Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by any type of Candida (type of yeast). Depending on the area it affects, it is referred to by different names. When it affects the mouth it is called thrush; when it affects the vagina it is called yeast infection. Symptoms are: redness, itching, discomfort, blisters and pustules may also occur. Severe complications may be fatal if left untreated.
HOW IS CANDIDIASIS DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis of candidiasis is done by a dermatologist or a skin specialist. The doctor will perform a physical examination to inspect the location of the rash and the appearance of the skin. The doctor may recommend a skin culture and use a cotton ball to swab the affected area and collect a skin sample to send to the laboratory for checking the presence of Candida.
HOW IS CANDIDIASIS TREATED?
Home remedies are very effective in treating candidiasis. Proper hygiene and regular washing of skin helps in keeping infections away. Maintaining normal blood sugar levels is also effective in relieving symptoms of candidiasis. For severe infections, antifungal powders or creams may be used.
