About Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine

The Food and Drug Administration has authorized Johnson and Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine for emergency use to prevent COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. As per the guidelines under emergency use authorization, the vaccine is recommended to be used in individuals of age 18 years and older.

Later on, FDA made some changes to the guidelines to add the information of a blood clot which is rare and serious, in vaccinated people, especially women of age less than 50 years.

Recommendations from WHO Strategic Advisory Groups of Experts have also allowed the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine to be used in the immunization against COVID-19.

The vaccine Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine should be administered as an intramuscular injection in the muscle of the upper arm. A single dosage of 0.5ml is recommended by the Strategic advisory Groups of Experts. For the administration of vaccines related to any other illness, a minimum time gap of 14 days needs to be taken after taking this vaccine.

As per the results based on clinical trials, the vaccine has 66.3% efficiency against the covid-19 viruses. It minimizes the chances of hospitalization and further death in the individuals who acquired the infection after a duration of 4 weeks from the day of vaccination. The vaccine also works efficiently and provides immunization in cases that are asymptomatic.

The benefits of getting vaccinated can be described in the following ways-

  • It is safe and has been approved on the basis of clinical trials.
  • It is effective against the risk of COVID-19.
  • Complete doses of vaccines enable a person to live a normal life full of different activities with the least chances of infection.
  • It helps in developing immunity.
  • It is the safest way to get protected against the disease.

There are some complications associated with the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine such as thrombosis and thrombocytopenia. Till now, 15 confirmed cases have been reported post-vaccination out of which the death count is three. Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia in this case involves different sites in the body such as cerebral venous sinuses, along with the veins present in the legs and blood vessels in the abdomen.

Other post-vaccine complications that have been reported are such as-

  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Transverse sinus thrombosis with thrombocytopenia
  • Seizures
  • Tinnitus

However, these complications are still under investigation and are not based on clinical trials. Some medical conditions act as predisposing factors in such cases.

The extent up to which the vaccine is safe can be determined by the results based on the clinical trials. The conclusions regarding the safety concerns stated some facts such as-

  • Side effects usually are mild to moderate, occurring within 7 days of vaccination.
  • The 18-59 years age group shows side effects more commonly than the age group of 60 years or more.
  • The rate of occurrence of the complication ’‘thrombosis with thrombocytopenia’’ is 7 per 1 million women between 18 to 49 years of age, who have been vaccinated.
  • The complication is rare for men as well as women more than 50 years of age.

Severe allergic reactions are rare that can develop within an hour after the administration of the vaccine. Some of them include difficulty in breathing, tachycardia, swelling of the face and throat, rashes all over the body, and dizziness.
