Is there any Ayurvedic cure 100℅ for heavy snoring due to deviated septum? I'm a 57 yrs. No drinking/ no smoking normal weight. Pls. Suggest. Thanks.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
No dear surgery is the only solution, there is no such cure mentioned in ayurveda permanent, for breathing purpose your nose should be patent to raise vital capacity if a person suffering from nasal obstruction with mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. This leads to snoring, even allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusiits. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopically. After correcton of the nasal pathway snoring gets relieved.

Idealy surgery (fess functional endoscopic sinus surgery) is treatment of choice for polyps but depending on ct scan report you can try medicines. Start tab. Montair-l daily at bed time and flomist nasal spray 2 puffs twice a day and steam inhalation also. Review with ct report.

He snore a lot while sleeping is there any problem will arise due to this, will it affect to heart or its due to aging ,is daily exercise is ok or have to do any thing more, any homemade solution is there?

BAMS, MD Ayurveda
Sexologist, Lonavala
As per your concern i would suggest you to do following remedy 1. Take 1 glass warm water 2. Crush some cardamom seeds to get ½ tsp cardamom powder 3. Add it to the water 4. Mix well 5. Consume every day at bedtime Causes: • During sleep, muscles in the mouth relax • At times, the tongue falls back • This obstructs the passage of air which leads to snoring • External factors which cause snoring are: o Physical exertion o Consuming alcohol o Certain medicines surely you will get results

Itching in throat and head sound (tinnitus in both ear) nasal congestion ,indigestion since 7 months are these symptoms of throat cancer?

MBBS
General Physician, Bangalore
Hi, Welcome to the Lybrate. Less likely to be the cancer. These could be the symptoms of chronic sinusitis. I suggest you to get Xray of paranasal sinuses and a throat swab culture. To rule out the actual cause.

Hi, I have a cold and my nose won't stop running from past 15 days. I was taking chest on cold but cold and nose running only stopped for one days then next day again cold and nose start running.

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Ahmedabad
Better to find the cause for your cold and avoid it. Likely causes are dust smokes perfumes pollutants and poll end. If not possible to find or avoid the cause than take antihistamines for 10 days. But it is always best to see an ent surgeon and get a check up done.

When I try to swallow food or drink fluid after it passes a 'place' in tongue I feel pain in my ears. What should I do.

BHMS
Homeopath, Howrah
It is due to infection of throat and ear. Ear has a opening in throat so any infection in throat or mouth may radiate to ear. It may occur due to ulcer, pharyngitis, tooth infection, tonsilitis etc. Gargle with luke warm water or with betadine gargle. Consult ent to rule out the cause.

Hi, you may be having a persistent sore throat owing to chronic pharyngitis or other allergic conditions. While it is advisable that a doctor clinically examines your throat, I would recommend the following - (a) you need to have a healthy and balanced diet devoid of excessive spices, salt, oil etc all and have a regularized lifestyle with due emphasis on relaxation/ de-stressing. Instead focus on fresh fruits/ leafy greens. (b) in order that you do not get acidity, it is advisable that you avoid tomato based products, citrus fruits/ juices, greasy, fatty or fried and hot foods, sweets, alcohol, caffeinated beverages, tea (with milk), deep fried flesh foods, peppermint etc. Consume flesh foods, if any, in moderation. (c) avoid sticky foods that create more of mucous leading to congestion in throat. Yellow banana is best avoided. (d) take plenty of water daily and stay hydrated. (e) regularize life style, reduce stress/ strain. (f) protect yourself from intense heat/ cold air. (g) do not take extremely hot/ cold/ spicy/ sour drinks as well as foods. (h) warm saline gargling 2 - 3 times daily. (i) gargle made of tulsi, cinnamon, turmeric or fenugreek seeds and honey are also beneficial unless you are allergic to any of these. (j) avoid overcrowded places. Hope this helps. Take care and all the very best.

Cochlear Implants - How It Can Help

MBBS, MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Cochlear Implants - How It Can Help

Cochlear implant is a medical device that provides direct electrical stimulation to the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Children and adults with a severe hearing loss may be helped with cochlear implants. A cochlear implant is a prosthetic substitute directly stimulating the cochlea and it does not cure deafness or hearing impairment.

A cochlear implant completely by-passes the normal hearing mechanism and stimulates the auditory nerve directly by means of an internally implanted electrode assembly. The implant consists of an external portion that located behind the ear and an interior portion which is surgically implanted under the skin. An implant has a microphone, a speech processor, a transmitter and an electrode array. The sound from the environment is picked by microphone and transmitter and receiver/stimulator sends them to speech processor to convert them into electric impulses. The speech processor placed with the microphone behind the ear, or it is a small box-like unit worn in a chest pocket. The speech processor digitizes the sound signals and sends them to a transmitter just behind the ear. The electrode array collects the impulses from the stimulator and sends those to different regions of the auditory nerve. The electrodes stimulate the fibers of the auditory nerve, and sound sensations are perceived.

A cochlear implant is very different from a hearing aid. Hearing aids amplify sounds so that they can be detected by damaged ears. Cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. Hearing via a cochlear implant is different from normal hearing and takes time to adjust. However, it enables many people to understand other sounds in the environment, recognize warning signals, , and understand speech in person or over the telephone.
The benefits from a cochlear implant depend on many factors, such as the age of the patient when he or she receives the implant, the hearing loss present pre or post patient developed language skills and finally the motivation of the patient and family support

Once a person is referred for cochlear implant, more testing is done which includes audio logic testing, psychological testing, medical examination, and tests performed by the surgeon. It is done to ensure that the candidate will benefit from a cochlear implant and will have the motivation to participate in the process. Once the decision is made to go ahead, the surgery is done. Sometimes it involves an overnight stay in the clinic, and sometimes it is done on an outpatient basis. Six weeks post-surgery, patient is fitted with the external microphone and speech processor and implant is activated and programmed.

The best candidates are those having severe hearing loss in both ears, limited benefit from hearing aids, medical condition that makes surgery risky. Children can be considered for cochlear implants if they have the similar conditions as adults and in addition have support from their educational institutions to development of auditory skills.
