Festone Combi Kit

A medical termination pack or Festone Combi Kit consists of two medicines Mifepristone and Misoprostol that are used to medically terminate the pregnancy. The kit contains 5 tablets. One tablet of Mifepristone and four tablets of Misoprostol.

It is medically prescribed if you are within 63 days of gestation. Doctors do not opt for this process if you are over 10 weeks pregnant. Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid taken orally with water. It interferes with the Progesterone Secretion that terminates the Pregnancy.

Misoprostol is a Synthetic Prostaglandin that causes the cervix to soften, contract the Uterus and allows the emptying of the uterine contents. It is administered vaginally or orally depending on the patient’s condition.

Misoprostol may be self-administered or administered under a gynaecologist’s supervision so that the patient has access to the health facilities, if necessary. In case of an intrauterine pregnancy, termination by surgery is recommended.

The dosage is 1 tablet of Mifepristone, followed by 4 tablets of Misoprostol after 1-3 days. If abortion fails to occur after the administration of Misoprostol, the second dose of Misoprostol (2 tablets) is administered. In case of an intrauterine pregnancy, termination by surgery is recommended.

  The effect of this medicine lasts for an average duration of 7-10 days.

  Mifepristone starts producing the required effects within 1-2 hours of administration.

  It is advised that Mifepristone is used to terminate a pregnancy that is within 63-70 days. Use of this drug to control elevated blood sugar level should not be done if you are pregnant.

• Are there any missed dose instructions?

  For termination of pregnancy, it is a single dose therapy; it is not possible to miss a dose. If you are taking it for controlling blood sugar level and miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. But do not double dose.

  If you overdose on Mifepristone, contact your physician right away.

This kit blocks the effect of progesterone by competitively binding to the specific receptors and sensitizing the inner linings of the uterus inducing bleeding and contractions. It also blocks the effect of cortisol at the specific receptors and reducing the effect caused by an excess of this hormone.

Misoprostol taken intravaginally behaves as a prostaglandin E1 analogue and reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It further protects the stomach walls by increasing the production of bicarbonates and mucus. It can cause the smooth muscles of the uterus to contract and the cervix to relax.
