Lung Capacity - 3 Ways to Improve it!

Lung Capacity - 3 Ways to Improve it!

Lung capacity (or total lung capacity) refers to the total volume of air contained in the lungs after one complete inhalation and is a direct summation of your respiratory capacity and residual capacity (the amount you inhale and the amount your lungs can keep). A diminished lung capacity can stem from a number of conditions such as asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, or from bad habits such as excessive smoking. This, however, can be combated by a number of means.

1. Breathing exercises:

  • Deep breathing: Research has shown, that taking long deep breaths, which basically encompasses inhaling for as long as possible and holding your breath for about 15-20 seconds can work wonders in increasing lung capacity if it can be carried out several times a day.
  • Splashing water on your face: Splashing water on your face while holding breath lowers the heart rate, and prepares the body in the same way as if you were about to go swimming. This will automatically increase your lung's capacity to hold air.
  • Try meditation: Closing your eyes and meditating for long periods may also prove to be beneficial. The lesser the amount of energy that you expend, the more air the lungs can hold.

2. Physical exercises:

  • Engage in rigorous cardiovascular activities: Increased cardiovascular exercising, including aerobics, running, cycling is very useful, as it pushes your body to exhaustion, thus forcing your lungs to work harder - in turn, increasing its capacity.
  • Increase water-based exercises: Swimming or exercising in water is very beneficial for the body as it adds an element of resistance to your training regime and overworks your lungs to supply enough oxygen, making them work better.
  • Try exercising at higher elevations: This often works as a foolproof way of increasing lung capacity. Higher altitudes have lower oxygen supply. Thus, overworking your lungs by engaging in intense workouts can be very beneficial for your lungs.

3. Long-term training exercises:

  • Increase your resistance: Breathe in high quantities of air, and take time before releasing it completely and do it very slowly. This forces your lungs to hold air longer, thus stretching them out.
  • Overwork your brain: Try to breathe in extra - more than what you normally do. This forces your brain to work overtime to make sure that the lungs have the capacity to take in that excess air. This will greatly increase lung capacity in the long run.

Hysterectomy - 10 Things You Must Know!

Hysterectomy - 10 Things You Must Know!

Hysterectomy is a procedure that is used to treat a wide variety of conditions. A partial hysterectomy is performed for the removal of the uterus whereas a myomectomy is performed for the removal of the fibroids. A complete hysterectomy is performed in order to remove the uterus and the cervix. With hysterectomy, there comes some critical and sensitive topic that needs to be discussed with the surgeon. Here is a list of top 10 things that need to be known about hysterectomy:

  1. The sex life concern: Unlike common apprehension, hysterectomy doesn’t necessarily mean the end of sex life. In the worst case scenario where the cervix is removed, it takes around 6 weeks before one can resume the sex life.
  2. Hysterectomy can’t cure endometriosis: Endometriosis is a condition that is characterised by menstrual cramp, painful intercourse and chronic pain. Hysterectomy is not the first line of treatment for a condition like this. If any doctor has suggested it, it makes sense to take a second opinion.
  3. Hysterectomy doesn’t mean menopause: This procedure doesn’t mean a menopause or an inability to get pregnant. There are certain other misconceptions such as getting night sweats, hot flashes and menstrual cramp etc. On the contrary, a well-performed procedure will ensure that a person doesn’t feel a thing after the surgery.
  4. The loss in ovaries: Depending on the condition of a patient, a doctor might remove the fallopian tube, uterus and ovaries. It necessarily means a sudden loss of oestrogen and progesterone hormone abruptly. Both this hormone are critical for bone and sexual health. It might also lead to menopause, decreased urge in sex and hot flashes during the night. It is therefore very important to discuss each and every aspect of the procedure before the surgery begins.
  5. Hormonal therapy: Since the removal of ovaries is likely to cause physical discomfort to the body, hormonal therapy can come to the rescue of an individual. Hormonal therapy can curtail the risk of blood clot formation, heart diseases, stroke etc.
  6. Explore other non-surgical options: Hysterectomy is not the last word for any uterus or ovary related problems. The goal is to keep the uterus intact. There are certain less evasive procedures to save ovaries and uterus. This is where multiple opinions come handy.
  7. Less invasive options: There exist less invasive surgeries for treatment related to uterus and ovaries. For instance, a robotic hysterectomy causes far less pain as compared to traditional procedure. It also ensures less loss of blood from the system resulting in less weakness.
  8. The morcellation technique: In case a uterus has to be removed, doctors these days use a process known as morcellation. The latter involves making small cuts into various places of the uterus in order to bring it out. The false apprehension of this process causing cancer cells in the body is not true. Only if a patient is suffering from a particular kind of cancer, it might spread to other parts of the body. A doctor has to be consulted to assure such a thing doesn’t happen.
  9. Cancer apprehension: For people facing a gene defect such as BRAC1 and BRAC2 hysterectomy can reduce the chance of ovarian cancer by a good 80 percent.
  10. Physiological healing post hysterectomy: Although physical healing takes no more than 6 weeks after the procedure, the emotional healing might take some time. It makes sense to seek professional help for postoperative depression.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome - How Physiotherapy Can Help You?

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome - How Physiotherapy Can Help You?

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is also known as Ulnar Neuropathy, a nerve compression syndrome where the Ulnar nerve, also known as the funny bone nerve, gets compressed due to heightened pressure or stretching. It can lead to numbness or a tingling sensation in little and ring fingers, sometimes pain in forearm and an overall weakness in the hand. Ulnar nerve is one of the three main nerves in the arm. It runs in a groove on the inner side of the elbow. Since it travels through a narrow space and has very little protective tissue, the nerve is quite vulnerable to compression

Symptoms:
The symptoms of this condition may range from mild to severe. Some of the mild symptoms include:

    1. Numbness in little and ring finger as the fingers fall asleep
    2. A tingling sensation, usually like the pinch of pins and needles in ring and little finger
    3. Pain in forearm
    4. Weakness in the hand
    5. Some of the severe symptoms include:
    6. Reduction in overall hand grip
    7. A claw like deformity in hand
    8. Wasting of muscles of the hand

Bending elbow over a long period of time like while using cell phone or during sleep can cause ulnar nerve compression. Resting the elbow for a long period over a hard surface can also cause an irritation of the nerve, leading to such symptoms. In some cases, the nerve snaps back and forth over a bony bump, resulting in an irritated nerve.People People who undertake intense physical activity, especially using their arms, are more likely to develop this problem. Eg. baseball pitchers. Apart from this, people who have suffered from a dislocated elbow or have arthritis are also at risk.
Generally, doctors diagnose this condition through the symptoms. However, nerve tests are also conducted to check the level of nerve compression. Electromyography is a procedure in which electrodes are placed on the skin and muscles to measure muscle health. Determining muscle health and level of compression helps decide the mode of treatment.Generally, Generally, the symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome are managed through a conservative treatment. However, in cases of severe compression, surgery can be considered as an option to relieve pressure, moving nerve to the front of the elbow or removing a part of the bone
For mild cases, a towel or a protective cover for elbow is recommended. The towel should be wrapped around the elbow loosely. An elbow splint can be worn at night to protect the elbow from being bent for long time

  1. How can a physical therapist help?
A physiotherapist has an essential role to play in treatment of this syndrome. A therapist can help the patient to learn ways of avoiding pressure to the nerve. After surgery, with restrictions of movement, a therapist can help achieve smooth recovery and movement of the elbow. Your physical therapist will determine the activities that bring on your symptoms. The recommendations at this point will be to avoid those activities for a time. Remember, the nerve is irritated and at times swollen. If the irritation and swelling are reduced, the symptoms should resolve. If If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you canconsult a physiotherapist.

How To Increase Sperm Density?

FECSM ( spain), Fellow of European Society of Sexual Medicine., School of Sexual Medicine, DPM, MBBS
Sexologist, Pune
How To Increase Sperm Density?

Infertility is a bigger issue than it was a couple of decades ago, and it is only going to get worse. The decreasing sperm count and quality are the main contributors for infertility. This has happened due to the changing lifestyle with lack of physical activity, increased stress, relationship issues, a greater amount of pollutants, and digital exposure. These are some of the common issues, and each couple presents a unique case.

There is, however, good news in that there are simple, effective ways to improve sperm count and density, which in turn can help cure infertility.

  1. Smoking: Nicotine harms the body in multiple ways and lowering sperm count is one of the significant ones. For most men going to infertility clinics, stopping smoking is one of the first prescribed remedies. It helps sex drive, boosts sperm count, improves performance, and leaves the couple happy.
  2. Reduce Chemical Exposure: There are plastics all around us. These plastics contain BPA and phthalates which have been shown to reduce sperm count. Plastics have entered all areas of life in the last 40 to 50 years, and it is during the same time that sperm count has reduced by (hold your breath) 50%!!!

  3. Reduce Plastic Use: Reduce plastic use in all forms – from sex toys to plastic food storage to water containers. Chemicals also need to be reduced in terms of eating foods where pesticides would be used. Another source of chemicals is the shampoos, soaps, deodorants, cosmetics, and other toiletries. Try organic products as much as possible. These have an adverse effect on the sperm count.

  4. Water: Avoid chlorine exposure – be it in tap water, bleach or other products. Hydrogen peroxide is a safer option.

  5. Diet: Reduce caffeine intake. Avoid grilled foods. Increase fresh fruits and vegetable intake. Eat whole grains. Avoid canned and packaged foods. Avoid processed and half-cooked foods. Reduce refined carbohydrates. If required, talk to a doctor and get vitamin C and zinc supplements. These are essential for the formation of testosterone hormone and can play a role in improving sperm count.
  6. Exercise: A regular exercise of about 30 minutes daily is highly beneficial in improving overall circulation and increasing sperm count. A word of caution, though – over-exercise can lead to reduced sperm counts and infertility in males.

  7. Stress Management: Another major reason for infertility, reduced sex drive, reduced sperm count, and poor sexual performance is stress. Be it exercise or music, meditation or cooking, identify what works to keep you calm and do it.

  8. Check your Medical Kit: There could be some medicines which may be helping you curing one disease but could be leading to infertility. Talk to a doctor and if there is a culprit, switch to a safer drug.

Benefit Healthy Lemon Drink

Benefit Healthy Lemon Drink

We're all always looking for easy tricks to improve our lives, and time and again, one keeps coming up — the completely wonderful health benefits of drinking lemon water.

As far as routines go, it's a pretty simple one to get into. Keep a pitcher of room temperature water and lemons on hand, and each morning, squeeze the juice from half a lemon (or a whole lemon if you're over 150 pounds) into a cup of water. According to sacred source nutrition, it's important to make sure the water is room temperature, because cold water can shock your system and prevent all of the many health benefits from starting to work.

And what exactly are these health benefits? well, much like lemon can be used for all manner of cleaning products, the citrus fruit has the potential to clear up anything from your skin to that nasty cold you've been harbouring for ages. And of course, smell great while doing it.

Check out these 12 benefits of drinking healthy lemon drinks to start drinking lemon water first thing in the morning:

Healthy lemon drink helps hydration

There may be arguments in the health community about exactly how much water to drink each day, but we do know it's important to stay hydrated. For those who find water boring, lemon has long been suggested as a tasty addition to help compel them to chug.

Healthy lemon drink helps overcome constipation

If you're having trouble pooping, warm water and lemon might be just the thing to help you go. Taking in plenty of water is helpful for constipation in general, and the citrus can give some help to get things moving inside.

Healthy lemon drink helps in curing utis

If you're suffering from a uti (upper tract infection) or want a way to prevent them, lemon water can help. According to ask a naturopath, lemon helps change the ph blood and the urinary tract so harmful bacteria can't stick around.

Healthy lemon drink battles breath

Of course, there's no way to avoid morning breath, but drinking lemon water can combat the bacteria in the mouth, according to conscious connection magazine, and therefore, lessen the potential for bad breath. Be careful, though — lemons can also erode the enamel on your teeth, so it's a good idea to rinse with plain water after your glass.

Healthy lemon drink helps as weight loss program

There are a variety of theories as to why lemon water might cause weight loss (including feeling more full from the pectin contained within). Though it hasn't been definitively proven, we do like what fox news had to say, which is that drinking lemon water will undoubtedly have fewer calories than drinking, well, anything else except for water.

Healthy lemon drink helps to freshen your skin

Thanks to all the vitamin c within lemons, your skin reaps the benefits of you drinking the fruit as well. According to fitday, vitamin c assists in the production of collagen, so having more in your diet can prevent wrinkles from forming. And of course, drinking lots of water is great for skin in general.

Healthy lemon drink pumps up the immune system

There's a reason you're always drawn to oranges when you're sick — once again, the power of vitamin c at play. Consuming the vitamin daily (via lemon water) can help keep you healthy and stave off infection, notes the world's healthiest foods.

Healthy lemon drink helps to recover from a workout

Sports drinks have long been seen as the best way to'rehydrate' after a workout, but as cbc found earlier this year, they're often unnecessary for the kind of exercise most people do regularly. Lemon water, meanwhile, provides the hydration needed, and according to best health, is what hayley wickenheiser drinks when working out.

Healthy lemon drink acts as anti inflamatory and helps with aches and pains

As lily gold of simply healthy and happy says, lemon water can help reduce uric acid in our joints, which is one of the main causes of inflammation, especially as related to arthritis.

Healthy lemon drink reduces phlegm

It's a sad fact of our cold weather existence — phlegm happens, especially in the morning, but lemon juice can help. Dr. David williams recommends adding a little honey to help rid your body of the mucous.

Healthy lemon drink strengthens the brain

Lemon may be known best for its vitamin c, but it also contains potassium, which helps with brain and nerve function. So for a quick natural way to feel more alert, lemon water is a great bet.

Healthy lemon drink acts as detox in cleansing the liver

As reported by Dr. Alexander F. Beddoe's biological ionization in human nutrition, he notes the liver can make more enzymes out of lemon juice than any other food. While we aren't advocating for an intensive cleanse (we know those are unnecessary), this can help give your organ a boost.

Facts Of Human Brain

General Physician,
Facts Of Human Brain

The human brain is the most complex and least understood part of the human anatomy. There may be a lot we don’t know, but here are a few interesting facts that we’ve got covered.

Nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as fast as 170 miles per hour. Ever wonder how you can react so fast to things around you or why that stubbed toe hurts right away? it’s due to the super-speedy movement of nerve impulses from your brain to the rest of your body and vice versa, bringing reactions at the speed of a high powered luxury sports car.

The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt light bulb. The cartoon image of a light bulb over your head when a great thought occurs isn’t too far off the mark. Your brain generates as much energy as a small light bulb even when you’re sleeping.

The human brain cell can hold 5 times as much information as the encyclopedia britannica. Or any other encyclopedia for that matter. Scientists have yet to settle on a definitive amount, but the storage capacity of the brain in electronic terms is thought to be between 3 or even 1, 000 terabytes. The national archives of britain, containing over 900 years of history, only takes up 70 terabytes, making your brain’s memory power pretty darn impressive.

Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that enters your bloodstream. The brain only makes up about 2% of our body mass, yet consumes more oxygen than any other organ in the body, making it extremely susceptible to damage related to oxygen deprivation. So breathe deep to keep your brain happy and swimming in oxygenated cells.

The brain is much more active at night than during the day. Logically, you would think that all the moving around, complicated calculations and tasks and general interaction we do on a daily basis during our working hours would take a lot more brain power than, say, lying in bed. Turns out, the opposite is true. When you turn off your brain turns on. Scientists don’t yet know why this is but you can thank the hard work of your brain while you sleep for all those pleasant dreams.

Scientists say the higher your i. q. The more you dream. While this may be true, don’t take it as a sign you’re mentally lacking if you can’t recall your dreams. Most of us don’t remember many of our dreams and the average length of most dreams is only 2-3 seconds–barely long enough to register.

Neurons continue to grow throughout human life. For years scientists and doctors thought that brain and neural tissue couldn’t grow or regenerate. While it doesn’t act in the same manner as tissues in many other parts of the body, neurons can and do grow throughout your life, adding a whole new dimension to the study of the brain and the illnesses that affect it.

Information travels at different speeds within different types of neurons. Not all neurons are the same. There are a few different types within the body and transmission along these different kinds can be as slow as 0.5 meters/sec or as fast as 120 meters/sec.

The brain itself cannot feel pain. While the brain might be the pain center when you cut your finger or burn yourself, the brain itself does not have pain receptors and cannot feel pain. That doesn’t mean your head can’t hurt. The brain is surrounded by loads of tissues, nerves and blood vessels that are plenty receptive to pain and can give you a pounding headache.

80% of the brain is water. Your brain isn’t the firm, gray mass you’ve seen on tv. Living brain tissue is a squishy, pink and jelly-like organ thanks to the loads of blood and high water content of the tissue. So the next time you’re feeling dehydrated get a drink to keep your brain hydrated.

Hello, Daily requirement of protein in a teenage boy is around 52 gms. This amount you can easily get from your daily serving of food like: 1) eggs, 2) legumes-peas, beans and pulses 3) soyabean (nutrella) 4) fish, chicken, meat 5) nuts-peanuts, almonds 6) low fat milk and curd we've all heard the myth that extra protein builds more muscle. In fact, the only way to build muscle is through exercise. Bodies need a modest amount of protein to function well. Let me explain. For active, working-out individuals one has to consume around 2 grams protein per kilogram of body weight. Ie. If your weight is 70 kg, then you require 140 gms protein daily if you are into gymming. But if you are a sedentary persons, your daily requirement is just 0.8 gms per kg body weight ie. 56 gms which we easily get from our daily food. I hope this answers your query. Protein Equivalence: 1)1 cup milk = 8 gm proteins 2)1 cup cooked beans like rajma=16 gm proteins 3)200 gm of curd/yoghurt = 11 gm proteins 4)10-15 nuts= 5-6 gm proteins 5)2 egg whites 6)Meat, chicken.

Treatment Of Autistic Spectrum Disorders Through Homeopathy

CME Course in Diabetes for Family Physicians, Certificate in Child Health , BHMS

Treatment Of Autistic Spectrum Disorders Through Homeopathy

Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a name given to a range or spectrum of disorders characterised by various symptoms, skills and levels of disability. It is generally diagnosed within the first two years of a person’s life. Children with autism have delayed milestones, including delayed speech, sense of balance, and inconsistent or no eye contact. Children with ASD also develop limited skills in activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and toileting.

A major characteristic of autism is impairment in social functioning, as autism affects the ability to communicate, interact and respond in appropriate ways, thereby impairing social skills significantly. The unusual behaviour and response could be in the form of repetition of phrases or words, unusual tones and facial expressions, and inappropriate display of emotions.

There is no cure for autism as established by medical science. However, there are medications available to manage and treat various linked problems and medical issues like hyperactivity, anxiety, depression and seizures.

Management of autism is a lifelong and complex process. It is more of a journey than a destination. It is ambitious to expect quick results as no one drug or treatment can cause significant change. Treatment is often a combination of therapies and drugs. Daily care services, skill improvement and one-to-one support is extremely important in dealing with autism.

Homeopathy is seldom thought of as an alternate choice when it comes to autism. Homeopathy offers much more than one can think of; however, lack of knowledge about its vast scope and amazing benefits has limited its use among people. Research on the treatment of autism with homeopathy can come a long way, and this has already started showing positive results. Research on reversal of autism with homeopathy is also underway and would surely be a breakthrough in medical science.

Homeopathy is based on a holistic systems approach, which takes into account a constitutional picture of the person to be treated. The physical and mental makeup of each individual is different, and thus each individual responds to a problem in a different way. Homeopathic medication takes into account these differences while formulating a treatment plan. Homeopathic treatment has shown positive results for people with autism, including changes in language abilities, better eye contact, ability to focus, decreased levels of anxiety and repetitive behaviours, which has resulted in promising an overall increased level of social functioning. Homeopathic drugs like carcinosin, thuja and secretin are proven to be effective in treating many behaviors associated with autism.

Parents generally lack awareness regarding availability of this mode of treatment. Once the child is diagnosed, they panic and run to hospitals but hardly find any solutions. It is highly advisable to consult a homeopathic doctor and try out this effective and well researched course of treatment.
