habit because it tends to transmit lots of virus, bacteria and dust into the eye. Allergy usually presents with symptoms of watering (clear water), redness and itching of the eye. Thus, eye hygiene remains the principal modality of treatment along with eye drops as a supplement. (2) infectious conjunctivitis: this is usually associated with white-yellowish discharge. There may occur associated pain and sensation of itching, pricking, watering and discomfort. If so, it would be a good idea to go and show to an eye specialist in person. (3) foreign body lodged in the eye. This is more commonly associated with people who drive 2 wheeler vehicles without protection. It occurs more commonly in one eye. Foreign bodies that commonly get lodged are eyelashes, insect wings, small insects, dust particles, iron particles (more common with people working in the iron industry) the solution for a foreign body lodged in the eye would be better provided by an eye specialist at the clinic because it would require immediate removal from the eye and appropriate therapy. (4) raised eye pressure: this is a condition known as glaucoma. It is not so common as the previous mentioned conditions. There is usually associated pain in the eyes. It is commonly bilateral (occurs in both eyes). There is usually a positive family history of glaucoma associated in a majority of the cases. (5) inflammation of the covering layers of the eyeball. This is known as" uveitis" it is also a relatively less common condition. There is associated pain. It would require a thorough eye checkup including the retina-thus a good idea would be to visit the eye specialist in person. (6) increased blood pressure. This has known to cause redness which is also known as sub-conjunctival hemorrhage. The redness in this case tends to be deep dark and usually occurs only in one portion of the eye. In this regard, a complete ophthalmic evaluation and a systemic evaluation is warranted. From the symptoms described by you, it seems more likely to be a case of allergy. Maintaining the precautions and hygiene that I mentioned should probably work well for you. You could also use a lubricant eye drop along with an anti-histamine eye drop. (3-4 times daily) also, you might require a complete eye evaluation in order to rule out other causes. Your migraine may/may not be related to the eye redness. At times, migraine is precipitated by bright sunlight or dust (pollution). This can also cause redness of the eyes which is also known as allergy of the eyes. Thus, avoiding the triggers for your migraine may help in solving the problem of red eyes as well. Hope my suggestions helped you. Take care,

I am taking treatment for acne. Now the doctor is saying for laser treatment for scars, as I am having lot of them. Should I go for laser treatment? What type of side effects does it have? Should I immediately go for it after my acne medicinal treatment is over or should I wait for sometime to see whether acne returns or not?

Hi lybrate-user, lasers are one mode of treatment for scares. However, there are many other treatments available for scars. These are, peels, dermaroller treatment, mesotherapy etc. These are less expensive and have lower down time. These used in combination with skin lightening creams lead to collagen re- modelling and improve appearance of scars. Laser treatment may have side effects like hyper pigmentation, hypo pigmentation, rebound acne etc. But these may not necessarily happen with every patient. Laser if used judicially benefit acne and scares both.

Hello. I feel that you should consult a physician first for your headache and dizziness issues. You need to get your blood pressure and systemic status evaluated by the physician. If concluded normal by the physician, it would be a good idea to get your eyes evaluated by an eye specialist. Do not delay it further if your symptoms have been there since a month now. Take care. Dryness can last upto one year also after laser surgery so continue lubricating eye drops eye liner and mascara temporarily can increase dryness and cause allergy also. Just continue lubricating eye drops at increased frequency visit your lasik surgeon if you still face problems.

MBBS, DOMS

It is perfectly ok to get it done in summer, or any season for that matter. You will need suitability tests before the procedure of laser is advised. Laser is very helpful for many people who wanted to enjoy freedom from spectacles or contact lenses.

It seems from the history that you are having refractive error in the form of myopia. The treatment for this is by the use of spectacles and contact lenses as you are doing now. The refractive power becomes stable after the age of 18-20 years. Since you are 22 now this refractive power will not usually show any further variation. You can correct this completely by refractive laser surgeries like LASIK. This is the only curative treatment for refractive errors. No medicine can correct this problem. Use of foods rich in vitamin A like carrots, green leafy vegetables and fish if you are non vegetarian will help in providing good eye health but this will not decrease the refractive power. Similarly medicines like vitamin A supplements, antioxidants will help in providing good eye health. Hence food and medicine will help in providing good eye health, but if you want to avoid use of spectacles or contact lenses, then only option available is refractive laser surgeries like LASIK.

My wife has problem of itching in eye she is 26 year old. She is facing problem since last 2.5 year.
She needs to take anti allergy eye drops as allergy can only be controlled with either Drops or Tablets but it can't be eradicated. It goes on its own with the good health of the person.

Why not To Consult An Optometrist - For Your Eye Complaint,- It's Your Eyes , Choice Is Yours.

MBBS, DOMS, MS - Ophthalmology, , Fellowship in phacoemusification
Ophthalmologist, Patna
Why not To Consult An Optometrist - For Your Eye Complaint,- It's Your Eyes , Choice Is Yours.

Never consult a spectacle shop (optometrist like titaneye, lenskart or any local spectacle shop) for your eye complaints. He is qualified and licensed to check eye power only which is just one of hundred causes of blurring of vision or headache

In case an optometrist prescribes any serious medication then most probably he or she is committing a crime.

Problem in vision can be due to problem in cornea, lens, refraction issues, retinal pathology or problem of nerves or eye muscles or glaucoma (eye pressure).

Your optometrist knows how to measure eye power officially and has a degree in optometry. The quality of his degree is questionable in the current commercialized field of healthcare.

You may have lost critical time and your vision by the time you actually visit a eye surgeon since your optometrist assured you that all is well or wrongly sold you a eyeglass when the disease is somewhere else.

Their advise is not legally valid as well unlike eye surgeon, so you cannot hold him responsible for wrong diagnosis as well.

Consult online/ book offline appointment/take second opinion at www. Lybrate. Com/arjunkumarsingh or lybrate app.

Doctor has 34 yrs experience in eye care and experience of 50000 eye surgeries and has pioneered phaco surgery in undivided bihar in 1995 and was the second person to do the surgery in eastern india and central india.

Red eye has many causes. You have to see if it is associated with blurring of vision, pain, discharge and other complaints. But commonly its allergic or infective in origin ie allergic or infective conjunctivitis. Which has simple treatment protocol. But still its wise to see an ophthalmologist for a thorough slit lamp examination to rule out other differentials for red eye.
