Obesity And Diabetes - What All You Need to Know

Obesity And Diabetes - What All You Need to Know

Diabetes is a complex group of diseases with a variety of causes. People with diabetes have high blood glucose, also called high blood sugar or hyperglycemia.

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism, the way the body uses digested food for energy. The digestive tract breaks down carbohydrates, sugars and starches found in many foods, into glucose, a form of sugar that enters the bloodstream. Diabetes develops when the body doesn't make enough insulin or is not able to use insulin effectively, or both.

The two main types of diabetes are:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes typically occurs in children and young adults, though it can appear at any age. In the past, type 1 diabetes was called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Heredity plays an important part in determining who is likely to develop type 1 diabetes. Genes are passed down from biological parent to child.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older people who are also overweight or obese. The disease, once rare in youth, is becoming more common in overweight and obese children and adolescents. Type 2 diabetes is caused by a combination of factors, including insulin resistance, a condition in which the body's muscle, fat, and liver cells do not use insulin effectively.

Physical Inactivity, Obesity, and Diabetes-

Physical inactivity and obesity are strongly associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. People who are genetically susceptible to type 2 diabetes are more vulnerable when these risk factors are present. About 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.

An imbalance between caloric intake and physical activity can lead to obesity, which causes insulin resistance and is common in people with type 2 diabetes. Central obesity, in which a person has excess abdominal fat, is a major risk factor not only for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes but also for heart and blood vessel disease, also called cardiovascular disease (CVD). This excess belly fat produces hormones and other substances that can cause harmful, chronic effects in the body such as damage to blood vessels.

So, measuring your waist is a quick way of assessing your diabetes risk. This is a measure of abdominal obesity, which is a particularly high-risk form of obesity. Women have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes if their waist measures 80cm (31.5 inches) or more. Asian men with a waist size of 89cm (35 inches) or more have a higher risk, as do white or black men with a waist size of 94cm (37 inches) or more.

Simple Steps to Lower Your Risk-

Making a few lifestyle changes can dramatically lower the chances of developing type 2 diabetes. The same changes can also lower the chances of developing heart disease and other life taking cancers.

1. Control Your Weight: Being overweight increases the chances of developing type 2 diabetes seven-fold. Being obese makes you 20 to 40 times more likely to develop diabetes than someone with a healthy weight. Losing weight can help if your weight is above the healthy-weight range. Check your BMI. Losing 7 to 10 percent of your current weight can cut your chances of developing type 2 diabetes in half.

2. Get Moving and Turn Off the Television: Inactivity promotes type 2 diabetes. Working your muscles more often and making them work harder improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. This puts less stress on your insulin-making cells.

3. Tune Up Your DietFour dietary changes can have a big impact on the risk of type 2 diabetes-

  • Choose whole grains and whole grain products over highly processed carbohydrates.
  • Skip the sugary drinks, and choose water, coffee, or tea instead.
  • Choose good fats instead of bad fats.
  • Limit red meat and avoid processed meat; choose nuts, whole grains, poultry, or fish instead.

If you are already suffering from diabetes, then do take a walk everyday and adopt healthy eating habits. Along with that relieve your stress and take proper doses of insulin or medications as prescribed by your doctor. To more simplify, if your waist is more than half of your height you are at the higher risk for developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

My mother had rotator cuff injury 3 months back. She was on conservative treatment but not much improvement. She is recently diagnosed diabetic. What are the risk of surgery. how will be the prognosis? How many days to be stayed in hospital.

Hi lybrate-user, Rotator cuff injury is very common in diabetic. It's basically of two types 1. Acute Significant trauma resulting in mere strain to complete tear. 2.chronic degenerative tear due to disease. Outcome depends on presence/absence of active movements. If strain / partial tear then conservative treatment may help. In complete tear, conservative treatment usually helps in pain control but restoration of movement is usually impossible. In that situation Surgery to repair (with intact musculotendinous bulk) it or very rarely reverse shoulder arthroplasty (when repair is not worthy) is the only answer to get a functional mobile shoulder obviously with glycemic control. Regards.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. To bring blood glucose in control one needs to start treatment with suitable drugs, plus diet control and regular exercise. Millets are good, but those also provide carbs so taking is limited quantity is very important. Only millets will not help in bringing glucose level down. Thanks/.

Diabetes - Homeopathic Treatment For It!

Diabetes or diabetes mellitus is referred to as a group of disorders that are characterized by a high blood sugar level. Diabetes mellitus occurs when the secretion of insulin (a pancreatic hormone responsible for converting the sugar from consumed foods into energy) is insufficient or the body cells do not properly respond to insulin. Insufficient secretion of insulin causes glucose formation in the bloodstream and mixes with the urine.

The psychological factors responsible for Diabetes Mellitus. In majority (not all), this disease originates with some recent stress in life. This disease is an epidemic in late thirties till Fifties. In this age, a person is productive in his profession and most of the time there are job or financial issues that play a very vital role in generating stress and hence Diabetes.

Mostly, in my practice patients reported, before developing Diabetes, a recent financial loss or strain, love disappointment, a betrayal, or fear of loosing a job etc., Sedentary habits, diet and genetic factors are secondary. Homeopathy keep such things in account before prescribing and in many cases Diabetes is reversible. Thers is a vast field of diabetic complications where Homeopathy has a LOT to offer. One of them is diabetic neuropathy. For example pain in soles, nerves, lack of energy, sexual dysfunction, mood disorders, diabetic ulcer etc.

Homeopathy For Diabetes-

  • In homeopathy, the main focus is on functioning of the pancreas in efficient insulin production. There are specific medicines which are used effectively in the treatment of all the stages of the diseases.
  • Homeopathic treatment can help improve the general health of a person with diabetes:
  • If a person with diabetes is in good health, his or her insulin requirements will be steady and the blood glucose well controlled at the same time.
  • Homeopaths resort to different approaches towards diabetes Management of Blood Sugar. First is when the blood sugar level is very high, the priority is to control it and there are homeopathic remedies that could reduce the sugar.

Homeopathy regards health as a state of balancing the equilibrium of the life force. Whatever treatment is taken it’s always advisable to be in regular touch with the doctor and keep sharing the health status with the doctor. The homeopathic preparations useful for diabetes are as follows:

  1. Phosphoric acid: Useful remedy for diabetes with the symptoms of recurrent physical or mental exhaustion, loss of memory and numbness in the feet.

  2. Abroma Augusta: This homeopathic preparation is useful for diabetics who show the symptoms of polyuria, an increased sensation of hunger and weakness in the muscles.

  3. Syzygium Jambolanum: Useful in reducing the blood sugar level quickly and effectively. This homeopathic preparation is also useful to cure diabetics with the symptoms of polyuria, increased sensation of thirst and long-term ulcers.

  4. Gymnema Sylvestre: This Homeopathic preparation acts as a useful remedy for diabetics who are experiencing the symptoms of weight loss with a severe lack in energy levels.

  5. Uranium Nitricum: This homeopathic preparation is a useful cure for diabetes with the symptoms of depression, nausea, irregular urination, severe pain in the back, delayed menstrual periods in women, significant pain in the head and dry skin.

How Does Homeopathy Treat Diabetes?

How Does Homeopathy Treat Diabetes?

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is characterized by high blood sugar levels, increased hunger and thirst and frequent urination. It is of two types; Diabetes Insipidus and Diabetes Mellitus (Type-I and Type-II).

Type-1 Diabetes is also known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes. This means your body cannot produce enough insulin to metabolize starch and sugar from your food into an energy source due to the lack of the pancreatic hormone insulin. It is more prevalent among young adults and children.

In case of Type-2 Diabetes, your body produces insulin but the cells are not able to utilize it well. Hence this condition is termed as insulin resistance. Thus, regular supplementation of insulin is not necessary. Diabetes mellitus is mainly a chronic disease.

How does Homeopathy treat Diabetes?

Conventional medicines employ the use of insulin for treating diabetes. Since this is precisely a replacement therapy, the disease turns into something life-long. Homeopathy focuses on the functioning of your pancreas for efficient and adequate insulin production. Homeopathic medicines help in treating loss of flesh or a feeling of weakness caused as a result of Diabetes Mellitus. People suffering from increased urination, lack of appetite, as well as dryness of mouth and increased thirst also benefit from Homeopathy. It is a great remedy for people with weakened vision due to diabetes. It aids in lowering the blood sugar levels and treats poor memory, kidney damage, numbness of feet and hands, skin ulcers, constipation and weight loss in diabetic patients.

Few homeopathic medicines for treating Diabetes:

  1. Uranium nitrate

  2. Phosphoric acid

  3. Phosphorus

  4. Lactic acid

  5. Bryonia

  6. Insulin

  7. Abroma Augusta

  8. Syzygium Jambolanum

  9. Gymnema Sylvestre

To provide a dietplan for any one following details are needed: Fasting, PP glucose levels, HbA1c%, weight, height, present dietary pattern, extent of daily exercise and lipid profile. Plus present treatment with dosage. It is better if you come in a private conversation (paid consultation) then I will be able to guide. Hello, Thanks for the query. The very fact that your HbA1c% has decreased to 7.4 % is the proof that your medication is quite appropriate. Fortunately drugs used in the treatment of diabetes are very safe and do not lead to any untowards effects on the body. SO there is no reason to worry. Please follow the doctor's instructions, diet plan and do regular exercise to keep blood glucose in control. Thanks.
