What Is IBS?

What Is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome:- ibs awareness month- april

Do you have the abcs of irritable bowel syndrome?

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Bloating
  • Cramping
  • Diarrhea

April is a ibs awareness month!

Ibs is a long time functional gastrointestinal disorder with symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, altered bowel habit like diarrhoea/constipation. It can effect any age. Patient feels better after passing stool. There may be mucous in stool but without blood. Common cause is infection & lactose intolerance Generally diagnosis is made by detailed history and examination.

Investigation:- stool examination and investigation required as per history

Treatment:- diet modification with avoidance of milk/ fatty meal, treatment of infection if suspected, sometimes patients require short course of ssri. So basically treatment depends on case to case basis, depending on clinical situation.
 Remember it can be cured!

**one important aspect of diagnosis of ibs is identifying alarming signs which are weight loss, blood in stool, reduced appetite & fever (if these features are present, most likely its not irritable bowel syndrome)

Respected sir, My father is around 60 years old. He is a serviceman. Yesterday night after dinner he suddenly started sweating, although it was rain and weather was cool.In dinner he took milk with rice, curry as usual. After dinner he felt little pain in stomach. We became very worried about sudden sweating. But sweating was not so profuse. So sir I want to know that what is the reason behind this sudden sweating? Please let me know. His blood pressure is almost normal. Around 120/85. He has no blood sugar. His weight is approx 58.

I understand your anxiety related to your fathers new symptom. It's really good that you have concerns for your parents and noticed an important symptom for your fathers age. You have written the sweating was not so profuse and probably settled soon, so most likely nothing to be worried. However this sweating was after taking meals, I suspect cardiac cause if there is anything. Get one ECG/ TMT done. Continue to give him care as you are already doing!

Are You Hypertensive?

Are You Hypertensive?

Are you hypertensive?
Now aha has given new guidelines for diagnosing hypertension. If your blood pressure is more than 130/80 mmhg, it suggests hypertension / elevated bp.
Diet modification and exercise is advised from beginning to the individual who has elevated blood pressure. Sometimes if one has high bp he may require medicine to control it. Sometimes just with diet and lifestyle modification it can be reduced.

Bp classification -
Normal <120 and <80
<!--120-->Elevated 120-129 and 80
<!--80-->Hypertension
Stage 1.130-139or 80-89
Stage2. 140 or & 90

For prevention of hypertension
1. Avoid smoking
2. High salt in diet
3. Exercise regularly
4. Weight reduction

Check your blood pressure and start lifestyle modification from the beginning!

I am suffering from cold and cough from last 5 days and whenever I cough hard I get chest pain what can I do.

DNB (General Medicine), MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

Coughing hard itself can cause chest pain! If you have all these symptoms don’t get worried. Just take anti allergic and steam. But if you have these symptoms are associated with fever or if these symptoms r for long time, you need to get evaluated. At least a X-ray can be done.

Few months ago I visited a doctor and had my blood tested, he said my iron levels were low and I was on tablets for about 3 months, its been about 6 months since the visit and I still feel fatigued a lot of the time and have palpations which are very annoying, I'm 18, I use to also drink a lot of tea but have stopped recently, does that have anything to do with my low iron levels.

Generally when you start taking iron tablets, serum iron gets corrected within 3 months. If the cause is not corrected then it may Natalie longer or even can not be corrected. See what is the cause of iron deficiency in your case? Taking lot of tea causes poor iron absorption but since you left that, there should be improvement!

I understand your problem! Weight reduction is sometimes very difficult due to resistant fat. So initial effort does matter. There are 3 rules of weight reduction-1. Consistency 2. Daily physical activity minimum 5 hrs a week 3. Reduce fat, salt and sugar from diet. The problem area, where patients generally do mistakes are 1. Inconsistency, 2. Dieting rigorous which results in being eating! Avoid that. Get your thyroid checked too Be consistent to reduce weight.

Costochondritis is actually inflammation and not infection. It’s basically inflammation of joint between bone and cartilage. Generally it goes on itself by 3-4 weeks but if you have a lot of problem, you can start Medicine to reduce inflammation. Thyroid does not have any relation with pain. If you have a lot of symptoms be sure that you have costochondritis only.

Since you are an health care provider your self. You also seem to have knowledge about your disease. If you are not getting relief for 4 years then you must meet a qualified doctor who have good experience. To me it looks like IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s diseases and not simple IBS that is irritable bowel syndrom. You need to take different medicine when you have ulcer in colon. please take proper consultation.

Selenium and zinc are directly involved with thyroid hormone levels and not antibodies level. Main treatment of Hashimoto is controlling TSH levels and not Ab levels.
