My husband diagnosed with T. B and accelerated B. P. One year ago. Now his report is OK. But he started to take alcohol daily. After taking alcohol his face become red. Advise me.

Dear Anju, Alcohol acts on blood vessels. So face becoming red is okay. But motivate him to stop taking alcohol. Tell him to take help if he can not try by himself. There are good drugs for withdrawal symptoms and also for reducing the craving for alcohol.

Hello I find it difficult to breathe especially when the weather is cold and I feel pains in my lungs that I can hear myself breathing. Please tell.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Since the body area that needs utmost attention is the chest, one should try to keep it warm. Use fomentation bottle to warm up the chest, upper back, and back side of the neck. Keeping your feet in warm water is also helpful. It has been found by the researchers that drinking 3 glasses of orange juice everyday can bring down wheezing to 70%. Steam helps relieve the symptoms of all the respiratory tract ailments. Throw a towel on your head to inhale steam from a mini sauna, for 10 minutes. Steam will humidify your respiratory passages, easing your breathing, that will help in looking after the wheezing.

It is possible that you have what is known a allergic Rhinitis. It is not a serious illness but at the most an inconvenience. It is going to stay with you and it's better to accept and adapt than try some weird remedies. Surgery is out of question. Ask your doctor if a nasal spray of local steroid and an anti-allergy medication will help you and get a prescription from him.

What is a basic symptoms of flu? And tell me about the cough problems and fever and cough?
FLU (also known as the INFLUENZA) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:---------------------------- •Fever or feeling feverish/chills----- •Cough--------- •Sore throat-------- •Runny or stuffy nose-------- •Muscle or body aches---------- •Headaches---------- •Fatigue (tiredness)------------------ •Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.-------------- Preventive Homoeopathic medicine------------------------- INFLUENZINUM 200 (Dr Reckeweg) Drink 2 drops direct on tongue weekly and time during the day preferably at night before sleep-----------------------Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs-----------------------

ECMO New Era of Medicicne

Homeopath,
ECMO New Era of Medicicne

What is ECMO?
Like dialysis for unfunctional kidney, Ecmo for unfunctional lung.

Ecmo stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. It is a method of giving oxygen for the body when icu pateint lungs and/or heart are not able to supply oxygen on their own.

Why ICU pateint put on ECMO?

Doctors place ICU patients on ECMO when patients are not able to supply oxygen to the body.

ICU patients’ lungs fail for a number of reasons including pneumonia, lung cancer, pulmonary edema, pulmonary embolism and COPD.

When a patient’s lungs fail, he/she first is intubated (breathing tube) and hooked up to a ventilator (breathing machine).
However, sometimes lungs are so damaged that providing oxygen through intubation is not enough.

This is when doctors turn to v-v ecmo.
A heart can fail for many reasons including heart attack, pulmonary embolism, bad valve disease, or worsening heart failure. When a heart fails, doctors try to fix the underlying problem. They may also start medications (called ionotropes) to help improve the pump function of the heart. If medications are not enough, doctors will turn to v-a ecmo.

How long can someone stay on ecmo?

That is a complicated question. Due to the risks of ecmo discussed above, doctors try to keep patients on ecmo for as short a time as possible. Often patient will be on ecmo for several days up to 1-2 weeks. Every day, several blood and imaging tests are done to determine if a patient is ready to come off ecmo. As the technology of ecmo improves, hopefully side effects will decrease and patients can remain on ecmo for longer periods of time.

What is the difference between ecmo and a ventilator (breathing machine)?

Both ecmo and a ventilator aim to provide oxygen to the body when the patient’s own lungs and breathing are failing. The ventilator assists the patient’s own lungs by pushing oxygen with pressure into the lungs. Ecmo instead provides oxygen directly via a catheter placed in a patient’s vein or artery. We almost always try oxygenating a patient with a ventilator first. However, when a patient’s lungs are too sick for this, we turn to ecmo to assist in providing oxygen to the body. V-v ecmo provides oxygen through a vein. This blood then has to travel to the heart and be pumped around the rest of the body through arteries. Therefore, with v-v ecmo or with a ventilator, a patient must have a well-functioning heart to get the oxygen pumped throughout the body. V-a ecmo has the additional advantage of pumping blood directly to arteries. This “by-passes” the heart and is therefore the method of ecmo we use when a patient’s heart is failing.

Hi doctor. My wife is now 23 weeks pregnant. We are concerned about the nature of fetal anomaly in chest and what should be next course of action. On 13/08/15, At 21 weeks anomaly scan USG report says that Right lung appear to be broad in size and left lung seems to be small in size. A well defined septated cystic area measuring about 21*16.9 mm in size is seen in the base of the left lung in front of the heart and spine. It is aborting and slightly pushed the heart. The left lobe of the diaphragm seems to be raised. Suggestive of cystic adenomatoid malformation of lung. D/D- Diaphragmatic hernia/Eventration. On 22/08/15 (after 9 days) we did another ultrasound at another hospital which reports that Right lung is larger in size than left lung. At the base of the left lung, there is a cystic structure which pushes the lung in front of the heart. The left lobe of the diaphragm seems to be raised-possibly due to Diaphragmatic hernia. On 25/08/15 (after 3 days) the 3rd ultrasound anomaly scan report at other hospital says that the diaphragm of the left side is seen in moderately high up position and appears thin. Part of the stomach is seen along the left sided of the chest. The above condition of the left sided diaphragm is suggestive of (?) EVENTRATION or (?) HERNIA.(no pleural effusion/ascites). All the 3 above reports say that Fetal growth, weight, movement, cardiac activity, AFI are normal. No other major anomaly. Please advise me.
