3T MRI Scan - Venogram Test

3T MRI Scan - Venogram Test

3T MRI, short for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a radiation-free scanning technique that uses radio waves and magnetic fields to produce detailed three-dimensional images of the body. The MRI venography is an imaging test that is used to visualize veins in the body. It is used to assess blood flow in the veins and can detect blood clots or other abnormalities. By imaging blood flow, the images helps your doctor to detect, diagnose and treat blood vessel disorders and diseases such as stroke, aneurysms, clots, obstructions, and vascular disease.

MRI is a non-invasive and a very safe test. Hence, no special preparation is needed. As MRI works with a strong magnet and radio waves, you must inform the technician in case you have any metal implants, heart stents or insulin pump in your body as their presence inhibits proper images. You need to inform the technician about any medications that you are taking at that time. Unless you are told otherwise, you can take all of your medications and follow your regular diet. Also, it is advised that you do not wear any hair clips, hair pins or clothes with chains or any other metal object.

As mentioned above, this test is used to assess the status of a vein or system of veins. It is used find blood clots within the veins and thereby guides treatment of diseased veins. The images obtained from the test are very clear and helps your doctor to detect, diagnose and devise a treatment plan for various blood vessel disorders involving the veins.

The technician will position you on a special table, which will slide the area of interest into the scanner. While the machine is taking your pictures, you will hear rapidly repeating, loud thumping noises coming from the walls of the scanner. For your comfort, earplugs will be provided. Using an intercom, you will be able to communicate with the technologist during the entire scan. You will also receive a squeeze ball that you can use to alert the technologist if a problem arises. The test will take around 30 to 60 minutes.
