Hi my uncle is a alcoholic and we gave him Dizone for the last 2 weeks and now he does not want to drink he has quit ...
Dear Pam, I hope Dixone is Disulfiram tablet. Disulfiram and alcohol interaction gives unpleasant feeling and morbid fear. That is why your uncle is not drinking since he is not getting any good feeling with alcohol. If you stop Disulfiram, he will start enjoying alcohol and become dependent within few days by increasing the alcohol intake. So DO NOT STOP Disulfiram unless you want him to drink on an occasion. Disulfiram needs to be stopped 10 days earlier to make him enjoy alcohol.

Hello, No, Esperal contains Disulfiram. Alcohol disulfiram reaction had caused death even at dose as low as 30 ml of alcohol. Alcohol is not at all safe on disulfiram and should be avoided for at least 2 weeks after disulfiram use. Remember craving for alcohol is hardly for 30 minutes and if you can overcome that 30 minute by drinking water or diverting your mind in some other work you will be able to control craving. Take Care.

If you are having disulfiram and drinking after that, you will suffer from vomiting and tiredness. If you aren't drinking, you might need some other medications for the symptoms.

How long can a patient take disulfiram? So that he become fully alcohol dependent.

How long can a patient take disulfiram? So that he become fully alcohol dependent.
Its your will power that will make you alcohol independent. Unless you recognise that its the root cause of all sort of bad thing, it spoil personal life. Its a major cause of accidental death, family issues, even major rape cases the person in drunken, some time he even not spare his own family member. If disulfiram is to be used, the patient must clearly understand the risks of drinking while taking the drug, and the physician and patient must agree about the need for continued clinical supervision and monitoring for efficacy and side effects. The physician must also recognize that disulfiram is only an adjunctive therapy and that continued support, supervision, and other therapeutic measures are required. Disulfiram is probably effective in reducing the frequency of alcohol consumption in the compliant patient over the short term (e.g. 6 months). Certain subgroups of patients, such as those who are older, those who are more socially stable, and those who are well-motivated, may experience a beneficial effect for longer periods. The drug may be most effective in reducing short-term alcohol consumption when the compliance of the patient is supervised, although consideration of this kind of therapy includes the practical problems of supervising the patient and concerns that the supervising person may be placed in a difficult position. Its not magic wick. Ultimate its you who decide and there are ways to avoid it, please try speaking to me.

Dear lybrate-user, Many psychiatrists are trained in addiction medicines. It is better that you consult one of them. First 1-2 weeks, focus will be on assessment or body health, motivational level, admission to hospital and treatment of withdrawal symptoms. Then for next 9-12 months, he will be given anti-craving medicines and focus will be on prevention of lapses and relapses. For Disulfiram, you need to take him into confidence and take his consent. Alcohol disulfiram interaction can be severe that needs instant treatment. It causes aversion to alcohol and he will be scared to drink alcohol. This needs to be done under the continued guidance by psychiatrist. It will be good for him if his motivational level is high.

Dear Neeraj, It is nice that you get disulfiram reaction on you face itself. It is a good aversion for you not to drink alcohol. For that benefit only, disulfiram was given originally. Disulfiram has a long half life - that means, after stopping disulfiram, for it to leave your body it takes time. So it is possible for you to have its reaction, even without disulfiram. It takes more time to leave your body, if your liver has not improved after stopping alcohol. Disulfiram gets digested in liver to reach the blood and nerves. If your liver functions have improved, especially GGT less than 40, you can be more sure that disulfiram will get out of your body within a week or 10 days. If liver functions well, it will throw away the alcohol your drank within 1/2 hour also. It is always safe for you not to drink at all or stop when the reaction starts itself. If you continue drinking, it can even become fatal.
