Priyanka Chopra's Fiance Is Diabetic - Ways To Manage The Disease Well!

A few days ago, Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra's fiance, took to Instagram to reveal that he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 13 years ago. The famous singer went on to explain that since he has always been working out and eating right to manage the disease. It is a heart-warming message and is a timely reminder that Type 1 Diabetes should be diagnosed on time so that medication can manage its symptoms.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

It is a chronic condition, which is also called juvenile diabetes because it manifests only in children when the pancreas produce little to no insulin. Without insulin (a hormone), sugar cannot enter the cells and energy cannot be produced.

It is estimated that around 97,700 children in India are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes every year.

When should you consult a doctor for Type 1 Diabetes?

If your child shows the following symptoms, it could be Type 1 Diabetes:

  • Frequent urge to urinate

  • Bed-wetting

  • Rapid weight loss

  • Blurry vision

  • Vaginal yeast infection in girls

  • The feeling of always being hungry

What are the risks associated with Type 1 Diabetes?

The complications arising out of Type 1 Diabetes can have a severe and debilitating effect on the body in the long run:

  • Heart Diseases: Type 1 Diabetes can make a person more susceptible to cardiovascular problems like coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and atherosclerosis (constricting of the arteries).

  • Kidney damage (Nephropathy): Type 1 Diabetes attacks the kidney’s filtering system, which can lead to kidney failure or end-stage kidney disease.

  • Nerve damage (Neuropathy): Type 1 Diabetes damages the walls of the blood vessels of neurons especially in the legs. This results in tingling sensation in the toes. Eventually, a person might lose all feeling in the legs.

  • Eye damage: Type 1 Diabetes can damage the retina to cause blindness. It can also cause cataracts and glaucoma.

  • Pregnancy-related complications: Type 1 Diabetes is dangerous for both the mother and the baby. The risks of miscarriage, stillbirth and birth defects go up significantly if the mother has type 1 diabetes.

Management of Type 1 Diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes has no cure. Type 1 Diabetes can be life-threatening unless it is meticulously managed every day of your life. Consult a doctor and dietician to chalk out a course that will help keep the effects of diabetes under check.

  • Since the body does not produce sufficient insulin, insulin supplements in the form of injects are needed. You will have to undergo insulin therapy all throughout your life

  • You need to monitor your blood glucose level every day. You can buy a glucometer to check your blood sugar level at home.

  • The super food that you must include in your diet are - beans, leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, fish with omega 3 fatty acid, whole grains and citrus fruits. Always avoid alcohol and cigarettes.

  • Regular exercising can help manage glucose levels and ward off diabetes-related complications. Some exercises that you should incorporate in your daily regime are- aerobic exercises like running, swimming, cycling. If you are not up to rigorous exercises, you should at least walk for 30 minutes every day.

Type 1 Diabetes can be fatal but with proper medication, diet and exercise, you can go on to live a long healthy life.

Bariatric Surgery - How Is It Beneficial For Diabetic Patients?

MBBS, DNB ( General Surgery )

Bariatric Surgery - How Is It Beneficial For Diabetic Patients?

Diabetes is a gnawing problem that affects millions throughout the world. It is a disorder that if overlooked can lead to serious diseases; cardiovascular ailments, problems related to vision, kidney problems and many more. While medication tries to regulate your blood sugar levels, it is not always unfailing. Medication along with changes in your diet and lifestyle can still not improve your condition in certain cases. At times it is hard to increase the insulin production in a person's body even after administering medicines solely known for their efficacy. Such kind of diabetic patients can therefore benefit from a Bariatric surgery.

What is a Bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery doesn't refer to a single operative method. It involves a host of surgical procedures conducted on a person to rid him or her of obesity. Obesity in combination with diabetes can make a person's life miserable. The treatment of one can come in the way of curing the other. A diabetic patient who also suffers from obesity usually finds it hard to lose weight in spite of exercising or being on diet. Surgery comes to their rescue. This kind of surgery should be fallen back upon as the lender of last resort that is to say when other solutions have not helped. Bariatric surgery is always performed under skilled supervision. It might include reduction of the size of your stomach, removal of a portion of the stomach, or even gastric bypass surgery.

How does Bariatric surgery help reduce Diabetes?

Diabetes can be of three basic kinds;

Type 1 diabetes in which the body produces no amount of insulin.

Type 2 diabetes in which the body produces an insufficient amount of insulin or Gestational diabetes that pregnant women tend to contract.

Bariatric surgery proves to be very advantageous for patients of Type 2 diabetes:

1. Surgery lowers blood sugar levels considerably. Research shows people with acute diabetes made huge improvements after having undergone a Bariatric surgery. Their blood sugar levels dropped by a noticeable percentage and they felt healthier. Reduced blood sugar is an almost immediate effect in some while for others it does take some time.

2. Bariatric surgery exercises a control over cholesterol, blood pressure and triglyceride levels.

3. The impressive benefits of this operation for a Type 2 diabetes patient are not superficial or temporary. If the patient adheres to the lifestyle prescribed by a doctor, takes medication regularly and follows the basics of post- operative care he or she is likely to remain beyond the ambit of this metabolic disorder.

4. It successfully takes care of ailments resulting from diabetes.

5. Bariatric surgery can eliminate the need for medication or it can reduce the dosage of medicines you take.

Diabetes Management!

MD- Homoeopathy
Homeopath,
Diabetes Management!

Diabetes management; move on in life

By focusing on improving lifestyle, the right treatment and some precautions you can easily set aside all your worries about diabetes management. Homeopathy is there to help you.

The word diabetes bothers us all; makes us worry about severe health conditions – from infections to amputations, and from sweet-consumption to stroke and heart attack. However, if we make the right lifestyle changes, that would not really hamper our cozy spectrum, we can easily sail through life.

To put the term in simple words: diabetes is nothing but a condition caused by elevated sugar levels due to deficiency in the insulin production or absorption in our body.

Many factors like lifestyle, the lack of exercise, diet, genetics, among others, may lead to either of the three types of diabetes; Type 1 or Type 2 or gestational diabetes. We must focus on managing diabetes in the best possible way.

Your body tells you

You should check for a few simple signs and symptoms for early detection of diabetes. Thirst and dry mouth along with tiredness, fatigue and irritability are a few primary symptoms. You may feel an increased urge for urination, especially, more often during the night. The other symptoms are sudden changes in weight, increased urge to eat sweets, blurred vision, headache and nausea, and skin problems like itchiness and frequent boils.

Understand your tests

Basis these symptoms if you investigate, and if you fasting blood sugar levels (BSL) are between 110mg/dL- 126mg/dL then you have impaired fasting glucose. But if it goes beyond 126mg/dL then you are considered to be diabetic. Post glucose intake of 75 gm, the BSL between 140mg/dL- 199mg/dL is considered to be signaling impaired glucose tolerance and above 200mg/dL is considered diabetic. The normal blood sugar levels in 12 hour fasting are 70 mg/dL to 110 mg/dL and for a post-meal blood glucose level the range is 100 mg/dL to 140 mg/dL In recent times, however, HbA1C levels are given more importance by the doctors, and HbA1C equal to or more than 6.5% are also considered as diagnostic for diabetes.

Examining concerns through the homeopathic window

Homeopathic medicines are never generic. Depending upon your lifestyle a personalized medicine is prepared to control the blood sugar levels. Also, prior to the medicine preparation and selection, a detailed case study of the patient is conducted so that one can have a medicine that will suit his/her lifestyle along with controlled BSL. Use of specific remedies for immediate reduction of high BSL is done by medicines like Phosphoric acid, Natrum phos, Abroma, Syzigium.

Wiping away skin issues

Itchiness and eruptions are common among diabetic patients. A patient comes with a trouble dealing with itchiness and eruptions around groin area. After initial treatment, the eruptions reduced but were not completely cured. After more examination, It was realized that it was a case of Tibea cruris ( fungal infection of the groin area). The high BSL was the reason for these eruptions and itching. Medicine is prescribed to resolve skin complaints and high blood sugar levels. After three weeks the skin issues were cured. After a month the BSL was normal as well.

Controlling blood sugar levels and hypothyroidism

Higher BSL during pregnancy is called gestational diabetes; the BSL is normal pre-pregnancy among these women. Pregnant at 34, patient was diagnosed with gestational diabetes along with hypothyroidism. Post delivery patient complained of urinary infection. Despite exercising regularly and following a diet regimen, and regular intake of medicines patient failed to reduce weight and could not resolve the issues of high BSL. She was then prescribed a medicine to resolve the infection. Considering her schedule, height, and weight I prepared a diet plan for her which led to a loss of 6 kg in three months along with stable BSL and thyroid levels after a span of four weeks. She still monitors her BSL and thyroid levels; all under control with the help of the prescribed homeopathic medicines.

Be careful with future complications

Initially, diabetes may not have a profound effect on your health but as time passes, and especially if it is not managed well, diabetes can result in a range of health complications. You can still alter your present diabetic conditions to avoid complications, which are:

Diabetic retinopathy: A common cause of blindness in the age group 35-60. Can be avoided if you keep a constant check on BSL and go for fundoscopic screening for your eyes. Homeopathic remedies like Tarantula Cubensis and Aurum met are helpful to treat this.

Diabetic nephropathy: This is a diabetic complication wherein the patient suffers from an impaired kidney function along with loss of protein from the urine. The primary symptom is experiencing an increased urge for urination. This follows with nausea, vomiting, tiredness, facial puffiness and swelling on the feet. The homeopathic remedies are Urea Pura, Ampelopsis Quinfolia Apis Mel, Spongia and Lactic acid.

Diabetic neuropathy: High BSL causes injury to the blood vessels supplying nerves leading to tingling and numbness, pain, abnormal sensation to body part, erectile dysfunction and loss of bladder control. Homeopathic remedies like Pumbum met, Hypericum, Secale cor are helpful to aid diabetic nephropathy.

Diabetic foot: The peripheral arteries and nerves around the foot get affected leading to poor blood circulation along with impaired sensation. This would lead to a non healing wound which may further result into gangrene if proper and immediate care is not taken. The homeopathic remedies are Gun powder, Arsenicum Alb and Staphylococcicum.

Walk an extra mile

If you decide to completely rely on medicines without taking extra efforts then you are heading towards the wrong direction. Medicines help in controlling blood sugar levels only if the intake is supported with a particular routine or minor changes in the daily habits and lifestyle. Some of those easy yet important things you must do to help in controlling the sugar levels are:

  1. Regular exercise should include a combination of cardio exercises like a 45-minute brisk walk along with muscle strengthening exercises.

  2. Weight loss helps to repair the metabolic disorder.

  3. Follow a low carbohydrate diet and shift towards high protein and high fiber foods.

  4. Performing yogasanas like mandukasana (frog pose) is beneficial in controlling BSL.

Mr. R S lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. In diabetes due to increase in blood glucose levels, there is damage to micro (small) & Macro (large) blood vessela. Because of affection to small blood vessels in the kidney, the filtering membrane gets progressively damaged. This leads to increased leakage of proteins from glomerulus. Thus microalbumin uria and albuminuria is not due to drugs but because of diabetes it self. In fact some drugs help in reducing this effect. Therefore, it is always essential to maintain a strict control on glucose levels. Ideally fasting glucose should be < 100 mg or closer to that. PP 150 to 170 mg & HbA1c5 <7. Or around 6.8. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user Lal, Thanks for the query. Hello, soy bean flour is good as it offers extra proteins in the diet. It has no adverse effects on sex life. Most important is to maintain a strict control on blood glucose with fasting < 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c5 <6.8. Because uncontrolled diabetes does lead to Erecrtile Dysfunction.

Mr. lybrate-user Kumar, Thanks for the query. With HbA1c% 6.1, you are in pre-diabetic state. This is not diabetes yet. Following are the criteria for diagnsing: Diabetes Fasting glucose 126 mg and above, PP 200 mg and above & HbA1c% 6.5% and above. So you are in prediabetic state. Modified life style, diet control and exrercise will help in preventing diabetes or postponing it. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. HbA1c% 10.2 is suggestive of totally uncontrolled diabetes. This is dangerous, can lead to early development of long term complications associated with diabetes, affecting eyes (retina), kidneys, peripheral blood vessels, heart and lower limbs. It is clear that present treatment is not helping in control. So please consult your treating physician and upgrade the treatment or if you seek online help, please come back with following details { Fasting, PP glucose levels, diet pattern, extent of daily exercise because with a BMI of 31 plus you are already in grade 1 obesity. That needs to be looked at. Your ideal body weight should be about 56 kgs, as against 82. I await your response. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. HbA1c% 8.3, is suggestive of improperly controlled diabetes. SInce you are already on Glycomet GP and Invokana (Canagliflozin 100 mg), one needs to give a closer look at your diet and exercisem plus height and weight. There is no info on height. My suggestion is to take relook at diet and exercise and plan weight reduction. Thanks.
