About Sputnik V

Named after the first Russian soviet space satellite Sputnik-1, Sputnik V is the world’s first registered vaccine with a well-studied human adenoviral vector-based platform. It was made by the Gamaleya National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Russia. The vaccine has already been registered in 65 countries and the count is still increasing.

The composition of the vaccine can be categorized into two active and base ingredients. The active components include Serotype 26 and serotype 5 ( modified replication-defective adenovirus ), modified to be incorporated with the protein S-expressing gene of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The active components are mixed with the base elements like-

  • Tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane
  • Disodium EDTA dihydrate
  • Polysorbate 80
  • Sucrose
  • Magnesium chloride hexahydrate
  • Sodium chloride
  • Ethanol
  • and Water.

Adenoviruses are non-enveloped double-stranded DNA viruses that cause non-life-threatening infections in the gastrointestinal epithelium, respiratory or ocular in a diverse range of hosts. The infectious Adenoviruses are replaced with a protein from another virus spike, which not only makes it safer but also helps the immune system to produce antibodies.

The technology is easy to engineer and it makes the vaccine faster than any other procedure, as the new vaccine can be created by modifying the initial carrier vector with genetic material from new emerging viruses.

The first dose is composed of Serotype 26 (Ad26) followed by the second dose which is composed of serotype 5 (Ad5) adenovirus. The key to using two different types of adenovirus is to decrease the possibilities of antibody production which is against the adenovirus after the first shot. In case your body develops antibodies that are against the serotype 5 antibodies, the second dose is ineffective on your immune system.

As per the current data, the efficacy rate of Sputnik V against the COVID-19 virus is 91.6%. This is because of the methodology that has been used to make the vaccine. Adenoviral Vector-based vaccines are easy to manufacture and quite effective as they consist of two different types of adenovirus vectors (rAd26 and rAd5) in both of the shots individually. It not only makes it safer than other vaccines available in the market but makes it more effective to produce antibodies in your immune system.

The vaccine is manufactured by RDIF (RDIF, Russia’s sovereign wealth fund) with a joint partnership with approved countries like India, China, South Korea, Brazil, etc., and has been approved for receivers who are and above 18years of age.

Because of the unique nature of the vaccine, It is important to take both shots of the vaccine to achieve the efficacy level. Furthermore, the recommended gap between the two jabs of the Sputnik V vaccine is approximately three weeks or 21 days.

As per the vaccine experts around the globe, the vaccine is expected to provide an optimum amount of protection against the virus, even with the newer strains/mutated versions. Your body responds to vaccination in every case by developing more than one type of antibody that will effectively destroy the virus.

The Russian Gamaleya National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology vaccine is the first vaccine in the world that has the highest efficacy against coronavirus. Yet the vaccine might have some side effects which can be seen after the first shot of vaccine-
