At thisyoung age of 5 yrs, you understand you might be thinking of finding some ways to reduce hyperactivity. But then this must be causing him non attention. But somehow this is too young age to start medication. You are required to learn different ways to deal with his hyperactivity, by engaging him in physical eye hand and muscular coordination activities whereby he will not only enjoy but learn to orient his physical excess energy. Occupational therapy should also be applied.

It is important to gauge why he is feeling suicidal. Instead of simply medicating him, take him to a counsellor with whom he can share his worries & fears so that the right course of action can thereby be determined under the care & control of a responsible mental health professional.

If depression is diagnosed by specialist, then bupropion will definitely help although first preference is given to other ssris depending on patient profile. But atomoxetine is not used for depression as 1st or 2nd line unless adhd symptoms are there along with depression. So amtalk to your psychiatrist and clarify your diagnosis first and why atomoxetine is added.

Usually they wait till 6 years of age for the medications to be given. However in severe hyperactivity, some clinicans start them early. Giving OT is good, mostly the ADHD symptoms will resolve with time, you can make a choice of waiting till 5-6 years before starting on medication, if you can manage. All the best.

Hello lybrate-user
you have been started on concerta xl 18 mgs only recently. Your prescribing doctor will review response, monitor for any possible side effects and if appropriate will titrate up the dose gradually till there is effective control of your adhd symptoms. Most of them respond well to concerta (which is an extended release preparation of methylphenidate which is a stimulant medication). If for whatever reason concerta does not suit you, there is no harm in trying atomoxetine. M...more
