6 Super Foods That Actively Help Lower Cholesterol

6 Super Foods That Actively Help Lower Cholesterol

Some foods punch well above their weight in helping to reduce cholesterol levels, we call them 'Cholesterol busters'. Choosing a healthy diet, low in saturated fat is important in helping to keep your cholesterol low but you can reduce your cholesterol levels further by including these super six foods in your everyday diet

  1. Soya Foods: Being naturally low in saturated fat, soya foods help lower cholesterol. The special proteins in soya also appear to influence how the body regulates cholesterol too. Studies show you can lower your cholesterol by around 6% by including as little as 15g soya protein per day. Choose from: soya alternatives to milk and yogurt, soya desserts, soya meat alternatives, soya nuts, edamame beans and tofu.
  2. Nuts: All nuts are rich in vegetable protein, fibre, heart healthy unsaturated fats, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, natural plant sterols and a host of beneficial plant nutrients. 30-35g a day of nuts (a handful) has the potential to lower cholesterol by an average of 5%.
  3. Oats and Barley: Both oats and barley are rich in a form of soluble fibre called beta glucan. Once eaten beta glucan forms a gel which helps bind cholesterol in the intestines and prevent it from being absorbed. It is recommended that we eat about 3g of beta glucan per day. Foods which contain 1g or more of beta glucan can carry a cholesterol lowering claim.
  4. Foods fortified with plant sterols and stanols: Plant sterols are structurally similar to cholesterol and can be divided into sterols and stanols. Their cholesterol lowering effects have been known for some time. Plant sterols/stanols are naturally found in a wide range of foods such as vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. However, for most people, it is not possible to achieve the optimum intake from ordinary foods.
  5. Fruits and vegetables: All fruits and vegetables are low in saturated fat so eating more helps to keep saturated fat intake low. Fruit and vegetables are also a valuable source of cholesterol lowering soluble fibres. Try to include at least one pulse (beans, peas, lentils) everyday. Other rich sources of soluble fibre include sweet potato, aubergene, okra (ladies finger), broccoli, apples, strawberry and prunes.
  6. Foods rich in unsaturated fats: Keeping our daily saturated fat intake below 20g (women) and 30g (men) is vital for cholesterol lowering, but it is equally important to replace this saturated fat with modest amounts of unsaturated fats such as those found in olive, sunflower, corn, rapeseed and other vegetable, nut and seed oils. Other foods rich in unsaturated fats include vegetable spreads, avocado, oily fish and nuts. Avoid coconut and palm oil as, unlike other these vegetable oils, they are rich in saturated fats.

Hi. Yes, previous smoking and drinking has residual bad effect on body even after quitting them. But it was very excellent that you quit them, definitely you will get good outcomes in long terms. Bp problem may also disappear if it was totally related only to your bad habbits. If it remains, then continue bp pills. Keep checking your bp regularly. Take care.

Cholesterol levels are deranged. You need to start with lifestyle measures. Change your diet (consult a dietician for detailed diet chart) and start exercising, begin gradually and increase to 45 mins of daily brisk walking or yoga. Stop smoking and quit drinking. Repeat lipid profile 6 weeks after these precautions. If they are still high, you will need medications.

Most probably your mother is suffering from oa of knee knee surgery-total knee replacement (tkr) is quite safe & gives uniformly good results, do ask for detailed treatment plan. Surgery should be done when patient is still active & will be able to take benefit of surgery. Do not ignore. It could be beginning of a serious problem. Kindly show me x rays before a final decision can be taken. She will be thoroughly investigated before surgery is under taken. Risk in surgery is less than the risk in crossing road.

I had bypass surgery last year in april month. Shall I stop taking medicine like ecosprin gold 10? this medicine is for thinnig the blood. Also, suggest me some exercise to improve my stamina.

MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Pune
Hello sir, you have undergone major heart surgery and that too in early age, that means your body has tendency to accumulate fat/cholesterol in arteries. The medicines like ecosprin gold is blood thinner which helps to prevent tendency to form thrombus/clot in vessels, so you must need to continue that tablet forever. Regarding exercise please go through cardiac rehabilitation program which is mostly there in more than 100 beded hospitals. Also you can start homoeopathy along with above medicines for better quality of health and life. Thanks.

Dear Lybrateuser, -Your friend could be having sinus bradycardia, a condition in which the resting heart rate is 60 or less than that -this disorder is due to problem with the electrical system of the heart, if the heart beats very slowly then it can not pump enough blood to meet the body's needs & sometimes it may become life threatening -his hypertension & depression also have to be treated as they are contributors in the condition.

I have a ringing sound in my ear. First it was occasional for a week but after that it is for long duration. It started when I had a bad allergic cold with blocked nose and continuous sneezing. When moving my jaw I can feel some wax type feeling. Should I be worried?

Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist,
This seems like fluid collection behind ur ear drum .Otitis media with Effusion. If prolonged will require hearing tests . Steroids will help. Surgical removal of fluid is last option

A heart attack occurs when one or more of your coronary arteries become blocked. Over time, a coronary artery can narrow from the buildup of various substances, including cholesterol (atherosclerosis). This condition, known as coronary artery disease, causes most heart attacks. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort.

During a subsidised heart check up at a private hospital, seeing echocardio report mentioning EF 34%,the doctor initially cautioned me of heart failure. When I told him that I have no issue with health, he put the onus on God as it can not be explained medically. BTW,I had CABG in 2003. My current age is 66. Is the report reliable or the doctor explanation.

Very simple. Do another 2 d echo and know for sure the ejection fraction where end diastolic volume and end systolic volume are mentioned clearly in the report. It is simple mathematical calculation. Your cabg in 2003 was done before an infarction or on diagnosis of coronary artery disease makes the difference. If done for insufficiency without heart attack, then ef should improve and not go down, while after heart attack the muscle function gets compromised so even cabg may not improve the ejection fraction.
