At your age I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to concentrate. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemicals: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night?s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with.

Sir, my mom is having diabetes type 2 she is in great depression because of that can you help me to solve her problem.
Dear lybrate-user, nice to see such an young boy trying to get help for mom. Diabetes and depression can co occur. Both need treatment. Most of the time your diabetes doctor can manage the depression also by counselling and if necessary with antidepressant tablets. Only when your mom is suicidal or not responding to usual dose and treatment, he/she will refer to psychiatrist. Please request her to discuss with the doctor freely about her depression. Alternately you can go in during her consultation and tell the doctor about her depression.

My hubby keeps tobacco in his mouth. He is not at all able to stop it. So I am worried. Can any 1 please help me to make him stop it. I am fed up of explaining it's side effects. But he is that much addicted to it. He used nicotex and again stopped it and started tobacco again.

Never give up on him. After many attempts he is bound to succeed. I understand your frustration but be patient because as soon as you give up, he will too. Sometimes, it will be your motivation that will goad him on. But be very careful that you don? t nag him. You are what is called a? co-dependent, that is you have become dependent on him dependent on tobacco. You can at the most just remind him, get help for him and then leave it up to him. Ideally, if the motivation comes from him, it is the best. Sometimes, he will need to suffer some complications that will act as a? nail in the coffin? before he is ready to go for help. In addiction parlance, it is called? hitting rock bottom. In the meantime, he should be taken to an addiction counselor and start the process of cleaning up his act. Hypnosis will also help. Whenever he stops, immediately supplement his oral need with some substitute like candies, nicotine gums, juices, soups etc. Also have him visit a dentist and thoroughly clean up his mouth so that he feels bad about staining them again.

If she does not love you, then there is no use wasting time and energy on her. A relationship has to be two way. You have to consider a someone who did not exist and move on. The fact is that you need to love someone who appreciates you and wants to love you back in return. Since this girl does not love you, there is no point pining for her. This does not make her a bad girl: she just does not fancy you or whatever. You cannot force her to love you. So just carry on with life. You can talk about your feelings to someone but do not talk ill of her. Over a period of time you will get over her and may even kick yourself for having lost yourself in such a girl because there will be many lovely girls you will meet in life and they will all be different. In that midst you will find your true love.

Hello mam, please suggest foods and eating behaviour which helps in curing depression.
Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. Clinical depression or depressive disorder is a neurochemical disorder. Clinical depression is usually treated with a combination of psychiatric medicines, psychotherapy, life style changes, meditation and exercise. I hope you are undergoing psychiatric treatment, otherwise, please approach a psychiatrist. Once you make the necessary amendments in your life with the help of the above said therapies and life style changes, learn how to manage the depressive episodes without medicines and learn to relax, the medicines can be weaned off over a period of one year. The best option for you is to undergo counseling and depression related therapy. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user your mom appears quite sensitive & a family person. Your brother going to chennai for better job prospects has to be emphasized, and I am sure she must be happy for him to be progressing in life--which definitely is something to feel good about. If expailened properly I am sure she wd understand. Her breathing & other problems are manifestations of anxiety. Explain her & insist upon leading an healthy life-style i.e; regular early morning routine, some walk or yoga on a regular basis, taking balanced diet, socialise, evening walk or going to public places with positive vibrations, talk about happy moments of the past & what all positives lie in store for future. Hope this helps! wishing you all the best!

Dear lybrate-user. The question contains the answer. To be happy, stop thinking about others. That means, in negative circumstances compare yourself with more negative incidents people suffer and in positive situations compare positives. Take care.

You are in deviation. Watching ponrographs only increase your disire and there is a danger of becoming obsessed with that habit leading to many other problems like loss of concentration, feeling of guilt, and even to depression. So that is not a good idea. Prostitution is very bad idea through which you will loose your future in all dimensios, since you are only 19. It is quite normal to have sexual thoughts and feelings at your age. Mind it, it is a trap which dicides whether your future is bright or dark. I mean, you are provided with tremendous physical and mental energy at this age by mother nature. If you direct this energy towards your career achievement and goals, you will get whatever you like, say name, fame, beautiful wife, power, money etc. Otherwise if you are wasting your energies in such a way you have mentioned, it is sure you loose both the present and future. Masturbation, strictly once in a week, will give you some relief without affecting your health.

Hi lybrate-user, Low self-esteem is seeing yourself as inadequate, unacceptable, unworthy, unlovable, and/or incompetent. These beliefs create negative, self-critical thoughts that affect your behaviour and your life choices, often lowering your self-esteem even further. Using the tools of mindfulness, you can learn to look at situations, other people and yourself objectively, without the negative influence of the past and with the awareness that you always have a choice. Live in the moment When you are focused on the moment, you can choose your actions consciously and wisely, unaffected by the hurts of your past and unconcerned by worries or hopes about the future. Develop awareness When we’re aware, we can recognise how we are responding and reacting to our own fears, creating a moment between our emotions and our actions. We can then choose to respond in a healthier way. Write in a journal Many of our thoughts and feelings are locked in our subconscious mind and writing can help to bring them into our awareness. Writing about the way we feel and think can help to separate negative ideas about ourselves from the truth of who we really are. Be non-judgemental When we approach our lives non-judgementally, we simply accept ourselves, our experiences, our failures and successes and other people just as they are, neither good or bad, without pride or shame. Stay connected to yourself Mindfulness can help you to develop a sense of connection to yourself and reduce your people-pleasing ways by allowing you to stop the autopilot thinking and behaviour that keeps you jumping to please others without thinking of your own needs. Practice mindful meditation Meditation just means letting go of the racing thoughts in your mind and accepting that those thoughts, feelings and beliefs are transient, rather than parts of yourself. Take a few moments every day to simply be still, focus on your breathing and watch your worries drift away like clouds. Participate in your own life Mindfulness encourages us to become active and assertive in creating our own lives. Awareness of your thoughts and choosing your responses to them enables you to take action and participate in your own life. Develop a beginner’s mind When you have a beginner’s mind, you look at things as if you are seeing them for the first time, with openness, eagerness and freedom from expectation. You can see things in a new light, rather than automatically responding with the same old patterns of behaviour. Let go Non-attachment, or letting go, is the goal of mindfulness. When you let go of what you think you should do or who you should be, you can trust yourself and choose what’s right for you. Show compassion toward yourself You deserve love as much as anyone else. Self-compassion simply means providing yourself with the love, safety and acceptance you need. Regards,

I am always thinking and disturbing myself, it won't stop thinking. what should I do? Should I meditate!
Yes, this may be true because of your age. I suspect that you are going through a spurt in the production of the male sex hormone, which affects you in three ways quite unknown to you. First, there will be a sexual agenda that it will kick off, secondly, there will be aggressiveness and rebelliousness, and thirdly, you will suffer from acne and pimple problems. This is the effect of the hormone that has a duration of almost two years and you will have no control over it. But if you have a good value system you will tide over this phase without significant damage. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring along some distractions that come with it. Since you are in a transition stage from adolescence to adulthood, a lot of physical, hormonal, emotional, and social changes will take place. The mental changes are perhaps the most challenging: there is bound to be confusion, indecision, mental turmoil, strife, stress and conflict. Do not be too alarmed by these unless they are getting quite out of hand. If so, you must meet with a counselor and share all your thoughts and feelings. That person will help you tide over them and will be able to discern if there are any concerns in your thoughts. You will probably need some therapy on emotions to help you stabilize in that area. This will definitely help you tremendously. You must relate to the therapist as a confidante until you grow out of the influences of the adolescent phase. Sometimes childhood issues that have not been resolved will also come up for the last time seeking a resolution. If that is the case, this is a good time to identify them and sort it out for good. It won?t be easy because the hormones are also acting up and it might frustrate you no end. But stay firm with the therapy until it is resolved.

My grandson is 20 month as of now he is not speaking nor responding doctors are predicting Autism can you suggest what to do.

M.Sc Applied Psychology, Advanced Diploma Child Guidance & Counselling
Psychologist, Delhi
Dear Lybrate user Please give proper stimulation and time to the child to grow and develop. It's too early to label a child as having autism. First get your grandson hearing test done, because if hearing is not appropriate then it could lead to language delay. Another thing is you can try giving him language exposure like labelling the door as door with the words marked over it. Recite rhymes to him, tell him bed time stories to him. Have patience, all the best.
