Dyslexia - 10 Signs Your Child Maybe Suffering From It!

All parents expect their child to start going to school, learn writing and learning and do well in academics. However, children with dyslexia may not be able to progress at school at the same pace as others. The good news is that there are early pointers that can help a parent to identify dyslexia in the early stages. This can be helpful in training and support the child socially to learn and socialise normally.  Dyslexia is a disability that affects both spoken and written language. They have a different learning style and when supported and encouraged, instead of mocked and insulted, they can become avid readers. The following are common 10 indicators of developing dyslexia in children, in general, and at school.

10 Behavioural signs to watch for in general:

  1. The child usually has difficulty concentrating and following instructions
  2. The child is easily distracted, seems to daydream, and tends to forget words.
  3. Poor personal organisation skills and is not very good at time keeping.
  4. May get confused between today, tomorrow, yesterday; east and west; right and left; up and down.
  5. Has difficulty remembering seasons, months and days.
  6. Tends to be doing something to avoid work.
  7. Seems distracted, and ‘daydream,’ does not seem to listen
  8. Requires a lot of effort focusing on things at hand and is constantly tired.
  9. Slow pace of processing in terms of spoken or written language
  10. Often appears withdrawn or lost in his own world.

10 Behaviours to watch for at school:

  1. Poor standard of writing and written work in comparison with oratory skills.
  2. Poor handwriting with badly formed letters.
  3. Confused easily between similar looking letters like m/w, n/u, b/d.
  4. Usually, messes up work by using close but wrong spellings and rewriting the same
  5. Mixes up words by using similar-looking words – quiet and quite, tired and tried.
  6. Same word is spelt differently at different times
  7. Poor motor skills and pencil grip leading to slow, inaccurate writing
  8. Produces a lot of phonetic spelling which does not change with repeated corrections
  9. There is difficulty in blending words together, and struggles a lot when asked to read out loud, can miss out or add words that are familiar in between
  10. Has difficulty connecting the story that is being written or read

As noted, these children have very inconsistent behaviour with very limited understanding of nonverbal communication. If these symptoms go on increasing as they grow, it is advisable to seek professional help so that support can be provided and the condition can be arrested at the early stages.

How You Can Regain Your Hearing With Hearing Aids?

MBBS, MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Delhi
How You Can Regain Your Hearing With Hearing Aids?

Loss or impairment of hearing can happen due to a variety of causes and may be temporary or permanent in nature, depending on the type and severity of the condition. One of the most common causes of hearing impairment is age. The degeneration of one's vital organs and senses becomes a reality for many people as the advancement of age happens, and the delicate insides of the ears are no different. Noise pollution, injury to the ear drum or any other part of the ear, as well as the movement of particles inside are only a few of the many reasons for loss of hearing. One of the many ways of dealing with long term hearing impairment is by using a hearing aid.

Read on to know how you can regain your hearing with hearing aids:

  1. Long Forgotten Sound: A hearing aid will help you reacquaint yourself with long forgotten and subtle sounds that you may not have been able to hear for a long time. Many times, this kind of impairment also makes us forget to notice the fact that we do not hear so many normal sounds in our everyday lives - sounds that we probably did not notice even earlier. This may include the whirring of a fan, the whoosh of the air, the pitter patter of pets' feet and so much more. A hearing aid will help in bringing about an adjustment to these sounds that you will actually end up discovering again.
  2. Technicalities: The hearing aid basically works by letting your hearing and ears readjust to the various volumes, intensity and vibrations that one feels when different sounds reach the ears. This helps in hearing better.
  3. Amplification: A hearing aid is basically an electroacoustic device that fits in neatly behind your ear where it is tucked away from plain sight. This device helps in amplifying sounds so that you can catch them and hear them more clearly.
  4. Modulation: The ENT specialist will usually prescribe a certain kind of hearing aid based on your individual condition in terms of volume, size, power and circulation. These factors help in modulating the sounds in a certain way so that they reach the nerve pathways from the inner ear and travel to the brain in a proper and effective way. This is usually done in a customised way to cater to the specific type and cause of your hearing loss.

Using a hearing aid is a matter of retraining your hearing rather than restoring it completely. These aids will be helpful in regaining a better sense of hearing within the condition you are going through, rather than reversing the condition completely.

I am having calcified granuloma i'm my Brain What does it mean? Is it dangerous for my body as I am a 17 years old boy!

Diploma in Diabetology, Pregnancy & Diabetes, Hypertension, Cardiovascular Prevention in Diabetes ,Thyroid
Sexologist, Sri Ganganagar
Because it usually takes some time for calcium to be deposited in a granuloma, it is generally assumed that a calcified granuloma is an old granuloma, or an old area of inflammation. For example, a calcified granuloma in the lung may be due to tuberculosis contracted years earlier that is now inactive and dormant. Since a granuloma is a space occupying lesion in the brain, there are chances that it may press upon the adjoining tissues to produce symptoms. Therefore, most of the patients presenting with this problem are given an anti-epileptic medication as a prophylaxis. Some patients may require pain medications for headaches or other symptoms they are facing. The treatment is essentially controlling the symptoms, to start with. Next step is assessing whether the granuloma is active or not. If active, cause of granuloma formation is investigated and this underlying cause is treated. It is possible that the infection is still there and actively causing inflammation in the brain tissue. This may be a bacteria, virus or even a parasite. Accordingly, medicines are given to combat the infection. Anti- inflammatory medicines are given to reduce inflammation and to prevent the granuloma from increasing in size. Sometimes, if the location of the granuloma permits, surgical excision of the lesion may be done Inactive or dormant granulomas tend to shrink in size on their own. Except for symptomatic treatment, no medical intervention is required for them.

5 Effects Of ADHD On Sex Life

5 Effects Of ADHD On Sex Life

ADHD, which stands for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a chronic brain condition that leads to difficulty in prolonging attention on to a single thing, impulsiveness and hyperactivity. Though it mostly affects children and teenagers, it often continues into adult life as well, and can pose serious issues in adult lives - specially in maintaining jobs and relationships.

Effects of ADHD on your sex life:

  • Impulsivity: If you are suffering from ADHD, it is highly probable that you are often very impulsive in nature - and are susceptible to taking a number of risky decisions, such as unprotected sex
  • Attention-deficit problems: Since your thoughts are often jumping from one thought to the other, you will find it very difficult to actually concentrate on any single job at hand. Since sex requires attention and use of judgment, distractions can prove to be detrimental to a healthy sex life.
  • Hyper-sexuality: This refers to the condition of an unnaturally high sex drive. It is basically caused by the stimulation of the brain by the release of endorphins during sexual arousal, which often leads to calmness and relaxes the restlessness that is otherwise so common to ADHD patients.
  • Hypo-sexuality: This is exact opposite of hypersexuality. This condition refers to an unnaturally low sex drive, where you may often lose all interest in sexual activity completely. Often, this is a product of ADHD itself, but it can also be attributed to being a side effect of a certain type of medication, especially anti-depressants.
  • Other disorders: Women suffering from ADHD have been known to have difficulties in achieving orgasm, often in spite of prolonged sexual stimulation. Also, if you are suffering from ADHD, you may also tend to be hypersensitive - which implies, something that feels pleasurable to your partner, may be painful or irritating for you.

Suggested Treatments:

Certain suggested treatments for improving the sex lives of people suffering from ADHD are:

  • Including variety in sexual activity, such as different locations, positions etc.
  • Communication, which proves very beneficial in combating intimacy issues
  • Prioritize, and try to stay in the moment and not zone out, if you are suffering from ADHD disorders

If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist.

Know The Causes Behind Stunted Growth In Children!

Know The Causes Behind Stunted Growth In Children!

Everyone wants their babies to healthy and grow up to be a healthy-wealthy person. However, little they focus on this issue or are capable of giving their infants the best of medical standards. Problems show up in children early and if overlooked, may hamper their future life a lot. Constant check-ups are necessary to be it pre-birth or post the birth of a baby, and for this, a parent should always be in contact of a pediatrician.
Pediatrics is the medicinal branch that involves the health care of babies, children, and adolescents. It is recommended that people should be under pediatric care up to age 21. Pediatricians are involved with important tests that are standardized by World Health Organisation Child Growth Standards.

Stunted Growth Of Infants and Children
Also known as nutritional stunting, it is a distinctive reduced growth rate in human body development. Stunted growth is the primary manifestation of undernutrition (or malnutrition) and recurrent infections after birth and early childhood. Another main reason is the malnutrition during fetal development brought by a malnourished mother. The accurate definition of stunting according to WHO stands for the “height for age” value to be lower than two standard deviations of World Health Organisation Child Growth Standards.

In 2012, an estimated 25 percent of children under 5 years of age i.e. ~162 million children were stunted. More of this count nearing 90 percent lies only in two continents, Africa and Asia. The affected children may never regain their loss of height, and most of them will never gain the equal weight.

Health effects
Apart from shorter stature, the adolescent may get hit by the greater risk of illness, delayed mental development, lowered cognitive capacity and women with stunted growth have a higher risk of complications during delivery due to the smaller pelvis, and the child could have low birth weight during birth.

Causes of Stunted growth
Apart from malnutrition and some rare genetic disorders, South Asia and most developing nations are having a higher number of stunted children due to poor maternal nutrition, poor feeding practices, and poor sanitation.

Maternal nutrition
Poor breastfeeding during pregnancy and maternal nutrition could be a leading cause for the stunted growth of the child. Also, women who are suffering from anemia or are underweight during pregnancy are more likely to perpetuate the intergenerational transmitting of stunting.

Sanitation
Ingestion of a high number of fecal bacteria through the soiled finger in a poorly sanitized area leads to intestinal infections. This affects the nutritional status of his/her by diminishing appetite, reducing nutrition absorption and increasing nutrient loss.

Feeding practices
Inadequate feeding, lack of vital nutrients, poor calorie intake can lead to stunted growth. Minimum requirements should be met in the diet in proper frequency to avoid malnutrition.

A Note for feeding mothers
Lactating mothers should get themselves proper nutrition, and if they are in doubt of their health should postpone the decision of having a child.

Chronic diarrhoea, Celiac disease, thyroid disorders and growth hormone deficiency also contribute, significantly, to short stature. Regular measurement of height & weight on a growth chart by a trained Pediatrician helps to pick up the lags in these vital growth and development parameters.

Hi Doctor,

Let's answer one by one 1. Opv is NOT a substitute for IPV 2. Minimum two doses of ipv are protective 3. These days Ipv (Imovax) is not available in the market. It's only available at the government hospitals who do not give it to kids born outside. 4. We have newer vaccines like Hexaxim and Easy 6 which includes IPV, that can be given to your 10 week baby. 5. Synflorix and Rita's are fine. 6. You can take ipv even now. Doesn't matter if you missed it at 4 weeks. Hope this helps.

Is hyperactivity related to Adenoid? My daughter is hyperactive and aggressively disturbed that she throws tantrums a...
No, it is not related to Adenoids. By the way you don't seem to understand yours daughter's problems. It seems like ADHD, consult a psychiatrist and get evaluated. Read below. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects children and teens and can continue into adulthood. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder of children. Children with ADHD may be hyperactive and unable control their impulses. Or they may have trouble paying attention. These behaviors interfere with school and home life. It more common in boys than in girls. Its usually discovered during the early school years, when a child begins to have problems paying attention. Symptoms are grouped into three categories: Inattention. Is easily distracted Doesn't follow directions or finish tasks Doesn't appear to be listening Doesn't pay attention and makes careless mistakes Forgets about daily activities Has problems organizing daily tasks Doesnt like to do things that require sitting still Often loses things Tends to daydream Hyperactivity. Often squirms, fidgets, or bounces when sitting Doesn't stay seated Has trouble playing quietly Is always moving, such as running or climbing on things (In teens and adults, this is more commonly described as restlessness.) Talks excessively Is always â on the go as if driven by a motor Impulsivity. Has trouble waiting for his or her turn Blurts out answers Interrupts others Causes of ADHD The cause of ADHD isnât known. Researchers say several things may lead to it, including: Heredity. ADHD tends to run in families. Chemical imbalance. Brain chemicals in people with ADHD may be out of balance. Brain changes. Areas of the brain that control attention are less active in children with ADHD. Poor nutrition, infections, smoking, drinking, and substance abuse during pregnancy. These things can affect a babys brain development. Toxins, such as lead. They may affect a child's brain development. A brain injury or a brain disorder. Damage to the front of the brain, called the frontal lobe, can cause problems with controlling impulses and emotions. Sugar doesnt cause ADHD. ADHD also isnt caused by watching too much TV, a poor home life, poor schools, or food allergies. ADHD can't be prevented or cured. But spotting it early, plus having a good treatment and education plan, can help a child or adult with ADHD manage their symptoms. ADHD Treatment Many symptoms of ADHD can be managed with medication and therapy. Medication: Medications called stimulants can help control hyperactive and impulsive behavior and increase attention span. They include: Dexmethylphenidate Dextroamphetamine Lisdexamfetamine Methylphenidate Stimulant medications donât work for everyone with ADHD. Nonstimulant medications may be prescribed for people older than 6. These include: Atomoxetine Clonidine Guanfacine Therapy: These treatments focus on changing behavior. Special education helps a child learn at school. Having structure and a routine can help children with ADHD a lot. Behavior modification teaches ways to replace bad behaviors with good ones. Psychotherapy (counseling) can help someone with ADHD learn better ways to handle their emotions and frustration. It can also help improve their self-esteem. Counseling may also help family members better understand the child or adult with ADHD. Social skills training can teach behaviors, such as taking turns and sharing. Support groups of people with similar problems and needs can help with acceptance and support. Groups also can provide a way to learn more about ADHD. These groups are helpful for adults with ADHD or parents of children with ADHD. Many people with ADHD live successful, happy, full lives. Treatment helps. Itâs important to pay attention to symptoms and see a doctor regularly. Sometimes, medication and treatments that were once effective stop working. You may need to change the treatment plan. For many people, the symptoms of ADHD get better in early adulthood, and some are able to stop treatment.
