8 Things That Help You Prevent Blackheads

MBBS, DNB (Dermatology)

An overproduction of oil, combined with dirt, bacteria, dead skin cells or residual make-up, usually lead up to clogged up pores, that appear black in colour, to show up on your skin. These are called blackheads. Though treating blackheads is not that difficult, it is always better to prevent them.

Here are some tips to prevent blackheads:

  1. The basic thing you can do to keep blackheads away is to wash your face regularly. It is important to keep your face clean, to prevent oil and dirt build-up, which clogs pores and lead to blackheads.
    • Use gentle cleansers that contain salicylic acid.
    • Never wash your face with hot water; use lukewarm water instead.
    • If you have oily skin, use oil-free cleansers. If you have dry skin, use cream or glycerine-based cleansers.
    • Avoid bar soaps since they tend to clog pores.
  2. Washing your face is important, but make sure not to over-wash. Washing your face frequently will irritate skin, strip it off its natural oils and cause more breakouts. Washing your face two-times in a day is sufficient.
  3. Always remove your make-up before you go to bed. Cosmetic products or make-up, if left on skin for too long, can lead to clogged pores.
    • Use gentle make-up remover or cleanser to remove make-up.
    • Keep your make-up brushes or cosmetic sponges clean to prevent bacteria that can cause clogged pores.
  4. If you lead a very active lifestyle, always shower after laborious activities. Sweating generally leads to an overload of bacteria, which ends up causing blackheads.
  5. After washing your face, don’t forget to apply moisturiser. Sufficiently hydrated skin actually helps keep blackheads at bay. Always use a moisturiser meant for your skin types. For example, if you have oily skin, don’t go for heavy creams; choose oil-free lightweight creams instead.
  6. Since excessive dead skin cells are also a cause of blackheads, it is imperative to exfoliate regularly. Gently exfoliate your skin to remove bacteria and dead skin cells to prevent blackheads.
    • Exfoliating will prevent blackheads, so if you already have blackheads, simply exfoliating won’t do.
    • Choose gentle exfoliators as harsh scrubs can irritate your skin.
  7. Having oily skin means your battle with blackheads is never-ending. The best way to combat blackheads, is to use products that absorb extra oil.
    • Weekly clay masks, counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid treatments can be extremely beneficial.
  8. Lastly, if you do think you see a blackhead on your nose, don’t touch it! Touching or picking it will only spread bacteria and oil, causing more blackheads. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Can Genetics be the Cause of Acne in Adult

Ask Free Question
Acne is a condition that usually occurs when you are in your adolescence, but sometimes it can happen when you are an adult as well. In women, it occurs when they have reached their menopausal age. The chances of adult acne occurring in women are higher than men.

What causes acne in adults

Stress: If you are under stress on a regular basis, then the body tends to produce a hormone called androgen which stimulates oil glands in the skin, resulting in acne flare ups.
Hormonal imbalance: Hormonal imbalance in the body may lead to acne breakouts. You may experience imbalances in your hormones during your periods or when you have reached menopause. Acne may also occur if you have started or stopped taking birth control pills abruptly.
Family history: If other people in the family are prone to acne, then you may be genetically predisposed to it.
Medications: There are certain medications which can cause acne to flare up. They contain chemicals that stimulate hormones in the body thus, resulting in acne.
Skin products: If you have oily skin, then using products that contain oil may aggravate acne. They may also contain chemicals which may clog pores in your skin.

Symptoms of acne in adults are often seen as bumps on the skin, blisters filled with pus and inflamed black heads. Apart from these some people also witness hard and painful lumps beneath the skin.

Prevention:

Stay away from junk food: Avoid eating junk food and fried foods as they can aggravate oiliness in the skin and result in pimples. Rather, replace them with natural foods and other complex carbs.
Drink plenty of water: Drink plenty of water as it helps in filtering out the waste products and toxins from your body.
Avoid smoking: Smoking causes blood vessels to narrow and thus, limits blood circulation in the body. This may cause multiple complications in your skin, acne being one of them.

Hi! Losing your hair can do serious damage to your self-esteem. But luckily, there are plenty of options out there now to help you fight it. Hair loss can affect both men and women. Hair loss is very common these days because of increased stress, nutritional deficiencies, lack of exercise and increase intake of junk food. Other causes of hair fall could be genetic, hormonal imbalances, under-active thyroid gland, and insufficient blood circulation in the scalp. There are many treatment options for hair loss including medications, home remedies and procedures such as PRP, Stem cell therapy. There are various over the counter medications available for preventing hair loss, but you need the ones most suitable to your hair to get effective results. Visit a dermatologist in your area to know which medicines you should take. Home remedies would include oiling your hair more often, include Amla/Indian gooseberry in your diet to promote new hair growth, apple cider vinegar can be effective to control hair fall and it gives soft and manageable hairs.

Hi! The darkening is due to excessive weight, hormonal issue and friction. Losing weight will help the darkening. Do not scrub very hard, it will make the skin more dark. Wear loose fitting cotton clothes. Avoid using harsh soaps, perfumes directly on skin. You can try this home remedy: Squeeze crushed cucumber to extract the juice and then add the lemon juice and turmeric. Stir well and apply on the affected area. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it thoroughly with water. Do this daily or every other day. Do not apply if there are cuts or scratches. There are treatment sessions done in Dermatologist's office for faster results.

Hi! We live in a society where fair skin is considered a valued trait of beauty. But genetic predisposition and poor lifestyle choices can often cause unwarranted skin darkening and localized pigmentation. These skin changes are mainly caused due to excessive melanin production. This skin darkening can also be a result of various factors such as overexposure to sun, damage due to chemical exposure, hormonal changes and even side effects of certain diseases. You can start out with the following basic care: 1.Use a good sunscreen like Photostable, Sun ban etc. 2.Increase the blood supply and oxygen to the skin, exercise regularly or practice yoga 3.Avoid harsh chemicals and fragrant products on face. 4.Home Remedy: Mash half banana. Add 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice and half teaspoon of sandalwood powder, make a smooth paste apply it for 10 minutes then rinse off with water. 5.Have fruit juices, soups, milk regularly in diet. Hope this helps.

Hi! You can use a ketoconazole containing antidandruff shampoo like “Scalpe”after washing scalp with your regular shampoo thrice a week for a month and then as maintenance at least once a week for 2 months. Avoid hair styling products and gels on scalp. Do not keep scalp oiled for long time. Do not share combs etc. Air dry your hair. Avoid using hair dryers. Do not scratch or itch. Use facecare facewash twice a day. Use nadoxin gel on the pimple very little amount or one pea size drop for full face once a day for 15 days. Pimples if come very frequently require a long course of tablets so see a nearby dermatologist for further treatment or if no satisfactory response.

Hi! While genetics play a big role, some additional factors can aggravate hair loss - hormonal imbalance, stress, thyroid disease, anemia, protein deficiency, chemotherapy, and low vitamin levels may cause hair loss in you. Start by following a good diet - Eat adequate amount of protein. Your hair is made up mainly of proteins. Include skimmed milk, cottage cheese, lentils. Vitamin C, Zinc and Vitamin B are other important nutrients for great hair health. So include lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your daily diet. Exercise daily to keep yourself healthy inside out. Hope this helps.

Hi! Hair loss, now-a-days, is common among males and females of all age groups. We all lose some hair strands every day, however, some people lose more than normal strands in a day that can cause severe hair loss. Hair loss is mostly genetic, so if hair loss runs in your family, you are most likely to suffer from hair loss too. Hair loss happens either in clumps that is overall hair loss, or focussed on any one part of head - especially the crown. Next important step is to follow good hair care - Oiling your hair with a mixture of oils like olive, sesame, coconut and castor oil keeps provides moisture to your hair and prevent them from drying and breakage. Once in a week apply a good hair mask. You can mix and prepare different types of masks using green tea, olive oil, milk, gooseberry, thyme, chamomile etc. Condition your hair using organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Rosemary tea once in a while. Hope this helps.

Hi! Outdoor activities make our skin tan. The only option is to wear protective full sleeves clothing and cover as much as possible. Skin already tanned can be treated with de-pigmenting creams and other oral medications. A good skin care regimen comprises 4 steps - cleansing, toning, moisturizing and sun block. Based on your skin type, a dermatologist will recommend you appropriate products. There is no magical instant remedy. The skin tone and complexion can be improved but it takes time. Use a good sunscreen like Suncros gel and apply cream containing kojic acid like demelan at night on dark areas. Hope this helps.

Pimples occur mainly due to hormonal imbalances which causes an overproduction of oil and cells inside a skin follicle. They block the opening of the skin pore and cause the follicle under the skin to swell and become red. It usually starts in teenage, but most of the time lasts into adulthood. Hi! Pimples can be comfortably controlled with treatment. There are many over the counter medications available in pharmacy but you need to use skin products which are most suitable to your skin. Avoid taking anti-acne medications without knowing a skin type. Treatment of acne includes medicines to reduce the breakouts, use of skin products such as face wash, cleansers, moisturisers according to your skin type and a whole range of aesthetic procedures like peels, laser therapy to reduce the current outbreaks and clean the skin, and clean clogged pores. They are safe and do not harm your skin in a long run. You can apply nadoxin cream very small quantity at night on affected area.

Hello! Treat your skin gently. Always apply sunscreen half an hour before going out in the sun. Reapply sunscreen every 3-4 hours till evening. Keep your skin covered in pollution and dust. If you think that applying great products alone will give you glowing skin, then you are wrong. You are what you eat. Nutrition plays an important role to keep you glowing inside out. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains. Try to limit intake of junk, smoke and alcohol as these harm your skin the most. One key point I would emphasize here is to exfoliate your skin regularly. Regular exfoliation can be done both by using natural products like gram flour and yogurt or fullers earth. Using sunscreen after exfoliation is must, so never skip the sunscreen. Exfoliation along with daily moisturization works wonders on your skin. Pamper your skin once in a week with a good face mask, massage and a relaxing bath. See a Dermatologist personally. Your dermatologist will decide a treatment plan for you after a consultation.

Hello doctor, I live in middle East. Since few months I have heavy hair fall. Few months ago same happened but when whether changed it stopped by its own. I used to take head bath everyday. Now reduced it to alternate days. One day after using oil and with diluted 'dove' shampoo. Other two days washing in plain water. I take head bath in night as I won't get time in morning for that. What are the best things I can do in terms of taking care of hair and avoid hair fall? Is it needed to take head bath everyday? Earlier I had dandruff issue, but now it's not there. I do workout at gym daily after that head use to be very sweaty. I allow that to dry before taking shower. On off days I apply oil for 1 hour and then wash it with diluted shampoo. When I comb, so much of hair falls and hair become dry as well as I reduced use of shampoo and conditioner. Which all food I need to have for better health of hair? Please help. Thanks Soumya.

Hello! Regularly shampoo the scalp hair with a normal shampoo and keep the hair clean. Do not change products frequently. Oiling the hair makes the hair soft and easy to comb. Few drops of coconut oil application weekly once or twice are sufficient. Avoid sharing caps/hair bands/ combs/helmet. Keep your combs and brushes clean and wash them regularly. Use a comb with widely spaced, blunt bristles. Comb gently superficially, without injuring the roots of the hair Avoid hot hair dryers and curlers. Avoid regular straightening the hairs or perming the hair or ironing the hairs as it leads hair damage hair fall. Eat adequate amount of protein. Your hair is made up mainly of proteins. Hi! Fungal infections are common due to hot humid weather. Wear loose cotton clothes. Keep the body parts dry. Change underclothes regularly. Changing quickly out of wet, sweaty clothes can reduce the chances of fungal skin infections. Do not share clothes, towels etc. Apply clotrimazole cream twice a day on itchy areas for 6 weeks. If no satisfactory improvement, please see a nearby dermatologist for further assessment.
