Lixisenatide

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Lixisenatide

Lixisenatide is a recombinant DNA produced polypeptide analogue of human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) which is used in the therapy of type 2 diabetes, either alone or in combination with other antidiabetic agents.

It works by attaching to GLP-1 receptors on the surface of pancreatic cells which produce insulin. It then activates these receptors, which causes insulin to be released and helps to reduce blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

It also suppresses the release of glucagon, a hormone that increases glucose production by the liver and reduces the rate at which food reaches the intestine from the stomach and slows down the absorption of glucose. Common side effects of this drug include influenza, dizziness, hypoglycaemia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, back pain, etc.
