MBBS, MD
Pediatrician, Gurgaon
You can first form a routine of eating with other members. This happens mortally with pampering our children. Then increase the quantity of food gradually. You can try cypon syrup one spoon twice a day. It have sedative property so start the drug in evening or on holidays. No driving.

Doctor my son 6 months old kindly advise me what are the foods I provide to him.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician,
Frequency: after 6 months you need to start weaning foods apart from breastfeeding. For next one month: 1-2 times other foods (rest breast or formula feeding) from 7th month: 2-3 times other foods, increase to 4 from 8th month and 5 from 9th month. After that 6 times food, plus breastfeeding. As you can see you shouldnot stop breastfeeding, taper it down slowly. After one year day time food plus night breastfeeding. Type 1. You can start weaning foods like rice gruel or kheer or boiled apple and boiled vegetables or cerelac, etc. Initially for one month give only once or twice a day. Rest should be breastfeeding and formula. 3. Exact quantity varies from baby to baby. Don't force feed every time. The moment he refuses to feed wait and try again after an hour or so. 4. Feed in calm and dark place to avoid distractions. 5. After 7 months gradually add home available foods (low salt low spice) like idli, kitchdi, dhal rice, etc in soft form (mashed with hands) 6. Add oil or ghee to each food item. 7. Avoid cows milk till 1 year. Consistency almost liquid like till 7 months, semisolids from 8 months soft solids from 10 months egg yellow from 8 months, white from 1 year fruits and vegetables all types in plenty (atleast two servings each per day) all vegetables can be boiled and given. Apple can be boiled while other fruits like banana papaya orange etc can be given without boiling. Regards.

Your son was 1.75 kg at birth, so you can expect him to be thrice his birth wt at 1years of age. Which he is. Low birth weight babies will catch up as they grow, like other kids. Give him time and he will be fine.

Can a Root Canal Actually Be Painless? Shocking Facts Revealed

Can a Root Canal Actually Be Painless? Shocking Facts Revealed

How scared are you of root canals? what if we tell you. You no longer need to be?
Root canals are easily one of the most dreaded treatments in the world. I have seen patients compare the anxiety they feel before a root canal to things like open heart surgery and labour. The last thing you want to hear on a dental chair is the diagnosis that you need a root canal. The horror stories surrounding this dental treatment range from gruesome to excruciating.

This article is an attempt to dispel the mystery and pain associated with root canals and show you how far we have come from the horrors to the sophistication of the latest technology.

From painful to pleasing

What are root canals really?
In its simplest sense a root canal is a deep filling done by cleaning the infection from the third and innermost layer of the tooth which is made up of nerves and blood vessels.

Our tooth is made up of 3 layers the first 2 are hard and confined layers called enamel and dentin when decay affects these it is very slow to spread and easy to remove and fill within one short session.

The third layer may take 1-3 sessions to clean as the infection may have spread or collected in the supporting tooth structures.

Why are root canals considered painful?

The 3rd layer of our tooth is a nerve chamber containing soft nerves and blood vessels in communication with the rest of our body.

This is the place that communicates pain to our brain and this is why when decay or bacteria hit this soft deeper layer we experience sharp shooting pain.

Top 3 reasons why root canals used to be painful

Improper or inadequate anesthesia to numb the inflamed nerve
Mechanical instrumentation to manually pull out the nerve which we now dissolve and clean with automated machines
Lack of the right medications to use within the tooth.

What happens to root canal infections if left untreated?
If this pain is suppressed with medication and not treated it can lead to an infection spreading within the bone which may later lead to a swelling with pus etc.

If this infection is left within it can eat into the supporting bone and eventually infect or affect the adjacent teeth as well.

I have delivered a baby in feb now my baby is 3 months but I have less breast milk so wht to do?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Lucknow
How do you know your milk is less? there is only one way to find if the milk is sufficient or not. If the baby passes urine more than six times in 24 hours then consider your milk as sufficient. Normally mother's milk is sufficient upto six months of age.

I am 39 years old Indian, vegetarian man. My son (Born Aug. 2010), for last 2 years, has stopped eating proper meals, only drinks bottled milk (100 ml) 4-5 times a day, or want to eat snacks like chips, biscuits, namkeen, but that too very little quantity. Due to this he remains constipated (pass bowel in 3-4 days) and irritated. This is a vicious kind of cycle where he remains constipated as he not takes proper food in good quantity and on the other hand - don't want to eat because of constant bowel pressure. He doesn't take any Allopathic medicine or tonic. His height is approx 3 ft. and weight 15 Kg. He is otherwise very active child.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatrician, Delhi
Looks like your five year old has never been weaned properly from milk to regular home food T the right time. He is now a big boy and you must set some basic ground rules for feeding. You'll have to stop snacks, set times for 3 major meals and not give more than 500 ml of milk per day. Making meals interesting, offering variations and involving child in food discussion and preparation as a play activity will help to change your faulty feeding patterns.

Dear Mr. Lybrate-user, I would say that I am not much concern about the loose stool and vomitings (milk) much. But having said that the baby is 6 months old, I would rather ask you to start weaning him. Some other food should also be started apart from milk.

Diarrhea - How to Treat it in Children?

M.Ch - Paediatric Surgery, MNAMS (Membership of the National Academy) (General Surgery) , DNB (General Surgery), MBBS
Pediatrician, Pune
Diarrhea - How to Treat it in Children?

Diarrhea occurs when the body is expelling germs out of it. An episode of diarrhea can last anywhere from a couple of days to a week. Dehydration, cramps, vomiting, nausea and fever often accompany diarrhea. Usually, children tend to get diarrhoea more than adults.

Diarrhea treatment according to causes behind it

  1. Treating diarrhea due to infection: Some common causes of diarrhea include infection from rotavirus, salmonella (a type of bacteria) and rarely giardia (a type of parasite). In children, virus is a common cause of diarrhea. Besides watery or loose stools, viral gastroenteritis infection symptoms include fever, headache, stomach ache and vomiting. Gastroenteritis diarrhoea can last for 5-14 days. During this time, fluid loss must be prevented. In younger children, oral rehydration solution (ORS) or breast milk is enough. Just feeding them water won’t replenish the potassium, sodium and other nutrients they lose. Older children, to prevent fluid loss, can be given ORS and popsicles to counter dehydration and vomiting.
  2. Treating diarrhea due to medications: Antibiotics or laxatives can cause diarrhea in children. If the diarrhea is mild, make sure your child is hydrated. If the antibiotics are causing diarrhoea, you need to continue medication, but do consult your doctor immediately.
  3. Treating diarrhea due to food poisoning: When it comes to food poisoning induced diarrhea, the same method as countering infection-induced diarrhea should be followed. Keep your child hydrated and call your doctor.

Diarrhea and children - recognising dehydration

The most serious complication of diarrhea is dehydration, especially if the diarrhea is severe. Severe dehydration is critical as it can cause brain damage, seizure, even death. Your child may need immediate medical attention, if you notice the following symptoms:

  1. Light-headedness and dizziness
  2. Sticky, dark mouth
  3. Dark yellow urine
  4. No or few tears when crying
  5. Dry, cool skin
  6. Loss of energy

When should you visit a doctor

Diarrhea resolves within a few days, but it can have serious complications. Call your doctor if you notice signs such as:
1. Looks very sick
2. Diarrhea has persisted for more than 3 days
3. Your child is less than 6 months old
4. Your child is vomiting bloody yellow or green fluid
5. Seems dehydrated
6. The fever reads above 105 degree Fahrenheit
7. Bloody stools
8. Rashes
9. Stomach pain persists for more than 2 hours
10. Infrequent urination

I am 22 year male recently analysed off having dyslexia and adhd which is affecting my studies and when inquired about how to help myself got a reply that an adult of this age cannot be helped what can I do about this.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
It is difficult to treat adhd at any time in life, period. So, considering advanced ages, it makes it tougher because the behaviors are all set in and reinforced. However, do not lose hope: there is nothing that is impossible in life except that we have not yet discovered the solution. Every effort is worth it and you should never be in want for not having tried. I also believe that something done is better than nothing done, even if it is wrong: passivity is criminal. You need to combine medication and therapy for something effective to emerge for you. There are three areas of focus in therapy that needs serious work: concentration, hyperactivity, and impulse control. You will need to put yourself on a strict time-structure with planned activities which have reasonable and reachable goals. These must be monitored and assessed regularly to give you an idea of progress. There are concentration exercises in yoga, and the ear and eye exercise, that will benefit you a lot. Meditation will be tremendously useful to moderate your responses and to develop focus and good self-control. Emotional therapy will play a significant role to alleviate the impulsive behavior to a large extent. If all this is done in a social context i. E. In groups or by mixing with other people, you will gain tremendously. You need to be cooperative at all times. Your diet could do with less carbohydrates and a good bit of fiber. It is best to avoid high-energy foods. Vigorous exercise of at least 30 minutes a day will expunge the high energy levels. The treatment is long term and arduous but it is worth putting in this effort for a reasonable outcome. Regarding the dyslexia there are reading exercises by using index cards that will help you with those words that you particularly read wrong. Some teachers who specialize in treating this disorder have equipment and methods that employ the four avenues of word-learning: visual, audio, kinesthetic and tactile. They employ and associate letter and word sounds i. E. From the phonics with the phonemes.

Weight is quite adequate for the age. We don't recommend children to have more weight as overweight may lead to problems like diabetes, high bp at an early age.

She is apparently alright. Weight is not the criteria for health. Obesity in children is grave health hazard. If she is active, she is healthy. You need regular advice on child rearing. And you may do a test for her, ask me privately.
