Tips to Manage Hypothyroidism Naturally!

Tips to Manage Hypothyroidism Naturally!

Hypothyroidism is a medical condition that is characterized by an underactive thyroid gland, which controls the metabolism process. As a result, your metabolism rate is affected. If you are experiencing symptoms such as dry skin, bowel-related problems such as constipation, muscle cramps, depression and sensitivity to cold, then it is advised to for a diagnosis to ascertain whether you are suffering from hypothyroidism. After you are diagnosed with the condition, discuss your condition with the doctor and consult them on whether you should try to manage it naturally at home. The following are some of the natural cure and management options for hypothyroidism:

  1. Fish Oil: It may interest you to learn that fish oil supplements have a favorable effect on hypothyroidism treatment because they are immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory in nature. Also, they maintain the health of the thyroid gland. Moreover, they contain the omega-3 fatty acids that help control inflammation and naturally boost immunity in the body. Normally, the recommended dosage of the supplements is pegged at 3 grams a day. Nevertheless, take the opinion of your doctor to be on the safer side. If you are having bleeding troubles or taking blood thinners, refrain from using this remedy.
  2. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): Did you know that apple cider vinegar is considered to be a cure for hypothyroidism because of its detoxifying properties? Moreover, the ingredient brings about a healthy balance between the acid-alkaline levels, aids weight loss, improves metabolism, and regulates hormone production. As part of treatment with ACV, you should prepare a drink by mixing 2 tablespoons of organic ACV in 1 glass of warm water. Follow by adding honey to sweeten the preparation and then you can consume the solution. You can practice the remedy once per day, as a part of your hypothyroidism treatment.
  3. Ginger: There are several reasons for ginger to be considered as an effective cure for hypothyroidism. Ginger improves thyroid function and also possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, nutrients such as potassium, zinc, and magnesium are contained in ginger. You can exploit the goodness of ginger for treating hypothyroidism by sipping ginger tea, two to three times in a day.
  4. Nettle: The Nettle herb serves as a home remedy for hypothyroidism because it contains iodine. You should note that the hypothyroidism arises in patients who are deficient in iodine and consuming iodine-rich foods can prove to be beneficial for bridging the nutritional deficiency gap; thereby, resulting in their recovery from the disorder.
  5. Flax Seeds: On the basis of the fact that flax seeds are a good source of the omega-3 fats, their intake is advisable for the hypothyroidism patients. The nutrients contained in flax seeds support the functioning of the thyroid gland. The flax seeds remedy entails pounding 1 tablespoon of flax seeds. Thereafter, you should mix the powdered form of the seeds in water and consume the preparation in the morning, on an empty stomach. Alternatively, you can consume 1 tablespoon of flax seeds oil, on a daily basis, for exploiting the health-related advantages and treating hypothyroidism as well.

In addition to the above-listed remedies, you should include sea-based vegetables, whole grains, and the fortified varieties of cereals in your daily diet. Furthermore, be sure to avoid the vegetables that belong to the cruciferous family as they are filled with goitrogens, which are anti-nutrients and adversely affect the thyroid gland. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Tips To Manage Hyperthyroidism Naturally!

Tips To Manage Hyperthyroidism Naturally!

A medical condition that is characterized by an overactive thyroid gland, as a result of which excessive quantities of the thyroxin hormone are secreted, befits the description of hyperthyroidism. As part of the disorder, the patients may experience rapid weight loss, swelling at the lower-end of the neck, tiredness, sleeping troubles, irregularities in heartbeat, nervousness, and undue perspiration. You may treat yourself with natural remedies when diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. However, you must work as per your doctor’s suggestion for treating the disorder. You must avoid self-medication for averting the risk of medical complications. The following are some of the ways by which hyperthyroidism can be managed naturally:

  1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fats are required in the body for maintaining the health of the immune system and cellular structure. Also, they improve the body’s ability to regulate the thyroid-related hormones. If you are deficient in these nutrients, there is a possibility of suffering from hormonal imbalance, with the inclusion of the thyroid hormones. Therefore, adding foods that rich in the omega-3 fatty acids is beneficial for hyperthyroidism patients. For bridging the nutritional deficiency gap, you should consider adding grass-fed animal-based foods, fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds to your dietary regime.
  2. Broccoli: Consuming broccoli is advisable for you during the hyperthyroidism treatment period because the food has substances such as goitrogens and isothiocyanates that restrict the thyroid gland from secreting excessive hormones. Consider adding the uncooked variety of broccoli to your diet for recovering in a timely manner from the disorder. Other vegetables that are part of the cruciferous family of vegetables and beneficial for hyperthyroidism victims include radish, kale, mustard greens, turnips, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and rutabaga.
  3. Antioxidants: Antioxidants are nutrients that are needed in the body for fighting the free radicals that cause oxidative stress and a host of bodily disorders. There is a link between the heightened levels of thyroid hormones and free-radical damage as well as oxidative stress. You should add antioxidants in the diet to enable the body to counter the injurious elements. Consider the addition of fresh fruits and vegetables such as bell peppers, squash, tomatoes, grapes, and berries for enjoying their goodness with respect to their rich antioxidant value. Foods that are sources of nutritional compounds such as magnesium, selenium, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C can help you get the required doses of antioxidants.
  4. Proteins: The intake of protein-rich foods is known to benefit hyperthyroidism patients because they increase muscle mass and strength. This is vital for recovery because your muscles tend to become supple due to an overactive thyroid gland. To get more protein in your diet, you can add one to two tablespoons of whey protein powder to your smoothies before gulping the drink. Moreover, you can increase the consumption of proteins through the intake of plant-based proteins such as yogurt, nuts, beans, seeds, and nut butter. The intake of animal-based proteins, including eggs, the cold water varieties of fish and lean meats, are advisable as well.
  5. Sea Vegetables: To normalize the functioning of the thyroid gland, the addition of sea vegetables in your diet is recommended because of their iodine-rich nature. The iodine is helpful for restoring thyroid health. Sea-based vegetables such as kombu, sea palm, arame, hijiki, and nori can be added to the diet to recuperate from hyperthyroidism. Also, these vegetables improve your overall health as they are sources of other nutrients such as folates, calcium, the B-complex group of vitamins, iron, and magnesium.

As a part of your hyperthyroidism treatment, you can include berries, Indian gooseberry, and cabbage to your diet as well. They have a favorable effect on the thyroid gland and support the health of the endocrine system. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Endocrine Dysfunction and Diabetes - What Should You Know

Endocrine Dysfunction and Diabetes - What Should You Know

The endocrine system is a network of glands that produce and release hormones. These hormones are in charge of several functions in the body, from heartbeat to tissue growth to the creation of new life. Even a small issue with one or more of these glands can interrupt the careful balance that the body strikes with these hormones. This causes an endocrine disorder or dysfunction. One of the most common endocrine disorders is diabetes. Many other endocrine disorders include adrenal insufficiency, gigantism and other growth hormone problems, hypothyroidism, and polycystic ovarian disease.

Causes of Endocrine Disorders: The endocrine system consists of several glands, including the pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the brain, adrenal glands in the kidneys, and thyroid in the neck, as well as the pancreas, ovaries, and testes. The stomach, liver, and intestines also secrete hormones related to digestion. Most common endocrine disorders are related to the improper functioning of the pancreas and the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands. The causes of endocrine disorders are grouped into two categories – Disorders caused by a gland producing too much or too little of a hormone, which is known as hormone imbalance and disorders due to the development of lesions in the endocrine system that can affect hormone levels.

Testing for Endocrine Disorders: An endocrinologist is specially trained in problems related to the endocrine system. Normally, blood and urine tests are conducted to check the hormone levels to determine if you have an endocrine disorder. Imaging tests may be done further to locate or pinpoint a nodule or a tumor.

Diabetes – Most common endocrine disorder: Diabetes is a chronic, lifelong disease that affects the body’s ability to process insulin. Normally when you eat, the pancreas, an organ located in the upper abdomen, produces the hormone insulin to move glucose from the bloodstream into cells where it can be used for energy and growth. With diabetes, either the pancreas produces too little or no insulin or the body’s cells don’t respond to the insulin. Diabetes deprives the body’s cells of nutrition and leads to an abnormally high level of glucose in the blood. Over time, this can result in damage to the blood vessels and organs and premature death. The three most common forms of diabetes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes.

Symptoms of Diabetes: Symptoms of diabetes that can indicate a dangerous, potentially life-threatening change in your blood sugar level can occur suddenly and rapidly. Symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, confusion, sweating, feeling shaky, extreme irritability, or aggressive behavior. In case you have diabetes and experience symptoms of high or low blood sugar, test your blood sugar and follow your treatment plan based on the test results.

Treatment of Diabetes: Treatment for diabetes varies among cases but a good diet plan and regular exercise are extremely valuable for both management and prevention of this endocrine disorder. Some other treatments include regular blood sugar monitoring, insulin treatment, oral or intramuscular administration of medications, pancreatic transplant in the case of type 1 diabetes and bariatric surgery for people who are very overweight.

How Hormone Fluctuation Can Lead To Low Energy Levels?

How Hormone Fluctuation Can Lead To Low Energy Levels?

Hormones are powerful chemicals that help keep our bodies working normally. They stimulate, regulate, and control the function of various tissues and organs. Made by specialized groups of cells within structures called glands, hormones are involved in almost every biological process including sexual reproduction, growth, metabolism, and immune function. These glands, including the pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, and testes, release various hormones into the body as needed. Hormones have an especially large impact on the energy levels and persistent and chronic fatigue sufferers have been shown to often have hormonal deficiencies.

Many women between the ages of 35 and 55 complain of low energy levels or extreme fatigue characterized by a rush of exhaustion and the feeling of the drain of energy. It prevents them from carrying out the simplest of everyday tasks.  Many say that they are tired throughout the day and find themselves craving for naps more often.

When to consult a doctor?

Bloating, irritability, palpitations, mood swings, problems related to blood sugar, trouble concentrating, infertility, and fatigue are some of the most common symptoms of hormone imbalance. These compounds affect every cell and system in the body. Hormone imbalance can debilitate you. Some hormonal shifts are normal, like monthly fluctuations responsible for menstruation and ovulation or the changes that occur during pregnancy.

Menopause is another time for a normal hormonal shift in a woman's life. The other times, these fluctuations may be due to a medication or a medical condition. Though it isn't a disease in itself, fatigue is a condition that should not be overlooked because it is generally indicative of an underlying medical cause. Prolonged low energy level without any known reason immediately calls for an attention from a doctor.

Complications of fatigue: Infrequent and mild cases of fatigue can occur as a natural part of the hormonal changes associated with a woman's menstrual cycle. However, chronic fatigue caused by hormonal imbalance can interfere with the quality of a woman's life. In rare cases, when chronic fatigue is left untreated, it can lead to certain complications, which are more risky for a woman's emotional and mental health. These possible but uncommon complications of fatigue can include depression or a reduced reaction time and these conditions have some specific warning signs. Women who experience frequent symptoms of extreme fatigue that are interfering with their daily lives should be immediately treated.

Prevention of fatigue: There are many different things that a person suffering from fatigue can do to prevent and manage symptoms. While there is no one single cure for fatigue, there are changes that a person can make in his life, which will help to decrease the mental and physical effects of fatigue. Lifestyle changes are the first line of treatment available and are very important to treat fatigue. Focusing on diet, exercise, and following healthy habits can have a huge impact as well. In addition, right supplements can also help to keep the endocrine system in a good shape and therefore, help prevent or ease the symptoms of hormonal imbalance, which includes fatigue.

Addison Disease - Treatment Options, Management and Prevention

Addison Disease - Treatment Options, Management and Prevention

Often, a medical crisis does not happen suddenly, and your body shows a few symptoms well before it reaches the critical phase. However, there are conditions when the symptoms occur quite suddenly, and one such is the Addisonian crisis.

Addison's disease is a condition that occurs when the body fails to produce sufficient levels of certain hormones that are secreted by the adrenal glands. In this disease, the adrenal glands produce too little cortisol and even low amounts of aldosterone at times. Often referred to as adrenal insufficiency, it may occur at any age, and both sexes are affected by it. The worst part is that the disease can be life-threatening.

The symptoms of Addisonian crisis-
While severe fatigue, hyperpigmentation, severe fatigue, lightheadedness, salt cravings, and muscle and joint pains are the common symptoms of Addison’s disease, pain in your lower back, severe vomiting and diarrhea, low blood pressure, and high potassium and low sodium are the symptoms of acute adrenal failure (Addisonian crisis).

The low levels of cortisol associated with the Addisonian crisis are life-threatening; hence, when you experience one or more of these symptoms you must seek professional care immediately.

Treatment options that are available for Addison's disease-
Nearly all treatments for Addison's disease involve hormone replacement therapies for correcting the steroid levels that the body is not sufficiently producing. Some of the most effective treatment options for Addison's disease include:

  1. Oral corticosteroid medicines- Prednisone, Hydrocortisone and Cortisone acetate may be used in the pill form for replacing cortisol. Sometimes, doctors also prescribe fludrocortisone for the replacement of aldosterone.
  2. Corticosteroid injections- This is given to people who cannot take oral pills.

People diagnosed with Addison’s disease are at risk of developing Addisonian crisis. Such people must be well-aware of how to tackle the condition if they are to face it. Some people have a home kit which includes hydrocortisone injection. One should not wait too long or wait to feel very weak before taking the injection. Also, it is important to call the emergency after taking the injection to get further treatment.

What should you do to prevent and manage the Addisonian crisis?

If you indulge in heavy workout sessions, you should take ample amount of sodium. This is also recommended when you are experiencing a stressful situation, including any infection, operation or some minor illness.
You should not skip your meals or indulge in binge eating, but focus on having a well-balanced diet. You should also take plenty of healthy fluids throughout the day. Avoid exercising or doing any physically strenuous job in hot and humid weather. Also, you need to balance your active stretch of time with adequate rest.

Taking the prescribed medications on time, and carrying a hydrocortisone kit is crucial. Also, you may carry a card stating the condition that can help during an emergency.

Addison’s disease, in most cases, cannot be cured; so, it is vital to be aware of the symptoms and the ways to manage them to avoid an emergency.

Diabulimia -Why Is It The Most Dangerous Eating Disorder?

Diabulimia -Why Is It The Most Dangerous Eating Disorder?

If you are diabetic and are in a practice of manipulating insulin levels to bring about weight loss, you must understand that it may have catastrophic consequences on your health.

Even though it is not yet officially regarded as a medical condition, diabulimia is a serious eating disorder that can bring about diabetes complications. According to experts, as many as one-third of the young female diabetics could be suffering from various diseases due to this condition. Even though it is more common in females, it is also seen to be occurring in significant numbers of young men as well.

Why is diabulimia one of the most dangerous eating disorders?
Diabulimia is a condition where the person deliberately injects less than the required amount of insulin to lose body weight. Contrary to type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes has no connection with lifestyle or diet. The ones who are affected need to get insulin since they are not able to produce enough insulin for their daily requirements. It is crucial to mention the function of insulin at this juncture. Without this hormone, the digestive system would not be able to break down the sugars from the foods and obtain energy from it. Without insulin, the sugars derived from food will be forced to feed the existing fat, organs, and even muscles.

When you are purposefully depriving the body of insulin, you are heading for permanent kidney failure, liver failure, fertility issues, heart diseases and even premature death. But it may not be visible from outside- you will have normalcy in your appearance. Since you are restricting insulin inside the body, you will have a very high blood sugar level. This invariably runs the risk of various complications such as damaging the eyes, kidneys and the nerve endings. The worst thing is that the warning signs may go unnoticed until it is too late. Therefore, it is always suggested to seek advice from endocrinologist as and when you notice any of the signs and symptoms mentioned above.

Know the warning signs
Even though the term is often deemed inaccurate, diabulimia holds the premonition of a serious pattern of disordered eating. Some of the most common warning signs of this disorder include:

  1. Unexplained weight loss
  2. Improper growth pattern in adolescents
  3. Hyperglycemia
  4. Hypoglycemia
  5. Recurrent spans of diabetic ketoacidosis along with extreme thirst, extreme hunger and frequent urge to urinate
  6. Poor blood glucose control, particularly if it was pretty well in the past
  7. Higher than normal hemoglobin A1c levels
  8. Microvascular disease that is affecting the eyes, heart, and kidneys
  9. Peripheral neuropathy resulting in weakness and numbness in hands and feet
  10. Disorder in eating
  11. Depression, deterioration of performance and social withdrawal

Manipulating insulin can be fatal for people who have type 1 diabetes. In case you see that you are affected by any of these signs and symptoms, you should seek medical attention without further delay.
