Platelet Antibody Direct, IgG Test

Platelet Antibody Direct, IgG Test

also known as: Platelet antibody screen Quest test code 5019X

Platelet-Antibody-Direct-IgG test looks for platelet antibodies in your blood in order to find the cause of a low platelet count. Platelets are mainly responsible for blood clotting and are made in the bone marrow along with white and red blood cells. If the platelet antibodies are discovered in your blood then it means that your immune system is mistakenly creating antibodies to attack the platelets in your blood. The platelet antibodies are found in the people suffering from idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpurp>a or systemic lupus erythematosus. The health care provider may diagnose thrombocytopenia if considerable amounts of your platelet have been destroyed.

Wear a half-sleeved shirt on as full-sleeved shirt might pose difficulty in pulling up the sleeves. Do not wear sweater or jacket. No specific requirement is required for this test. Fasting is not necessary and the patient may continue taking any medication that the patient is already taking. If your blood sample is needed for other tests then fasting may be required in some cases. Please kindly follow the instructions given by the lab.

The test is used to find out whether the platelet antibodies are there in the blood or not. The test results imply as given below: Negative (IgG & IgM): No excess platelet antibodies are found in the patient’s blood. An immune cause of thrombocytopenia is unlikely.

Positive (IgG and/or IgM): Platelet-associated immunoglobulin has increased in the blood. A case of the immune cause of thrombocytopenia should be considered. But many other conditions like IgM rheumatoid factor antibodies also result in an increase in platelet-associated antibodies.

Strong Positive (IgG and/or IgM): A definite increase in platelet-associated immunoglobulin is seen and an immune cause of thrombocytopenia should be considered. But many other conditions like IgM rheumatoid factor antibodies also result in an increase in platelet-associated antibodies.

About 1 ml or just 2 teaspoons of the blood sample will be drawn from your body. This test needs to be conducted in a well-equipped diagnostic lab with Lp-PLA2-PLAC test facility. The skin is cleaned with an alcohol pad. In the next step, the needle will be inserted into the body through the vein which is easily visible over the cleaned skin. The blood sample will be collected through the tube attached to the needle. The tube is separated from the needle and closed with a lid and with the patient’s name on it. The blood sample is finally sent to the research laboratory for testing.
