The medication prevents the synthesis of the bacterial cell walls, as it binds to the penicillin-binding proteins. The drug stops the last stage of the bacterial cell wall formation. It also works as a beta-lactamase inhibitor by binding to beta-lactamase enzyme produced by bacterial cells, which in turn inhibits its enzymatic action and prevents beta-lactam antibiotics from being metabolised by the enzyme.
