Chyluria (Urine) Test

Chyluria (Urine) Test

Chyluria test is performed on a sample of urine to measure the level of Fat Content in urine. Chyluria or chylous urine means the presence of chyle in the urine, which results in milky urine. The nematode Wuchereria bancrofti is behind the menace. The lymph laden with fat that has been absorbed from the intestine is responsible for the milky appearance. Chyle consists of the lymph and lipid particles called chylomicrons, which are composed of fats and proteins. If chyluria is left untreated, it can lead to malnutrition and fat-soluble vitamin deficiency. Chyluria can also affect pregnancy or childbirth.

No special preparation is needed for urine Chyluria test. Update the treating doctor of your medical condition, infections in the past or recent ones. If you are on taking some medicines or are allergic to anything tell him before undergoing Chyluria test. Depending upon your condition doctor might suggest set of special instructions. It is advisable to ask your doctor before you stop taking any medications.

It is concluded from the test report that If urine gets dissolved in ether, the white color of urine goes away and turns straw or pale yellow color by confirming the presence of Chyluria. But if there is no change in color and if urine did not dissolve with ether then Chyluria is not present in urine. By further checking under the microscope the presence of chyle can be confirmed if there is the presence of fat droplets in the urine. The Chyluria Urine test marks presence of Sexually transmitted diseases, Nephrotic syndrome, and Urinary tract infections.

Take urine and ether (fat solvent) in a separate container in equal amounts. Mix both the content (ether and urine sample) equally. Shake the mixture well and you will see the mixture splits into two different layers of ether and urine. The results are analyzed based on the change in color of urine. To further confirm the presence of chyle in urine we can take a slide and pour one drop of the above mixture on the slide and check them under the microscope.
