Laser Tattoo Removal - 7 Tips For Easy Recovery!

Laser Tattoo Removal - 7 Tips For Easy Recovery!

Many-a-times, people regret of having got themselves inked because the design may no longer suit their lifestyle, interests or the very reason they got inked in the first place might not hold much meaning to them. However, the good part is that, owing to the breakthrough of medical science aided technology, you can now eliminate traces of your past mistake from your skin surface. However, a tattoo removal using LTR (Laser Tattoo Removal) might lead to the formation of scabs, crusts or blisters, within eight to seventy two hours of having undergone the process. This might even form a superficial wound on the skin. To ensure that your skin heals completely, you can consider these tips.

  1. Apply antibiotic ointment on your skin at least thrice a day and keep your inked area bandaged for not less than three days. This protects your weak and damaged skin from infection. After three days, take off the cover to expose the lasered area of your skin to air. This helps your skin to dry out as well as get prepared for your next treatment. Scabbing may persist for a couple of weeks.

  2. Never get panicky on noticing blisters as they play an integral part in the healing process. They are indicative of the fact that the immune system of your body has begun to take off the ink from your skin and is trying to recover.

  3. Do not peel off the crusts, blisters or scabs that have formed after the treatment, lest they might leave scars on your skin.

  4. If you experience any sort of inflammation or discomfort after the removal, try putting ice-pack or using acetaminophen a day after the session.

  5. Use sunblock or sunscreen creams to protect the part of your skin that has undergone treatment. Refrain from applying cosmetics or anything that might cause itching to the area.

  6. Take a shower, about couple of hours after the treatment. Nevertheless, stay away from bathing in a bath tub or even swimming unless the blisters heal completely. The water from a swimming pool or a bath tub may contain bacteria that may result in further infection, thus delaying the healing process.

  7. Get medical assistance in case of any tingling sensation or mild bruising apart from the above mentioned discomfort.

Facial Cosmetic Surgery - What Should You Know?

Facial Cosmetic Surgery - What Should You Know?

The first thing anyone notices about you is your face and often people find themselves wishing for things like a slimmer nose, fuller lips etc. This is where facial cosmetic surgery comes in. Facial cosmetic surgery can address areas like your eyebrows, nose, cheeks, chin etc to give you the facial structure you've dreamed of.

Take a look at some of the common types of facial cosmetic procedures:

  1. Brow lift: Frown lines and creases that develop across the forehead, between the eyes and over the nose bridge can be addressed through this procedure. This surgery is performed mainly to combat signs of aging and involves raising eye brows that may be sagging over the eyelid.
  2. Eyelid surgery: Puffiness in the upper eye lids may be caused by excessive fat deposits. When combined with sagging skin, it can disturb the contours of the eye and in some cases cause vision problems. Blepharoplasty or eye lid surgery removes this excess skin and corrects fine lines, wrinkles and bags under the eyes.
  3. Nose: A rhinoplasty is used to reconstruct the nose. The nasal skin is separated from the tissue and cartilage structure underneath which is then reshaped as desired and then sutured together again. Rhinoplasty is of two types; open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty.
  4. Ears: An octoplasty is a facial cosmetic surgery aimed at correcting protruding ears or large outer ears and correcting ear deformities such as a lop ear, cupped ear or shell ear and torn ear lobes. This surgery is usually performed on children between the ages of 4 to 14.
  5. Chin: Surgery on your chin can reshape it to make it look smaller or bigger as desired. This can be done by reshaping the jaw bone or inserting an implant. In some cases the procedure may be combined with liposuction.
  6. Forehead: Signs of aging on the forehead, frown lines or heavy brows triggered by stress and hereditary furrowed lines above the nose can be addressed with a forehead lift. This procedure is often performed along with a facelift or eyelid surgery.
  7. Facelift: As we grow older, our skin loses its elasticity. This triggers the development of wrinkles and deepens creases along the nose and cheek. Facelifts address these signs of aging by tightening skin and strengthening the muscles beneath it. Facial cosmetic surgery can also be used to correct congenital defects such as cleft lips and to treat scars.

Surgery to repair a cleft lip or cleft palate not only enhances appearances but also enhances the quality of life by improving functionality. Scar revision surgery involves the injecting or application of steroid medication to lighten the scar and make it less obvious. To treat burns that leave behind prominent scars, a procedure called Z plasty may be used.

Mommy Makeover - What To Expect?

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS

Mommy Makeover - What To Expect?

Bringing a child into this world is one of the most wonderful phases of a woman's life. At the same time, this involves a lot of body changes - physiologically, physically, chemically, and emotionally. Mommy makeover refers to one or a combination of procedures that are done to alter the appearance after delivery, especially relating to one or more of the following:

  1. Tummy that is sagging (no fat, just loose skin) with stretch marks
  2. Breasts that are altered in size and shape, sometimes the enlargement could be completely disproportionate with the body and cause back pain
  3. Undefined thick waistline with irregular fat accumulation
  4. Fat deposits on the abdomen, thighs, hips, and trunk that do not reduce with dietary changes and exercise
  5. Skin changes on the face and around the eyes, giving an aged appearance
  6. Post cesarean, there is excessive skin around the surgical scar

Pros:

  1. Reduces tummy size
  2. Gives a more youthful appearance
  3. Alters breasts to the desired shape and size

Cons:

  1. Weight loss, if happens, could affect the results
  2. Subsequent pregnancies don't have any complications with tummy tuck but with another pregnancy the effects may be lessened or reversed.
  3. Since surgery is involved, the risk of unforeseen complications always exists (for instance, in breast implants, there is capsule formation or capsulitis, in rare cases rupture may require removal.)

Mommy makeover is not a single step procedure, but a combination of plastic surgical procedures that are done depending on the problem you present with.

  1. Tummy tuck - If there is abdominal sagging, the tummy is tucked back into position by removing the fat and excessive skin and reworking on the belly button.
  2. Liposuction - Excessive fat deposits in the hips, thighs, trunk area can be removed by sucking out the fat deposits. Most commonly done in the hips and trunk area.
  3. Breast lift - Sagging uneven breasts, drooping nipples, reduced volume are all indications for a breast lift. During the surgery, the breast tissue is repositioned to reproduce a better shape and size and reposition the nipples if required.
  4. Breast reduction - Large breasts are a common problem, and breast reduction is one of the most requested for procedures.
  5. Breast augmentation - Either saline implants or silicone are used to restore breast size and shape to the desired results. Usually, breast lift is combined with breast augmentation.
  6. Facial corrections - From dark circles to sagging skin to wrinkles, facial appearance can be changed based on the presenting symptoms.

These are very brief descriptions of the various procedures that are done as part of mummy makeover. A detailed consultation with your plastic surgeon regarding costs, subsequent pregnancies, aftercare, recovery, healing, and limitations and risks is to be had ahead of the surgery.

4 Myths About Hair Transplant!

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon, Mohali

When should you consider hair transplant surgery + 4 Myths busted

Opting for a hair transplant can be one of the many ways in which you can curb your receding hairline and put an end to baldness. This procedure involves taking hair from areas of the head that have dense hair growth, such as the back of the scalp, and transplanting it to the site where new hair needs to be created.

If you’re a MAN, these points should decide the time for getting a hair transplant surgery:

  • You have been losing hair from male pattern baldness( a pattern of hair thinning and hair loss that occurs on the crown area, forming an ‘M’ shape) over years.
  • Your hair loss persists despite taking medications to stop it.
  • Your hair fall has reached a plateau stage (no growth or loss phase) and has stabilized.
  • If you’ve experienced hair loss due to burns, trauma or cosmetic procedures.

If you’re a WOMAN, the right time to opt for a hair transplant procedure is when:

  • You have lost hair as a result of burns or trauma.
  • Your hair loss has been brought on by cosmetic procedures, like facelifts.
  • You have female pattern hair loss.

4 MYTHS associated with hair transplant you shouldn’t believe!

Myth 1: Hair transplant gives you a head full of hair
Fact:
This is not the case. Hair transplant only serves to lessen your bald appearance. It is a procedure that works by re-distributing your existing scalp hair in order to advance the front hairline. As a result, you end up looking younger with an appearance of a fuller head of hair.

Myth 2: It can be carried out at any age
Fact:
This procedure should be ideally performed when your hairfall has more or less stopped experiencing any change, following a period of activity. Although it’s not easy to define the exact age as to when you would reach the plateau stage, this procedure should be done after 23 years of age.

Myth 3: It does not leave behind any scars
Fact:
You can expect minimal scarring in a hair transplant surgery. Of the varied methods employed in hair transplant, it’s the FUE (follicular unit extraction) method that doesn’t leave behind a linear scar, but multiple small dots in the area from where the hair has been taken. They are hardly visible to the naked eye and hence FUE is more popular now-a-days.

Myth 4: It’s a very painful procedure
Fact:
Hair transplant is performed under local anaesthesia. The site where follicular units will be harvested is made numb using sedatives and injections of local anaesthetic medicines, so that you don’t feel any pain whatsoever. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

FUE Hair Transplant - Know About The Best Technique!

FUE Hair Transplant - Know About The Best Technique!

Losing hair can be a nightmare for any man or woman. Once upon a time, hair loss was restricted to elderly people but today, men and women as young as 30 find themselves balding as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle, exposure to pollutants etc. Thankfully, modern medicine has found ways of correcting hair loss through hair transplant surgeries. A follicular unit extraction (FUE) is one such type of hair transplant procedure.

  • This is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the extraction of hair follicles from the back of the head with a special micro punch. To do this, the hair at the back of your head is first shaved down to 1 to 2 mm in length. Local anesthesia is then applied and the scalp is scored to loosen the hair follicles. Each follicle is then extracted carefully and preserved in saline until it can be implanted into the bald part of your head.
  • Since each follicle is being individually extracted, it is crucial to work with an experienced surgeon. It doesn't hurt to ask to see a doctor's certificates. Before committing to surgery, ask to see before and after photographs of their earlier clients and ensure that both of you have the same aesthetic sense.
  • Along with the surgeon's expertise, the size of the micro punch needles also play an important role in getting the best results for a follicular unit extraction. The smaller the needle used, the less damage caused to the scalp. This also minimizes the visibility of the extraction. Ideally, a needle should be no wider than 0.95mm.
  • Grafts extracted via FUE are much more sensitive than those extracted via strip extraction. This is because the extraction technique leaves hair follicles without a lot of protective tissue. How the follicles are handled after extraction influences their survival rate. As these are very vulnerable to dehydration, they must always be kept damp and handled with care.
  • The incisions made to implant the hair follicles also play a role in determining their lifespan. The best incisions are those made by blades that have been customized to match the length, width, depth and angle of incision to be made. By matching the dimensions and angle of the incision to the direction of a patient's natural hair growth, the grafts have a higher chance of connecting to blood vessels and nerves. This also ensures that the transplant looks as close to natural as possible.

Male Breast Surgery - What Should You Know?

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS

Male Breast Surgery - What Should You Know?

One of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the world today is that of breast augmentation or reduction. This is a fairly common surgery wherein depending on the requirement of the patients; the breasts are either made bigger with the help of implants or reduced in size by excising fat and tissue. Although a majority of these patients are female, there are an increasing number of male patients, who opt for male breast surgery as well.

The need for male breast surgery-

The requirement for male breast surgery arises due to the occurrence of Gynecomastia or the development of male breasts. In this condition, fat and glandular tissues are stored within the male chest in the pattern of female breasts, thus giving it a feminine look. This is a common occurrence among men and can be a cause of social embarrassment for the man as well as affecting his self-esteem. Some of the causes for gynecomastia or male breasts would be –

  1. Excessive Weight Gain.
  2. Hormonal changes within the body where testosterone levels drop due to conditions such as ‘Hypogonadism’ (in men, the inability of the testicle’s to function correctly) and estrogen levels increase.
  3. Medications used to treat other disorders such as certain anti -depressants, cancer medication, and anti-anxiety medications among others.
  4. Excess consumption of alcohol and certain drugs.
  5. Hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid secretion by the thyroid gland).

It isn’t always just fat!

While many people tend to blame male breasts due to the accumulation of fat, this may not be the case always. Even skinny or people with an athletic build may notice misshapen chest that has more of a feminine appearance and thus would like to correct that. This is obviously caused by hormonal factors and genetics of body shape as well rather than just being obese or overweight.

Types of Male Breast Surgery-

Male breast surgery revolves around breast reduction and contouring to give it a more flat and toned look. This can be achieved in either of these ways:

  1. Liposuction – This is a fairly common procedure and is minimally invasive; meant to suck out the fat through a small opening on the skin. With the help of liposuction, doctors can easily contour your chest to have a more masculine look by removing the excess fat. This procedure is a very popular one as it takes less time to recover and also isn’t invasive. However, this is used as an option for male breast surgery when the problem isn’t acute.

  2. Surgery to remove excess tissues and fat – If the male breasts have excessive glandular tissue and the problem is acute, a more extensive form of surgery wherein the glandular tissue is excised may be required. However, this is also not very invasive and you can get back to your regular routine within a few days after surgery.

Liposuction vs. Lipofilling: What's the Difference?

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon, Mohali
Liposuction vs. Lipofilling: What's the Difference?

Liposuction is a common type of cosmetic surgery, which involves the removal of excess body fat. People with isolated fat deposits which are non responsive to diet and exercise, opt for Liposuction.

On the other hand, lipofilling, a relatively recent procedure which involves grafting the individual's own fat to the parts of the body that need filling. Liposuction is used to remove fat from various parts of the body. Lipofilling involves grafting the fats taken out by liposuction to the areas that require it. Both the procedures address the following areas:

1. Abdomen
2. Face & Neck
3. Buttocks
3. Knees
4. Thighs and Calves
5. Hips
6. Breasts
7. Arms and many other areas.

The procedural differences
The basic difference between the two procedures can be seen in the two words itself. In the context of fat displacement, one involves suction while the other involves filling. Liposuction involves removal of the fat while lipofilling takes an extra step to allocate the fat to the required parts of the body. Lipofilling is popular for enhancing the Buttocks also. This procedure is well known as Brazilian Buttock Lift.

Reasons for utilizing these procedures
Both the procedures are opted for various reasons. Liposuction is used for reducing double cheeks, fat bulges, removing excess fats for improved sexual function or for rectifying body irregularities which cause difficulty in movement. On the other hand, lipofilling is used for breast augmentation, creating smoother contours in various parts of the body and for grafting additional muscle mass in more prominent parts of the body. The type of people likely to use it Liposuction in general would be opted by people with fat bulges while on the other hand lipofilling would be opted by people with contour deficits.

Breast Reduction - Is It Safe?

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS

Breast Reduction - Is It Safe?

While the complaint of being born flat chested is faced by a number of women, there are a few women who have very heavy breasts. Over the time, large breasts have been linked with a number of health problems such as backaches, neck pain, numbness in the fingers and shortness of breath. Thus, it is not only for cosmetic reasons that many women choose to undergo breast reduction surgery. This involves the removal of tissues and skin from the breasts to reduce the size of the breasts and reshape them. Breast reduction is a very safe procedure, however, just like any other surgery, there is always a risk and hence the question arises, 'How safe is breast reduction surgery'.

Since the procedure involves making incisions in the skin and removing tissues, most women feel pain in the breasts for the first few days post surgery. This later transforms into a mild discomfort before which completely goes away after a few days. Pain medication and anti inflammatory drugs can help ease the pain. Swelling and bruising in the area is also a common effect of the surgery and may last for about a month or two. The patients are usually advised to wear a surgical bra all the time as it help in giving proper support which in turn helps ease the pain and reduce swelling.

Scarring is one of the most common risks associated with this surgery. To remove the tissue, a surgeon has to make an incision under the breast. This incision is usually positioned in line with the natural curves and creases of a woman's body in order to conceal them. However, it always leaves behind a scar. Scarring varies from person to person and also depends on the type of incision made. Typically, scars fade over time but for some women, they may remain noticeable for many years.

Fortunately, in most cases, the incisions can be restricted to areas covered by a bra or bikini. Some women complain loss of sensation in the breasts or nipples after such a procedure but mainly this is a temporary side effect and resolves within a few months of the surgery. Depending on the type of procedure, some women may also find it difficult to breastfeed after the surgery.

On its own, breast reduction surgery is a fairly safe procedure as long as it is performed by a certified plastic surgeon on a healthy patient. Therefore, it is important to do plenty of research and go for a best possible surgeon. So, do not let your fear of surgery keep you from making life more comfortable for yourself!
