Healthy sleep habits can make a big difference in your quality of life. Having healthy sleep habits is often referred to as having good sleep hygiene. Try to keep the following sleep practices on a consistent basis: Stick to a sleep schedule of the same bedtime and wake up time, even on the weekends. This helps to regulate your body's clock and could help you fall asleep and stay asleep for the night. Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual. A relaxing, routine activity right before bedtime conducted away from bright lights helps separate your sleep time from activities that can cause excitement, stress or anxiety which can make it more difficult to fall asleep, get sound and deep sleep or remain asleep. If you have trouble sleeping, avoid naps, especially in the afternoon. Power napping may help you get through the day, but if you find that you can't fall asleep at bedtime, eliminating even short catnaps may help. Exercise daily. Vigorous exercise is best, but even light exercise is better than no activity. Exercise at any time of day, but not at the expense of your sleep. Evaluate your room. Design your sleep environment to establish the conditions you need for sleep. Your bedroom should be cool – between 60 and 67 degrees. Your bedroom should also be free from any noise that can disturb your sleep. Finally, your bedroom should be free from any light. Check your room for noises or other distractions. This includes a bed partner's sleep disruptions such as snoring. Consider using blackout curtains, eye shades, ear plugs, "white noise" machines, humidifiers, fans and other devices. Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows. Make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive. The one you have been using for years may have exceeded its life expectancy – about 9 or 10 years for most good quality mattresses. Have comfortable pillows and make the room attractive and inviting for sleep but also free of allergens that might affect you and objects that might cause you to slip or fall if you have to get up.

Hei...
It is known that alcohol in excess is not good even for a normal person, although it is the most abused common drug. It may lower the blood glucose below certain critical normal limits and result I hypoglycemia. Alcohol should never be taken with some antidiabetic drugs as it may make the diabetic very ill. Diabetics on continuous consumption of alcohol are likely to develop peripheral neuopathy. Alcohol provides empty calories as it doesn't contain proteins or fat. The extra calories may make a diabetic overweight or obese. Further, alcohol stimulates the appetite and dietary regulations are generally not complied with. When a diabetic can not avoid alcohol, he may only take a small quantity just before or along with food, provided his diabetes is under control.

Hi controlling the diet and walks is the best way to stay off the medicines. Include fibre rich foods, complex carbohydrates, more vegetables and protein rich foods. Walking daily will help the body utilise insulin in a better way thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, To know whether there is diabetes present or not, you have to get following tests done. Fasting blood glucose, which is after taking dinner at night, nothing to taken for 8 hours and doing the test in the morning. Second is after breakfast, that is 2 hours after taking the breakfast. Plus also get a HbA1c%. These test will tell correctly whether there is diabetes or not. Thanks.

Your fasting glucose is slightly raised - its called as" pre-diabetes, but you dont need any medicines for nkw. Rest everything is ok. Dont worry. Start following a healthy diet, include salads & sprouts in your meal times, cut down on sweets, rice, oily & fried stuff and start exercising daily for 30 - 45 minutes. These lifestyle modifications will delay the chances (if any) of developing diabetes. Make sure you check your blood sugar levels every 6 months.

Tsh level of 10 to 20 milli units/l is to high shows that hypothyroidism is not in control at all. To achieve good control in hypothyroidism tsh should be between 3 to 4 milli units/l. At that level all the symptoms are well controlled. Menstrual period irregularity is very typical of uncontrolled hypothyroidism. Even for conception to occur, tsh levels have to be as low as 0.1 to 2 milli units/l and later during the pregnancy too levels have to be: 1st trimester 0.1 to 2 milli units/l, 2nd trimester 0.3 to 3 milli units and 3rd 0.3 3.3 milli units/l. This means dosage of thyroxine has to be adjusted appropriately. Thanks.

Whether peanut should be avoided in diabetic patients. If not how much one can eat in one day.

Whether peanut should be avoided in diabetic patients. If not how much one can eat in one day.
Peanut is good source of protein. You can eat roasted peanut, avoid deep fried or salted peanuts. You can consume about a little less than handful of peanuts/day. Eating too many peanuts will make you fat and increase your cholesterol level. Hope this has helped you. Thank you

Disulfiram tablet is taken for curbing the habit of excessive drinking. This tablet is not a solution to alcohol abuse and as such shouldn't be given for longer periods. Its task is to eliminate the habit of drinking in a conditioned individual by developing averse reactions in his body so that the body starts to avoid alcohol.

My TSH levels are significantly higher suggesting hyperthyroidism. Please suggest medication and also suggest if any exercise can also help.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. High TSH (actual value is not mentioned, which is important to know), means you have hypothyroidism. Treatment can only be decided on seeing the actual values of T3, T3 & TSH. Plus your height and weight. Because without all those details dose of the medication can not be decided. It is better if you come in a private conversation then I will be able to prescribe the medication. In this communication we are supposed to give only general guidelines, no prescriptions are allowed. Thanks.

Dilation & Curettage Process - What To Expect From It?

MBBS, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Patna
Dilation & Curettage Process - What To Expect From It?

Dilation and curettage procedure which is commonly referred to as D&C is a minor surgical procedure where the cervix is dilated while a special instrument is used for scraping out the lining of the uterus. It is important to know what you can expect before, after and during the process so that you can stay ahead of unnecessary worries and help the process to be smooth and fruitful.

When do doctors recommend dilation and curettage process?
You may be required to undergo the dilation and curettage procedure for one of many reasons. It can be used for removal of tissues in the uterus during or after an abortion or miscarriage or to remove little pieces of placenta after delivery. This process aids in preventing infection as well as heavy bleeding. On the other hand, it can help in diagnosing and treating abnormal uterine bleeding including polyps, fibroids, hormonal imbalances and even uterine cancer. A sample of the tissues in the uterus is tested under a microscope to check if there is any abnormal cell present.

What can you expect during the dilation and curettage process?
The D&C procedure is a minor one and takes about 15 minutes even though you will have to spend about 4 to 5 hours in the healthcare facility. Before the procedure, your doctor would check complete history, and at this point, you should tell your doctor if you suspect that you are pregnant, you are sensitive to latex or any medicines or if you have a history of bleeding disorders. You will then be given anesthesia so that you don’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Before this procedure, you will have to empty your bladder.

The D&C procedure comprises two main steps, dilation, and curettage.
Dilation involves opening of the lower part of the uterus or the cervix for allowing insertion of a slender rod. This is done to soften the cervix so that it opens and allows curettage to be performed. Curettage involves scraping of the lining and removal of the uterine contents with the help of a spoon-like instrument known as a curette. This may cause some amount of cramping, and a tissue sample would be taken out for examination in the laboratory.

After the completion of the procedure, you may experience slight bleeding and cramping. In some rare cases, adhesions or scar tissues may start forming inside the uterus, and this condition is termed as Asherman’s syndrome which can cause changes in the menstrual cycle along with infertility. This problem, if arises, can be solved with the help of surgery and therefore, you should report any abnormality in your menstrual cycle to your doctor. Consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Creatine ln blood 1.5 ml/dl is for diabetic female. Can this be cured with medication and diet?

Creatine ln blood 1.5 ml/dl is for diabetic female. Can this be cured with medication and diet?
lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Creatinine increase happens when kidney function is affected. This can happen in many conditions including diabetes. Only way to reduce that level is achieve a strict blood glucose control with FBG < 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8. 1.5 mg is just marginally high. With proper control of diabetes and dietary adjustment, it can be reversed. There is nothing like cure in this situation. Thanks.
