I am a vegetarian since 1995. During this time I got shocked due the prediction of death written in a yearly horoscope by a famous indian astrologer. Since that day I fail very very ill. I couldnt walk alone. Also could not sleep, eat & do anything. Till the year 2000 I didn't know what has happened to me. I was always depressed till that time. So on December 2000 I courage to go to a psychiatric (neuro) and only after that day I could know that what I was suffering is depression. So from that day to till today I am taking serlift 100 mg. Through which I began to feel good & confident. Though I feel good good sometime It gets relapsed time to time. So my doctor advised me to check my thyroid level. I did as I was advised & from that day my doctor prescribed me thyronorm sometime 50 mg and sometime 75 mg with respect to thyroid report. Now its been almost 18 years that I am taking these medicines. Now my question is (1) is it safe for me to take these drugs for life-time as told me by my doctor. (2) Is there no way I could be treated safely as I sometime feel taking these medicine for lifetime is not good.(3) How regularly I have to consult the doctors, as I usually visit him in a year, as it takes me full day to go there and come back which is far away from my locality. There isno psychiatric doctors till some months ago. Now I saw one. So kindly advised me what am I to do to overcome this problem which I sometime feel gets relapsed again. Right now I am 48 years age. I have a wife who is a govt nurse, 2 daughters 13 years and 17 years and a mom of 78 years at home. I work in a government department as clerk therefore I request here as what am I supposed to do to overcome this problem. As I know whenever I tried to discontinue this medicine I used to fall sick again. I used to think a lot but not intensionally but it comes itself automatically. Please advise me and help that how to correct myself.

Dear lybrate-user,
You have hypothyroid problem that needs life long replacement by thyronorm. The dose of thyronorm will be decided by TSH level and your clinical condition. It can be done by any MBBS doctor. You can consult the doctor where your wife is working. It can be done once in 3 - 6 months or if needed in between.
You have another problem - it may be recurrent major depressive disorder or dysthymia. Both are life long disorders needing life long treatment. Please ask the same M...more

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. As you are aware, depression is a neuro chemical disorder and therefore the treatment should be targeted towards enhancing or reducing those chemicals biologically. But these medicines are used for maintaining the balance. In that sense, with the present medicines, you will have to continue forever. I suggest online cognitive therapy. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user,
what is the severity of ocd? If you can manage without daxid for first 11-12 weeks, it will be better. If you think that your ocd will affect your child, it is better to continue along with folic acid 5 mg daily. Please do an u/s scan for abnormality at 11th week. All the best.

lybrate-user it is safe to take sertaline. It has long list of side effects, but those happen rarely. Most common side effect is abdominal discomfort, but that too subside with time. So if you are felling well no need to worry.
