Partial Knee Replacement Surgery - 5 Questions You Must Ask!

Lack of proper mobility due to stiffness and significant pain can be due to a number of bone and joint problems. Osteoarthritis, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, as well as injuries, trauma and inflammation of the knees are only some of the reasons why a patient may be experiencing joint pain. Apart from rest and medication, various surgical procedures may be considered as an option for particularly severe cases. Partial knee replacement surgery is one such option. So, here are the five questions that you must ask an orthopaedic specialist about partial knee replacement surgery.

  1. What is partial knee replacement surgery: This kind of surgery usually seeks only to replace the damaged part of the knee where the movements of the patient get restricted to a great degree. With the help of this surgery, the orthopaedic surgeon can replace the medial or inner part of the knee; or the lateral or outer part of the knee. When the surgeon conducts a surgery to replace the entire knee, this is called knee replacement.
  2. How to prepare for the procedure: The doctor will advise you to stay away from any medication and dietary supplements that may hinder the work of the anaesthesia that will be administered before the surgery. Before the surgery, the orthopaedic specialist will understand your medical history.
  3. What is the procedure: The surgical procedure for partial knee replacement surgery usually involves keeping the knee in a bent position so that all the joint surfaces are well exposed. The surgeon will start by making an incision that is about six to ten inches in length, before removing the knee cap in order to remove the joint surfaces that have faced damage. Once this has been done, the surgeon will attach artificial joint pieces and close the knee. Then, the doctor will bend and rotate to test for balance and proper functioning of the knee. This procedure usually takes close to two hours.
  4. How long does recovery take: The recovery process usually takes about three to four weeks following the surgery.
  5. What to do after the surgery: Pain medication will help the patient in coping with the initial discomfort and after effects of the surgery. Right after the surgery, the patient will be shown exercises before he or she is put onto a graduated walking program where walking indoors and then outdoors will be practiced. The patient will be required to take on physiotherapy for four to six months following this procedure so as to recover in a better manner and have a better functioning knee.

Suffering From Joint Pain - Things You Must Do!

The various movements of the body are enabled by the way the bones work with each other and allow for various movements. You cannot perform a single movement without the coordination of the various joints and bones. It is also for the same reason that joint pains are so common. Accidents, sports injuries, play area injuries, and general ageing are some of the causes that can result in joint pain. There are definitely ways to treat them, but at the same time, preventing them also can be helpful. Read on to know some of the ways to prevent and manage joint pains.

Precautionary measure: For children, ensure they are playing under the supervision of an adult and are wearing sufficient protective gear in the form of helmets, wrist/elbow guards, etc. The same goes for athletes who are prone to injuries. It is always prudent to know your physical limits and not stretch your body constantly. This will go a long way in reducing injuries. Always keep a first-aid kit in your sports bag so that you can manage the pain at the earliest.

If prevention does not work, and injuries do happen, some of the ways to manage them are outlined below.

  1. Cryotherapy/ice therapy: By reducing the blood flow to the affected joint, ice helps in reducing the pain and swelling, which are usually the prominent symptoms of any joint injury. Using an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes every hour is greatly useful in reducing the pain. This can be continued for the next few days until the pain stops. Avoid ice burns by not applying ice directly on the skin; instead, wrap it in a towel or a soft cotton cloth.
  2. Oil massages: Natural oils can be used to massage the affected joints which also greatly reduce pain. Oils which contain menthol or give a topical soothing effect are highly recommended. If you are unable to do it at home, seek professional help for the same.
  3. Hydrotherapy: Warm baths with salts added for extra benefit can provide soothing relief from joint pains. Try these before going to bed to also get good sleep.
  4. Herbal mixes: Tea bags and other herbal mixes can also be used to relieve joint pains. These may work for some and may not work for others. As these are external applications, you can give it a try.
  5. Immobilise the area: The affected joint should be immobilised completely or partially, depending on the extent of damage.
  6. Physiotherapy: While initially the joint needs to be rested, getting into a physical exercise routine with inputs from a physiotherapist is very essential to avoid long-term immobility.
  7. Medications: Non-steroidal pain killers are another proven method to manage joint pains. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a General Physician.

How to reduce knee pain? Please tell me solution. I was injured 6 months ago. Suddenly again pain back last 15 days.

I have a lower back pain for 4 years. I did an MRI it shows at the end of my spinal cord the thing like jelly between disk L2 has skipped out a little bit and its been damaged. Some time my left leg becomes little num and hard to sit walk or sleep. Wht is the best treatment for this sir except operation.

If you have low back pain and sciatica you can undergo intermittent pelvic traction where in your half of your body weight will be added in the electronic traction so that that would help you to reduce the pain, along with Interferential therapy stimulations which would help you to get relieved from the radiating pain. Apply ice for the pain to get subsided immediately. If you cannot go immediately for the physiotherapy treatment. Ice can be kept in the low back where you have back pain. It is suggestible to wear Lumbo sacral belt which would help you to build the abdominal muscle tone which itself would make you feel better. You can also wear MCR chappals which would help you to have less weight falling in the painful back.

Of reasons like abnormal increase in body weight, frequent change in footwear, hard sole of shoes, increase in uric acid etc .so plzz consult us n tell proper history n symptoms like when it increases or decreases for time being you cn go for contrast bath ie dipping foot in hot water fr 4 min then dip in ice cold water fr 1 min repeat it 15 to 20 min

Our house maid help lady 50 yrs. Old has pain the arm most of the day and also in both legs calf many times causing big problem for her life. It said with occasional pai low n but frequency increased and now bad. She has low hemoglobin count also. My questions to help her: 1. What is the reason for the pain, 2. What food items intake will cure her of pain and anaemic nature as I have read that medicines are not useful as body is not designed to absorb chemicals in medicine and only natural food can be assimilated by body, 3. If some medicine will help then please prescribe generic medicines which are cheaper as we are also retired middle class and as such try to help with her children education, transport cost, help from time to time in these hard days etc. Thanking you in anticipation.

Hello Lybrate user .as you have. Mentioned try check out her calcium, d3,n vit b12 level lack these in body mostly responsible for symptoms as you mentioned. Start increase intake natural sources of calcium n protein, take some hot fermentation over pain full areas like joint / muscle, start doing some stretches for calf muscle .see this is balance between your diet which our body require s and conditioning of joint n muscle by stretches n strengthening exercise. I have pain at end of lower back bone part, I have hole in that place and from there something oily thing come out, it pains lot even I can't sit and sleep properly.

The lower end of the vertebral column is inflamed and that bone is called coccyx bone and the condition is called Coccydynia. The conservative management would be to keep ice in that inflamed area during one time in a day and also to sit in a hot water bowl where the penetration of the heat would help to reduce the inflammation. And to reduce the weight falling on the inflammed surface we suggest patients to use air cushion pillow (also called as doughnut pillow) where in the buttock's weight will not fall exactly on the painful tail bone and that would automatically reduce the pain. For this the best treatment would be to undergo Ultrasonic therapy in one of the nearby physiotherapy clinics.

Do back exercises need to b performed regularly? My age is 24 and I am getting pain in my lower back ani left inner thigh muscle if I do not do exercises given by doctor. This is a general low back ache and for this you can follow these measures: one keep a pillow right under the knee while sleeping, next is you can keep ice in the painful area for about 5--10 minutes, if pain still persists you can stretch your body by twisting the waist on both sides how we used to do in the school drill similarly you can try which will help you relax as well will reduce the pain. It looks like you are anaemic. If you have back pain after you sit for long hours then it is due to your haemoglobin levels as it is important to check that. My hand (between wrist &elbow) fractured in 2013 .they attached plates & done surgery. They didn't removed them till now. I'm getting pain some times.(while playing & caring water can etc) wt was the cause for the pain.
