This tablet causes inhibition of the enzymatic alteration of pteridine and p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) into dihydropteroic acid. It competes with PABA for combining with dihydrofolate synthetase. This is an intermediate of the tetrahydrofolic acid (THF) synthesis. After Trimethoprim combines to dihydrofolate reductase it brings about inhibition of dihydrofolic acid (DHF) reduction into tetrahydrofolic acid (THF). Tetrahydrofolic acid is an important predecessor to thymidine synthesis and hindrance with the synthesis of pathway brings about inhibition of bacterial DNA synthesis.
